Once every eight years, the fantastic Witchlight Carnival touches down on your world, bringing joy to one settlement after the next. Its owners, Mister Witch and Mister Light, know how to put on a good show. But there’s more to this magical extravaganza than meets the eye!
The carnival is a gateway to a fantastic Feywild domain unlike anything found on the Material Plane. Time has not been kind to this realm, however, and dark days lie ahead unless someone can thwart the dastardly schemes of the Hourglass Coven.
In this campaign we will be playing through The Wild Beyond the Witchlight with additional content from DM's Guild.
We will be starting out as children, so no need to make characters just yet. This expansion set will allow you to play into your roles in the party instead of just having a character thrown into adventure.
If you would like to join please tell me the following about yourself:
1. How long have you been playing ttrpgs?
2. What class do you see yourself as? Not character, but you as a player. What class best fits your IRL personality?
3. How often would you be able to post?
4. What is one thing that you expect out of an adventure campaign?
5. What is one thing that you would not like to see in a campaign?
6. What is your favorite part about ttrpgs?
7. Why do you want to play in this campaign?
EDIT: I will be using Roll20 for maps. If you do not have an account it is free to sign up, and best viewed on a PC. You can view on mobile/tablet if you go through a browser but is kind of buggy.
1. I have been playing TTRPGs on and off for about 4 years.
2. I think reasonably, I would be a wizard based on my current skills.
3. I could post at least once or twice a day.
4. For an adventure campaign, I expect, well, adventure. Unusual things, weird circumstances, etc.
5. I am not a huge fan when everyone always goes to combat as their first and only solution. Like when their is no scouting and avoiding, or running when the battle seems hopeless.
6. My favorite part about TTRPGS is being involved with telling a story. I am not just reading it, but participating in it in way that most other forms of media can't replicate. (Video games being another exception)
7. I have been interested in exploring other planes, and specifically the feywild, for a while, but have yet to come across a campaign taking place somewhere other than the material plane.
1. How long have you been playing ttrpgs? I started around ten years ago, with Legend of the Five Rings as the first roleplaying game I ever tried. I've since then tried World of Darkness (specially, Changeling the Dreaming), Call of Cthullu, and a few others.
2. What class do you see yourself as? Not character, but you as a player. What class best fits your IRL personality? Well, the last time I did one of those stupid funny quizzes to kill time, I got a bard, and I surprisingly liked the result.
3. How often would you be able to post? Quite often, once a day normally.
4. What is one thing that you expect out of an adventure campaign? Just ... fun, which comes in a wide variety of ways (the happier moments, the dramatic moments, those situations in which you are 99% you are going to die but then miraculously survive ...).
5. What is one thing that you would not like to see in a campaign? Unkindness among players (I don't particularly love when it happens among characters, but the one I do not tolerate is the former).
6. What is your favorite part about ttrpgs? They give us that little spark of fantasy in your daily lives! I like thinking about the story, the characters, how I can deepen them, give them a touch of reality even if they don't exist at all... I guess it helps evade from reality (in a healthy way, of course).
7. Why do you want to play in this campaign? I've had my eye on it since I read it is related to the Feywild, which is a domain I've never been able to play in and that I'm very much attracted to. And I got to say that this questionaire, which is so different to what we usually find in a recruitment thread, has really caught my attention. Oh, and the thing about starting as kids!
1. A few months. I have been doing text-based roleplays forever (~20 years), but Baldur's Gate 3 got me interested in D&D and I love it.
2. Hm...Paladin, I think. I'm very loyal and protective of people I care for and always try to help, but can also be stubborn about doing things the way I want.
3. Daily. I got no life.
4. A unique setting and story to interact with.
5. Minimal character interaction between PCs. I dislike it when it feels like we are each having a one-on-one rp with the DM instead of the characters discussing things and working together while getting to know each other.
6. How the story evolves based on the characters and how they work with each other, leading to more meaningful development for the characters and story.
7. I have never played it before and it sounds fun!
1. I'm relatively new to the hobby. I've played in five or six live sessions, but am at a point in my life where trying to get a large group dedicated to get together on a regular basis is nearly impossible. I'm thinking play by post might be more my speed.
2. Probably a rogue. I like trying to approach things from different angles, see what others don't, that sort of thing.
3. I'm on the east coast, and should be able to at least check in on my phone every couple hours during the day. I could probably post like four or five times a day (that's about what I average when playing online games of werewolf) but it depends how quickly things are moving.
4. A challenging but achievable goal or series of goals.
5. I guess I don't really have enough experience with bad campaigns to know what kind of things I'd want to avoid. As long as everyone's having fun, I'm good with whatever.
6. The level of freedom and creativity afforded to the player. I like video games too, but ultimately you are limited to a fixed set of dialog options, mechanics, etc that the developers anticipated, whereas when you have a human running the show the sky's really the limit.
7. I think that DMing is something I would like to get into, but I feel like I should really have some experience as a player in this format to get the hang of it first.
Quick question: Will this be run on-site in a forum thread (+Roll20 for maps) or somewhere else, like Discord?
Most likely on a private thread here, unless the group as a majority would like to use discord. there are a lot of things on here that make pbp easier, but discord sends notifications to your phone. So really it could go either way.
2. What class do you see yourself as? Not character, but you as a player. What class best fits your IRL personality?
Warlock. It's got tons of flexibility, doesn't require a ton of memorization, is powerful, and lets you play a face character caster which fits me well.
3. How often would you be able to post?
At least once every 1-2 days.
4. What is one thing that you expect out of an adventure campaign?
I want my character's choices to matter and multiple ways to solve problems.
5. What is one thing that you would not like to see in a campaign?
I'm open to most things if the other players are comfortable. I would prefer that players be open about any issues and ensure everyone understands the difference between OOC and IC stuff. Clear communication is key.
6. What is your favorite part about ttrpgs?
I love roleplaying, using my character to interact with the story and other characters and seeing how they develop is my favorite part of RPGs.
7. Why do you want to play in this campaign?
I've heard that this campaign involves a ton of roleplaying and character choices matter.
Would love to play in this one. Got started on a PbP of this on the Paizo forums a while back but unfortunately the DM had RL issues and had to step away.
1. How long have you been playing ttrpgs?
As a player, since the early 80's. Gamemastering since the late 80's.
2. What class do you see yourself as? Not character, but you as a player. What class best fits your IRL personality?
As an engineer in real life, I guess I would have to go with an Artificer. That being said, I tend to play characters that don't necessarily fit my IRL personality.
3. How often would you be able to post?
Daily during the week and at least once on the weekends. More so if the flow of the game dictates.
4. What is one thing that you expect out of an adventure campaign?
Much like the previous poster, I want my character's choices to matter and multiple ways to solve problems. Not a fan of railroady campaigns, although I fully recognize that there are times that is unavoidable.
5. What is one thing that you would not like to see in a campaign?
I'm pretty flexible on most things but there are certain scenarios that come up from time to time that I would prefer see "fade-to-black" in terms of narrative.
6. What is your favorite part about ttrpgs?
Exploring the personality of new characters and their interactions with fellow players and NPCs.
7. Why do you want to play in this campaign?
I started this game before (even starting off as a kid like is mentioned above). I loved what I got to play of it and relish the thought of being able to start in again and this time hopefully finish it out.
@MightyMathias: One question, not that it matters to me either way, but with the impending release of the 2024 PHB, which ruleset do you intend to use?
I’m going to stick with the 2014 rules. I don’t really plan on learning and understanding a new set of rules before running this. I’m sure there will be a lot of similarities in the new rules, but I don’t want to spend that kind of time before starting this campaign.
Backstory: I’ve ran this exact campaign IRL, but we never got to finish. We maybe made it halfway through before our group was forced into too small numbers. So I’ve been left on a cliff hanger and have to start all over again. So I don’t want to wait for the new rules, even longer to learn them 😂
1. Since about '78. I played Chainmail back then and remember when the Gray Hawk supplement came out for that, then the red his.
2. A lazy halfling bard/cleric. I have tons of fantastical dreams and ambition but rather site in my hobbit hole smoking my pipe over a nice whiskey. I've play bass guitar since '85 but have never put the time into it to have been able to make it anywhere. Now I play at our church and preach some.
3. A lot. I'm usually checking in every couple of hours during the week and a handful of times on the weekends.
4. Personal growth and learning. I really dig seeing how others interact with one another and overcome obstacles and resolve conflict. I learn something in just about every adventure I play.
5. Orcus, Vicnea or Uz. Seriously though, pouting whining players. Yeah the CR 1 goblin rolled a 19 to hit your 1st level fighter with an 18 AC thanks to the family heirloom gleaming platemail your wearing, yes he did 8 points of damage to you which is 2/3 your HP, then he did that crazy thing where he hides again as a bonus action. Crit happens, let's move the game and story along.
6. The stories. I'm a story teller at heart and love a good story. All of it, from character backgrounds, to session zero how the party met to finally slaying the BBG.
7. New frontiers! New places. New stories. I know nothing about Feywild other than what was in Critical Role tv series. Should kinda cool.
1. I have only played D&D IRL once a couple of years ago. On the same day, I played a little Starfinder. I have been playing PbP on DDB since 2018. I used to be part of a similar thing — taking turns writing parts of stories online, but not including dice rolls — in the mid and late '90s.
2. I, as a player, would probably be a bard. I am both musical and a writer. I might would multiclass as a cleric as I am also very involved in my church. As for what class best fits my IRL personality, I'd say I don't really associate classes with personalities. Any personality can be any class.
3. I can generally only reliably post once a day. Sometimes, I can get on more often.
4. One thing that I expect out of an adventure campaign is to have a DM that is focused on every player having a good time. DMs who are self-centered, who put their own NPCs before the PCs, who ignore posts (or parts of posts), and who don't care enough to help every player feel truly involved in the story quickly turn me off to a campaign.
5. One thing that I would not like to see in a campaign are too many players. If the party is more than six players, I feel lost in the shuffle and loose interest.
6. My favorite part about ttrpgs is the crafting of a story in a collaborative way.
7. Why do I want to play in this campaign? The idea of starting as children interests me. I'm curious how the players are going to grow into traditional characters.
Note: If you decide to go Discord, I'd like to withdraw. I don't like playing PbP on Discord as I can usually only post once a day, and on Discord, it's too easy to feel left behind by those who can post continuously.

What sources will be allowed for character creation? Would homebrew be allowed?
All sources are allowed, Homebrew would just have to be discussed beforehand.

Same here. I've had the experience of playing pbp on Discord while the rest of my games were on Dndbeyond and I didn't like it, it was messy for me.
Having the thread here and the maps in roll20 is fine by me, though (I'm more used to have them in owlbear.app, but roll20 is totally fine)

Just so everyone knows I will probably be picking players and starting on Monday!
I'm sorry but I'm going to have to withdraw, another campaign I had been waiting on just opened up.
@MightyMathias: Good to hear. Out of curiosity, how many players do you intend to take on for this?
