(Like I said, any mundane items you want are yours for the taking. I think a breastplate is the best mundane armor you can get without hurting your stealth)

(OOC: Since Simon has 20 DEX, medium doesn't really help you, does it? Breastplate is AC 14 + DEX (max of +2), so it tops out at AC 16. Simon's best bet would be to pick up a shield, which won't impact Stealth and which he should still be able to use in combat with any one-handed weapon or his Psychic Blades. As long as he wasn't planning on two-weapon fighting, that gets Simon to AC 19.)
I picked up studded leather but wandering if I needed a free hand for my gun and my psychic blade
Getting sturdier armor would actually drop your AC unless you pick up Medium Armor Master, in which case you could both wear half-plate AND not have disadvantage on your Stealth checks.

(I have a +5 to my Dex so it gives me an AC of 17, and if I pick up a shield I would get 19. But At this level none of that matters since most things have a base it of 18+)
So, what does the party do next? Are you going straight to the Gray Palace, or would you rather make your entrance in the local town for reconnaissance without getting too close to the last known location of the Countess just yet?
Erik's understanding of "the plan" is that we'll go first to the town where the Gray Palace is located. We'd like to arrive a few days before the party. The idea was to do spend a couple of days doing reconnaissance of both the building and of the people before the night of the party. We need to find out what's going on so that we can be better prepared. We need to know whether The Countess is interacting openly with the political elite or whether she's operating entirely from the shadows and just having enchanted minions carry out her orders.
We would not go directly to the Gray Palace. We'd like to arrive in town quietly so that we don't draw any special attention from The Countess or anyone she has already convinced to work with her. Of course, that's a little harder for Erik unless he eschews his armor while going about the town. If the general could authorize it, we could set up our base of operations at a military base in or just outside of town. If there's nothing like that nearby, then we'll have to ask them to take a set of rooms for us in a hotel or to rent house for the week. (DnDBnB? 😉)
Being a rather posh area, the town doesn't have an active military presence.
You arrive with little fanfare and a voucher to stay at one of the local inns, the Jealous Goose Inn. As you're signing inn, a half-elf woman bursts through the doors, a bit out of breath.
"Sorry I'm late," she says sheepishly as she hands over her card. "I just got the word from General Kennard that I've been assigned to your squad. The name is Chandrelle, and I'm the battle medic that you requested. Nice to meet you."
(OOC: In case anyone gets the wrong idea based on her race/species or the fact that I'm using red text for her like I did for the Hunter, Erik would recognize the Countess, and this woman clearly isn't her. I've decided I'm just going to use red text for NPC dialogue to make it stand out more in my posts)

Completely out of his element, Toa shambles around the inn like a caged bear. Wondering why a goose would be jealous, as the sign hanging outside had suggested. His echo stalks behind him silently, his face more patient than the barbarian's real visage.
He grins toothily at Chandrelle as the half-elven medic bursts in. "Tangaroa's tides favor you, lass. May the ancestors protect us so you never have to stitch us back up. Though you probably will, going by what we saw last time. If there's anything to stitch back up after it's over, anyway."
"But I guess we're maybe talking first?" Toa looks resigned as he turns back to his companions. "I scent a whiff of, ah... poli-tics in the air."
The island warrior likely does not know what the word 'politics' means, at least not in this context, only that it's somehow important right now.
Erik greets Chandrelle and introduces himself and the others. He asks, "Have you been briefed on...", he glances around the public space, "...the threat?" He wants to make ensure that she knows about the legendary foe that they may be fighting before they're face-to-face with The Countess.
Assuming that Chandrelle is already up-to-speed, I guess the first order of business is find our room or rooms, hopefully all right next to or across from each other. Do we have separate rooms or shared rooms?
Then maybe gather for a moment and decide what to do next. Erik says, "Should we go out and stroll around and see the sights? Maybe see whether we can find some of the famous palaces in town?"
Eppie drops her heavy suitcase down on the floor in the hotel lobby, frowning at the reluctant bellhop. "Look, I'm a third your height, if I can carry it..."
The goblin perks up her ears as the half-elf medic rushes in, introducing herself. "Eh?" she says, distractedly. "Good to meet you, Chandrelle, I'm Eppie Thyxius. Don't worry, I've got some tricks up my sleeve too, keeping all these mooks on their feet. Be nice, Pyx." The feathered lizard-bird has begun nibbling on Chandrell's bootlaces.
The goblin fiddles with her shield for a minute, and then, very ostentatiously, with her revolver. "I oiled up all the circuitry before we left," she says to Erik. "I don't have my equipment with me to fix anything, but they should hold out." She stuffs the revolver back in its holster, and grins with her mouth full of sharp teeth. "Let's go see the sights," she says. "Might as well expand our horizons and educate ourselves on the local culture, eh?"
"Take that to my room!" she hollers at the bellhop as the group heads out. "Or I'll have Pyx leave your 'tip'!"
Chandrelle smiles, though the way her ear twitches betrays a bit of nervousness.
"Yes, I got a pretty thorough briefing on what's up," she says. "It sounds pretty bad... but at least it won't be boring. Anyway, I hope my services won't be needed too much, but I'm sure we can all agree that it's better to have me and not need me than the other way around, right?"
Simon: you would probably need to contact someone inside the Gray Palace to get a guest list, though you might be able to make an informed guess if you can get a hold of the guestbooks of the local hotels. After all, the guests at the Gray Palace will need to stay somewhere.

(OOC: Are there newspapers in this world? A local publication might have some information about the upcoming event if it's big enough to draw attendees from out-of-town who aren't simply house guests at the Gray Palace.)

(Possible, though it would only list the most prominent of the guests rather than get you a full list like Simon was talking about).

Now we're in another town at the Jealous Goose Inn. I assume that we had at least one Long Rest. Is it just the next day? Or have multiple days passed since we captured The Hunter?)

To give you a bit more direction, here's my suggestion for your next move: find ways to enter the Gray Palace. 'The military' isn't on the guest list, and you're going to want to find a way to get in without attracting too much attention.

With Simon's watchful eye trait from his early days as a city guard, can he find a criminal den that might specialize in building schematics? He would love to get a layout of the gray palace. He would also be willing to look for that information in the library.

"Oh I'm thinking we'll need you soon enough, doc," Toa drawls. "Just hoping you don't need you."
The island barbarian is not strong on self-awareness, but he knows enough to realize he is going to stand out as being obviously out of place in a town such as this. So he sticks to the Jealous Goose and paces restlessly, trying to keep a low profile while the big brains figure out the next step.
(Could Simon pick up the best medium armor that won't effect his stealth.)
