Ardana is focussed on the ferryman, ready for any quick move it might make, sword at the ready. So when Tarysaa burns the webs, and the spider beings come forth, her warrior instincts kick in, and she leaps forward to engage the spider before it can reach her less armored compatriots. She brings her sword to bear, but the awkward rush and the watery environment throw her balance off and the sword glances off the hard hide of the spider and splashes harmless into the water.
The large spider can't believe he sees his opponent partially unbalanced by the empty shot and immediately tries to take advantage with a savage bite to the arm.
If Ardana gets hit, she must pass a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking 8 poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage (4) on a successful one.
The insidious mandibles manage to insinuate themselves in an insufficiently protected spot and cut the flesh of the arm of the brave tiefling paladin! Who realizes that the toxin in which said mandibles are rich is trying to weaken her... but she manages to resist the worst part of the effect.
The triumph of the large vermin is short-lived, however: a shard of ice summoned by Tarysaa darts towards it's monstrous butt. The large target desperately dodges, but the shard, impacting against the wall, explodes in a glacial burst, threatening both the spider and the humanoid-spider...
The indomitable spider once again avoids the worst, promptly crushing himself against the opposite wall. In doing so, however, he inadvertently hinders Spider Humanoid, who emits a halfway between a hiss and a growl as he shivers from the supernatural cold.
Enraged, the monstrous hybrid quickly begins to walk on the wall, just like a spider could do, passing Ardana (who tries to punish it for its impudence, but misses again, disoriented by fighting an enemy who is literally walking on the wall) and descending between Koran, Woodrow... and Tarysaa! Judging by the murderous look in his faceted eyes, it is precisely the elf wizard who is his main target!
Elias in the meantime takes advantage of this to weaken the spider with the combined force of magic and mockery!
[[ OOC: It's a fail! Elias rolled1d4, dealing 2 psychic damage to the spider. Plus, the monster will have disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. ]]
Round 1
After escaping so many physical threats... the spider gives in to the verbal ones! As if he understood the defamatory insults, he shakes his head violently, as if doing so could make the magical influence escape - and while he is so busy, he probably won't be able to fight well.
Elias grins as he sees the giant spider reel from his words, its many eyes twitching as if trying to shake off the enchantment."Ah, so even creatures of instinct have egos—how delightful."
But there’s little time to revel in his success.
The grotesque spider-hybridskitters up the wall with unnatural grace, positioning itself near Koran and Tarysaa before lunging in for the attack. Koran reacts instantly, his monastic training taking over as he delivers a devastating series of blows, each strike landing true.
Elias quickly assesses the battlefield, calculating his next move. "Excellent work, Koran! Let’s finish this before they can recover!" His mind races—should he strike the spider again with another psychic jab, or perhaps bolster his allies with inspiration?
His eyes flick briefly toward the Fiendish Ferryman, who still watches in silent amusement, his skeletal fingers resting idly on his oar. Elias feels the weight of that infernal gaze but quickly pushes it aside.
There’s still a fight to win. Raising his voice, he prepares his next spell.
Looking back at my post, I think I used the combat dice roller wrong. I said 6 for damage dice instead of 1d6, which could be why it shows all 3 as max damage. Allow me to provide alternate rolls to assuage my sense of guilt.
After the 'warm-up' encounter with the tentacled worm, Koran is perfectly focused and his strikes are timely, precise, deadly. Spider Humanoid had perhaps hoped to surprise the party in the same way he had managed to do with Ardana, but he faces a bitter (and painful) disappointment!
A sudden jab breaks one tooth, preventing the hybrid from reacting in time to dodge a strong kick to the knee - the third strike, landed with the edge of the hand on its neck, the monster barely sees - much less manages to dodge it - and leaves the creature staggering!
[[ OOC: Taking Woodrow's Turn, to keep things moving ]]
Seeing Spider Humanoid in trouble, Woodrow uses his experience to try to eliminate him once and for all: he raises his shield to block his view and immediately attacks from below with a lunge of his Longsword...
The experience gained in the past has not been lost during the peaceful time spent in Rassalantar! Spider Humanoid is completely confused by the veteran's maneuver and does not even see the blow coming - but the hybrid feels it, as the steel penetrates the abdomen and a twist ravages its insides...
With an agonized cry that soon fades into death, the hideous creature collapses to the ground. The Ferryman, gives a vague smile, while making an imperceptible nod of approval with his head.
Woodrow - I accidently click a dagger attack instead of the longsword
Wood's longsword almost sings as it clears the scabbard, as Wood advances on the spider. The blade glistens in the little light available as he spins and brings it to bite into the spider flesh, attack roll 20 + 7 = 27 for 21 pts of damage
Elias’ eyes widen as he watches the giant spider’s fangs sink into Ardana, the sickening crunch of the bite echoing through the chamber. His stomach tightens as he sees her stagger slightly, blood welling from the wound.
Poison… It has to be.
His mind immediately flashes back to the potions he purchased from Fonkin, remembering that Ardana had not taken any for herself. His fingers hover near his satchel as he calls out to her.
“Ardana! Are you holding strong, or do you need aid?” His voice carries both urgency and concern. "I have a potion if the wound is worse than it looks!"
He watches her closely, scanning for any signs of weakness or poison seeping into her veins. If she falters, he’s ready to rush to her side and administer the potion himself if necessary.
Ardana, aware that, thanks to her strenuous resistance, the allies behind were able to easily eliminate the other opponent, continues to fight with unshakable confidence - surely now her fellow party members will run to assist her.
It is therefore with confidence and determination that she swings her imposing blade, striking a blow at the head of the monstrous spider!
