Origin feats are specifically defined in the 2024 rules. You are limited to those feats for the feat from a background. No non- origin feat is available before 4th level
So basically if I took a non 2024 background. There would not be a feat. Understand.. guess it’s a 2024 background then
Yes, basically what DM has said is if you take a background that includes a feat, then you don’t have to do anything else (you have 1 feat already). If you take a background without a feat, then manually add an origin feat to your character so you also start with 1 feat. That way everyone is on even ground when starting.

Thanks. Somehow I missed the origin part when I first read it.
Backgrounds in older D&D books don’t include ability score adjustments. If you’re using a background from an older book, adjust your ability scores by increasing one score by 2 and a different one by 1, or increase three scores by 1. None of these increases can raise a score above 20.
Similarly, species in older books include ability score increases. If you’re using a species from an older book, ignore those increases and use only the ones given by your background.
Also, if the background you choose doesn’t provide a feat, you gain an Origin feat of your choice.
I appreciate everyone’s patience with me as far as the backgrounds and origin feats issue. This is my first recruiting thread using the 2024 rules, and I don’t have a succinct way of explaining down yet.
I’ll keep open recruitment until Monday, don’t want to wait too long.
I’m happy to take someone new to 5e. If you have any questions about character creation, feel free to ask here or in a dm.
i know I’ve painted a very vague picture of the world, I will be working with everyone I invite to tweak backstory to fit, but feel free to invent a bit, it’s kinda the glory of homebrew.

Name Kaito Yamato Race Human Class Monk ( Way of the Sun Soul)
Background Sailor
Kaito Yamato was born on a ship at sea to parents who were sailors. He grew up learning how to sail and navigate, and his mother taught him some basic healing skills.
When Kaito was 16, his parents died in a storm that wrecked their ship. He was the only survivor.
After that, Kaito spent a few years drifting from place to place, taking on odd jobs to get by. But he felt lost and aimless.
One day, Kaito stumbled upon a group of monks training in a temple. He was drawn to their discipline and focus, and he started training with them.
Now, Kaito is a monk, using his skills to protect people and fight against injustice
Dheaoun, or brother Day as he's known, has been assigned by the church to chronicle the events of reclaiming the keep and the resettlement of the area. He looks for a group to join with. Though officially here on behalf of the church, his personal reasons for being involved center on something he read in a long forgotten, obscure text about the history of the settlers here and the keep itself. A mention of a wizard and his fantastic library within the keep. He searches to see if that tale is true.
In the heart of bustling [insert campaign city], amidst the towering spires of the royal palace and the ceaseless hum of urban life, resided a man known as the Ferret. A master assassin, his reputation preceded him, whispered in hushed tones among the criminal underworld. With a touch as silent as a whisper and a precision honed to perfection, he was a force to be reckoned with, a phantom in the night. Yet, beneath the cold exterior of the assassin, a flicker of humanity remained, a spark of compassion that refused to be extinguished. In the midst of a particularly perilous mission, he crossed paths with a woman named Elena, a ray of light amidst the shadows. Her kindness and unwavering spirit captivated him, thawing the icy walls he had erected around his heart.
Love blossomed between them, a fragile flower nurtured in the clandestine world of the assassin. For the first time, the Ferret found himself yearning for a life beyond the shadows, a life filled with laughter, warmth, and the gentle touch of Elena's hand. Driven by this newfound love, he resolved to abandon his life of violence and seek a peaceful existence with Elena. He retired from the assassin's guild, shedding his identity as the Ferret and embracing the name Samosh, a man seeking redemption.
Together, they built a life, a haven of tranquility amidst the chaos of the city. They were blessed with two children, their laughter filling their home with joy. Samosh found solace in his family, his heart overflowing with love for Elena and their children. He took up hunting and guidework to provide for his family, life was grand.
However, the past refused to remain buried. Samosh's former associates, seeking to eliminate any loose ends, tracked him down, targeting his family in a brutal act of vengeance. The tranquility of his home was shattered, the laughter replaced by the chilling silence of death. Consumed by grief and rage, Samosh was plunged back into the darkness he had so desperately tried to escape. The Ferret resurfaced, driven by an insatiable thirst for revenge. He hunted down his former associates, exacting retribution for the lives they had taken.
Yet, as he stood over the bodies of his enemies, a chilling realization dawned upon him. Revenge had not brought back his family, nor had it eased the pain in his heart. It had only consumed him, leaving him adrift in a sea of despair.
In the end, Samosh found solace not in revenge, but in the memories of his family. He carries their love within him, a beacon of light guiding him through the darkness. He dedicates his life to protecting others from the same fate that had befallen his loved ones, becoming a guardian of the innocent, a silent protector in the shadows.
Saadia had lived her whole life in the same small town. Always full of energy, she was quite talented with the lute as a child. As she grew, she became something of an entertainer in town, playing music, dancing, and even singing now and then. She always talked about leaving the 'stupid' town, but it never happened. Perhaps it was her friends. Or perhaps she was just a bit afraid of going.
Her friends were a bit of a notorious group in town. And she developed skills for sneaking around, getting into places she maybe shouldn't have, and being quick with her fingers. It was always just for the fun of it though, nothing malicious. Or maybe that's what she told herself. Over time she developed a little bit of skill with lighter weapons. Between exploits with her friends and performing, she was a frequent visitor to the couple of taverns in the area, much to her family's chagrin.
As time has passed, her friends have begun to settle down. They have definitely become less interested in continuing their previous exploits. And as Saadia's younger sister and even younger brother have gotten older, her parents have been even more critical over her being a bad influence. All of that, combined with a realization that playing the limited venues in her hometown, her chances of ever being recognized for her musical abilities was poor. So, when she heard about the offer from Duke Brexas, she packed up her things and set out for Threshold.
Orphaned at a young age, Elhandir was raised in a small temple to Erathis in the Independent Duchy of Remlakis. The priest there, an older man named Borok, treated Elhandir as his own son and he was brought up under the lawful edicts of Erathis's worship. Elhanidr was a dedicated acolyte and served the temple diligently, and grew into a quiet but confident young man. Above all he was faithful to Erathis and knowing that she stood by his every step gave him purpose.
It was this deep faith in Erathis, or rather her fallible church, that would wound Elhandir and change the course of his life. One fateful day it was revealed that Borok had been stealing funds from his congregations donations and frittering them away in a gambling addiction. Many of his acolytes were aware or suspected, but chose to say nothing for fear of reprisal. Elhandir, blinded by his faith, had not seen it until the authorities game to take Borok away. Borok's actions, and those of his fellow acolytes', were a betrayal of everything Elhandir had believed in so deepy and it almost broke him.
He prayed to Erathis for her guidance, prostrating himself before her altar for a full night and day. He was about to stand and leave, wondering whether even Erathis had left him, when he heard the faintest whisper in his mind.
"Balance the scales," the voice said.
A comforting warmth filled Elhandir in that moment as he was suffused with the power of order. His eyes glowed with a white incandescence and bright crackles of energy traced along his dark skin as his hair turned a shock white. Erathis had blessed him with a fragement her divine power so that he might do her will.
His faith in Erathis was stronger than ever, but he could not stay in the temple. It was no longer a place of order. Erathis had left it and so would he.
Instead, the town of Threshold was in need of its own temple, and what better place to foster Erathis's influence than a frontier town, so Elhandir petitioned the Duke for permission to begin work. With the Duke's blessing, Elhanidr made for Threshold with a renewed purpose.
