We will be playing the 2014 Starter Set adventure using the 2014 rules. You can use the premade characters from the set or create your own, using:
2014 Player's Handbook
Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
Adventure Hook: Your dwarf patron and friend, Gundren Rockseeker, hired you to escort a wagon of supplies to the frontier settlement of Phandalin. Gundren went ahead with a human warrior named Sildar Hallwinter to attend to business in the town whilst you followed with supplies. You will be paid 10 gp each by the owner of Barthen's Provisions in Phandalin to deliver the supplies to that trading post safely.

Background
Backstory (choose from the premade characters' backstories as these are tied into the adventure but you can add your own fluff too; include a reason why you knew Gundren)
Backstory: Brungir comes from a large and extended family of Smiths and Miners, tracing their lines back hundreds of years to Citadel Adbar. While most of his family where happy to stay put and never deal with the world outside of their mountain holds, he on the other hand wished to see the world. originally setting out after learning that his distant cousins the Rockseeker's had the same thoughts he made his way out into the wider world.
Finding it harder then he had thought to make his own way, Brungir ended up joining with a band of mercenaries, using his skills as a Smith to keep their weapons and armor in working order. Eventually the band found a cushy job working in Neverwinter as both city guards and bodyguards for nobles. Things were going well for a time until he was pulled away from the forge to help deal with a young noble that had supposedly went missing.
The trail led them to find that the noble had actually joined a wannabe cult of demon worshiping youths that were attempting to summon a demon to gain power. Upon stopping them the father of the young noble wished to have it swept under the rug but Brugnir fearing it would only end up happening again reported the son. This angered the noble and led to them not only refusing to pay but blacklisting the mercenary group to the point they were unable to find work.
Having been forced out from the group the Smith found himself without work, quickly having to burn through his savings to keep from being forced out on the streets. As he was contemplating leaving Neverwinter behind, he received a missive from his cousin Gundren, offering him a job to transport provisions and perhaps a large opportunity for smithing work.
Passive Perception: 13
(Hope it is OK but I tool the background of the dwarven cleric and mixed it with some of my own ideas.)
Backstory: (Basically Human Fighter 2's) Born to a human mother and an elven father, Seraphine Thornvale was an infant when her family fled the eruption of Mount Hotenow, leaving behind their once-prosperous home in Thundertree. Raised in hardship, drifting from village to village, she grew up hearing stories of the village’s former glory. Now working as a dock laborer in Neverwinter, Seraphine stood up to an abusive ship captain, earning the respect of her peers and revealing the hero she was destined to become.
Haunted by the ruins of Thundertree and the dragon rumored to lurk there, Seraphine has sworn to reclaim her ancestral home, drive away the dragon, and prove to herself—and the world—that she is the hero her family always believed her to be.
How she met Gundren: Seraphine Thornvale first met Gundren Rockseeker while working at the Neverwinter docks. He frequently hired her to help unload valuable supplies for his mining expeditions. Over time, they developed a mutual respect—Gundren admired her strength and determination, and Seraphine valued his vision for restoring prosperity to the region. When Gundren mentioned plans to reclaim the lost mine of Phandelver, it struck a chord with her own goal of reclaiming Thundertree. Their shared drive to restore what was lost solidified their bond, and Seraphine vowed to help him however she could.
Passive Perception: 13 (18 for two minutes per day while shifted)
Backstory: (Halfling Rogue) When Marcus was born to his human mother, Zara, he didn't quite look the way she'd expected. She'd known the pointed ears were likely, but her baby's nose was a little too upturned, his eyes a little too yellow. People in town whispered about the elven man that had passed through town and taken an interest in her, saying that he'd not seemed quite right, and that perhaps he had been were-cursed. Zara tried to give her son the best upbringing she could, but with the way everyone looked at him, he knew he'd never be fully welcome in his home, so he left. He traveled around for a few years, picking pockets and accepting payment from gangs to rough up people that owed them money, until he heard word of a growing town called Phandalin. He figured anyone dumb enough to go chasing gold and silver in the hills would make an easy mark, so he went to Phandalin as well. It's hard and dangerous to go it alone in a place like that, so he fell in with a local gang called the Redbrands and ran with them for a few months. He thought he was doing pretty well for himself until he got word that somebody had convinced Glasstaff, the leader of the Redbrands, to put out a hit on him. As he was packing his things to skip town once again, his bedroom window shattered and an arrow embedded itself in his side. He fell to the ground, bleeding profusely, knowing that he was close to death as footsteps pounded up the stairs outside his door. In a desperate plea for help, he mouthed a silent prayer to the Raven Queen to spare him so that he may find the person who did this to him and deliver them to her as penance. When the Redbrand enforcers broke through his door, they didn't find the dying pickpocket they had expected, and instead came face to face with a snarling wolf-like man wreathed in tendrils of shadow. Marcus fled Phandalin before the bodies could be found, traveling north to Neverwinter and hiding out there.
Not long after arriving in Neverwinter, he met a dwarf named Gundren. He wasn't a criminal like those who Marcus was used to working with, but that was a welcome change. He began working odd jobs for Gundren as a bodyguard, enforcer, scout, and information-seeker. Between these jobs, he worked to uncover and master the new abilities he'd been given over death and shadow, and also kept an ear to the ground for leads on the Redbrands. He recently heard about someone named Halia Thornton who might prove to be an ally, but visiting her would require him to return to Phandalin. Marcus went back and forth over this in his head for several days before Gundren contacted him about escorting a wagon to Phandalin. Taking it as a sign from the goddess of death, or whatever other power had gifted him his abilities, Marcus accepted the job.
Is it okay to use the 50% sale price rule for selling items to make a few changes to starting equipment (ie. selling a crossbow, buying a shield, etc.)? I currently have a shield and thieves' tools in my inventory from doing that, but can go back to just regular starting equipment if you'd prefer that.
Edit: With adding more spellcasters, I might actually do a more melee focused build so I’ve now just done the shield with my starting gold since artificers already get thieves' tools.
Character name: Treela Class (start at level 1): Cleric (knowledge) Race: Fairy Background: Acolyte Backstory: (Elven Wizards)
Like most fairies, Treela was curious about everything. Unlike most fairies, she was willing to spend the time and energy to actually learn. So while she was still young, she joined a temple of Oghma.
Throthal has spent most of her life dedicated to Oghma, all-seeing god of knowledge, and spent years learning the lore of the multiverse.
Personal Goal: Reconsecrate the Defiled Altar. Through visions delivered in your sleep, your god has called you to a new mission. A goblin tribe has made its lair in an ancient ruin now called Cragmaw Castle, where they have defiled a shrine once sacred to Oghma. Now dedicated to the vile goblin god Maglubiyet, the altar is an offense to Oghma that must not stand. You’re sure Oghma has greater things in store for you if you can complete this quest. In the meantime, your visions suggest that Sister Garaele—a priest of Tymora, the goddess of luck—can aid you in the town of Phandalin.
1: What's the stat generation method? Currently assuming point-buy. 2: How often would you be willing to let Wild Magic surges be rolled? Got a WM Sorcerer idea and being able to reliably recharges Tides of Chaos when casting a levelled spell is a big to the attraction of the character. (But at the same time it's a DM-dependent thing, so checking your views here.)
Character Name: Phait Class: Sorcerer (Wild Magic) Race: Mountain Dwarf Background: Noble (will used 10gp from starting gold to purchase hide armor for him) Backstory: (Adapting Human Fighter 1's) Phait's family had power back in Neverwinter before the eruption of Mount Hotenow. When he met Sildar Hallwinter his hopes of turning the now meaningless title into something real delighted him. And knowing Sildar and Gundren are good associates, he was more than willing to help out Gundren and come to Phandalin to help restore law and order. Hello, I am interested in joining your Play by Post campaign. I am accustomed to 5e rules and have played and DM’d several of them. It looks like the party could use a Rogue and I will take the pre-made Halfling Rogue, as is.
Please Direct Message me if you have any questions and if I make the cut. Thank you for your consideration.
Unfortunately, the fifth player has not responded. If they have not responded by tomorrow, I will choose somebody else in their place. Hopefully, we can start the campaign as soon as possible!
As they haven't replied, I think that Cheez_weezle should replace them. You can click on the campaign link to join and I will start the campaign in a couple hours! (I think the premade characters are already on D&D Beyond)
Will that cause problems with them playing the rogue since I've already adapted that character's backstory to use for Marcus? I think the Human Fighter 1 backstory that Vitus had adapted for their sorcerer is the only one not already represented in our current party.
First time running a play-by-post game!

Great! Just 1 or 2 people left before we can start the campaign. By the way, that is totally fine DarthDrizzt.
I kind of forgot but could you also say your passive Perception? (I will edit the first post!)

I'll probably play a bard if there is still room for me to join, but I'd like to know what to do for ability scores?
I will be going on a first-come first-served basis so these people are accepted. Sorry if you didn't make it.
Here is the campaign link for those people: Lost Mine of Phandelver PbP
Okay, have fun y'all!
Any updates on our fifth player or when this campaign might be set to begin?
Unfortunately, the fifth player has not responded. If they have not responded by tomorrow, I will choose somebody else in their place. Hopefully, we can start the campaign as soon as possible!
I am still interested and will run the pre-made rogue, if you like
I can also step in if needed.
For what's worth,still interested if there's a slot.

Agreed! Rather than Cheez_Weezle (sorry), VitusW will be the fifth party member due to his backstory and the fact he posted first.
