Soon, the redshirts return and report a series of cave openings in the mountain, they found a few recent corpses they assumed to be from the merchant vessel and two row boats on the beach. ” Mr Eclipse, you will take a party to check out these caves, looking for clues to match the poem. Master Thagal can map any caverns you venture into so you can be sure to make it back out.” He pauses a moment before continuing,
” Myself, Sinmana and the redshirts will get a closer look at the ship. We will meet up back here before dark”
“Well, lads—and lady—we’ve hours yet before sunset and the caves lie before us. It seems the bodies have been removed back to the other ship if those rowboats are no longer in the shore?” (Were they?) Or maybe pulled inside to be eaten at leisure?, he thinks.
”Captain ordered us to explore the caves, looking for clues to solve the riddle of the map’s poem. So let’s get to it. Throgg, we’ll follow in your footsteps. I’ll watch the forest behind us. And whoever is a good tracker, try to find out what happened to those bodies?”
Eclipse will lead the group to the first cave. Lead from behind, that is, keeping an eye to the rear to ensure a clear escape path.
Throgg likes that black hole (pointing at cave #4). Not on ground, and not way up high.
He begins walking into the cave using his darkvision to lead the way. He pats Kel on the head, “you watch for traps too little friend. I see good, but sometimes hard to figure out how things like traps work.”

You can see through the trees that the landing boats are still on the beach. There are no signs of bodies being dragged towards the beach or into into cave 1…

The white arc of Eclipse’s brow arches higher when he notices the boats are still there. “No sign of dragging in either direction,” he quietly muses almost to himself. “Where did our dead friends go, I wonder…”
Throgg and Kel move into the first cave , followed closely by Zerk, Lagazara and followed by eclipse. You move down the 40’ x 10’ tunnel that turns slowly to the left in a gentle curve. It is getting extremely dark and the air temperature is quite cool. Kel feels right at home in this tunnel. It is clear it isnt a natural tunnel and it it surprisingly clean.
( let me know how far you wish to move forward at a time and roll perceptions as you wish)
You guys make your way deeper into the cave and it’s getting nearly total blackness, even for those with dark vision. Throgg notices some snuffed out torches on the ground as you move, also on the roof of the lots of fist sized holes begin appearing. At first, just one here or there and then the roof becomes filled with them. You reach a Y shaped split in the tunnel. One heading Northwest and the other Northeast.
“Hey fellas behind me. Don’t trip on dead torches. Maybe someone should light one and shove into weird holes. Maybe bug holes? Maybe water holes?”
”any idea on which way to go? NE might be toward the other tunnels and we will end up back where we started. Or NW could do that. Making decisions makes Throgg’s head hurt.”
Zerk volunteers to scout a little ways down the NE ( 30’) “ i always generally go left in such situations, but maybe the right direction is right?” He laughs a little and lights himself a torch
Zerk, Eclipse and Throgg work their way carefully down the tunnel. The smooth cut stone gives way to a more naturally shaped cavern shaped like a deep bowl. The torchlight helps Throgg’s dark vision pick up further details. There is a small ( 2.5’) ledge that runs around the lip of the bowl and along the walls, equally spaced are small alcoves. The closer alcoves you can see they are not too deep, maybe large enough for Throgg to stand in with nothing sticking out. The ones further away are too dark to tell. Leading down into the bowl itself is a few trails of rubble. Shells, a variety of bones and dirt. The bottom of the cavern is filled with undulating sea water, rising and falling with the current.
After a few moments taking in the scene, the others quietly move up behind you as well. Lagazara scanning the rim of the bowl for movement around the alcoves, there seems to be 8 of them. Thagal peers over the edge of the bowl and the light of Zerk’s torch flickers off some kind of ancient writing, that appears to continue around the bowl and in neatly scribed lines down into the bottom, or at least to the waters edge.
” very interesting. There is some words inscribed across the surface. I have no idea what language this might be, but it is extremely old..let me take a rubbing..” he says as he fishes out a piece of parchment and some charcoal. He will rub the letters with the broad side of his charcoal and then press the parchment over it, using a rock to burnish it for a print. 18.
Thagal is able to get a full sheet worth of clearly printed language, though the image of course is reversed. He will careful tuck it away in his pack to be examined later.
Zerk will say, “ Master Eclipse, what do make of this place? Doesn’t seem to go no where unless there is a door in an alcove or in the water”
Throgg looks down at the water and then drops one of the mango fruits into it. Knowing the fruit would normally float, he observes it to see if there is a current or downward pull.

Zerk cannot see how the corpses were removed or which direction they were taken
“Throgg would think maybe not the murder cave”

( cave 1 or cave 4?)
(Sorry I missed he “directed” us to the first cave. Just do #1 then since that was said first)

30’ increments, 19 perception, darkvision 60ft
Eclipse (Perception: 11) keeps pace behind Throgg and Kel, big cat ears perked but his mind still on the missing bodies.

Eclipse slinks behind Zerk, helping him scout and employing his Darkvision to keep from tripping on torches or holes. (Stealth: 12+5=17)

“Mr Zerk, I can’t say I know. I half expect an audience to form along that edge and watch an arena event unfold in the water…”
Eclipse carefully peers into the water, though not stepping into it. he tries to peer into the depths for further clues. (Perception 3+5=8)
Also, does this in fact seem like an arena? Or something different? (History 8+1=9)
Eclipse, though unconvinced of the accuracy of his own theory, smiled wanly and shrugs. Maybe someone else will have a better idea, he hopes.
