In the time of the Old Kingdom of Remwyre, the Keep was the last bastion of civilization on the Wyld frontier. In the decline of organized civilization in the region, the keep, and the village that grew around it in the Valdronai pass, were lost. This brings us to now. TheIndependent Duchy of Remlakis, a small but vibrant fiefdom loosely allied with the dominant Cleraptis Empire, has laid claim to the area, and wishes to reestablish the Keep and surrounding area to tame the wilderness and add to its mercantile success. You have been lured to the frontier town of Threshold by an offer from the Duke Brexas himself to venture to the Old Keep and see what’s there, and what will be involved with reclaiming it.
The Old Keep is a play-by-post 5e game running in this forum. It’s a world I’m making up, fairly standard, slightly old school, cause I’m old. Basic ideas is the party will start trying to reclaim an ancient Keep, and we’ll branch out from there.Yes, I’m ripping off Keep on the Borderlands and the region is influenced by the BECMI Expert Set’s setting.
I’m looking for 3-6 players with to play 2nd level characters. Point buy or standard array, using 2024 rules, although obviously older subclasses and such can be used if they weren’t redone. I hate the 2024 backgrounds. You are welcome to use them, or do an old style background (even custom) and get unrestricted ability score bonuses. You just have to add an origin feat manually in the character sheet. Fixed hp, milestone leveling, and 100gp on top of starting equipment, which you can sell for full price. Thematically, you are members of your subclass already, just don’t have access to the abilities yet.
As far as deities, there are two major Deities I’d prefer players stick to.Erathis, Lawful Goddess of civilization, and Melora, Chaotic Goddess of Nature. They each have various sects and cults working for them so most domains apply to each, and they accept a lot of alignments among their followers. There is a neutral god Korak who is worshipped by makers, but his direct followers are fairly limited.
Please state your intended subclass.
All 5e races and subclasses are playable in the 2024 rules.
Backstory: One day Calix was frolicking in the woods with his tribe when woman materialized from a tree. The rest of his tribe fled in terror, but Calix stayed and Melora spoke to him, promising power in exchange for signing a binding pact with her. When Calix's power was discovered by his tribe he was cast out. Now he spends his time as a mercenary for hire, using his newfound power to earn coin.
Kaelen Shadowstride was born under an ill omen, or so the elders of his people whispered. His kind—elves touched by death, their lineage tied to something beyond the mortal coil—have always walked the line between the living and the lost. Some called them cursed, others blessed, but Kaelen never gave much thought to either.
He grew up among ruins, raised by scavengers, explorers, and those who made their living prying secrets from the bones of the past. His family followed no banners and swore no oaths, moving from one forgotten place to the next, selling lost artifacts to those with coin and curiosity. He learned early that ruins were never truly empty—predators, curses, and the echoes of the dead all lurked where civilization had crumbled. His people’s death-touched nature gave them an edge; they could feel what others could not, sense when a place was wrong. It saved them more than once.
Until, one day, it didn’t.
A ruin swallowed his family whole. Whether it was a trap, a curse, or something worse, Kaelen never learned. He only knew that he was alone, left to make his own way. He used the skills they had taught him—moving unseen, listening more than speaking, and treating every old stone with wary respect. He sold knowledge when it suited him, guided the foolish when it paid well, and kept himself alive by staying one step ahead of the past’s long reach.
Now, word reaches him of the Old Keep—a place abandoned in the collapse of civilization, waiting to be reclaimed. The Duke of Remlakis seeks mercenaries, scouts, and adventurers to chart its remains. To most, it is an opportunity. To Kaelen, it is something more.
The death-touched know better than to trust the silence of ruins.
Class: Fighter (Battle Master) Bard (College of Valor)
Background: Gambler (Custom +Lucky feat)
Stats: Point Buy
Backstory: Kelwin Thorne should have been a legendary duelist—at least, that's what he tells anyone who'll listen. Born in the bustling streets of Remlakis, he grew up running bets, dodging guards, and—more often than not—losing spectacularly at dice. His quick hands and quicker tongue got him into as much trouble as they got him out of, but he always had an uncanny knack for survival. It wasn’t until he “accidentally” cheated a duke’s nephew in a high-stakes card game that things really went south. A hasty "misunderstanding" at swordpoint led to an even hastier exit, and now Kel has found himself in Threshold, signing up for an expedition that—on paper—sounds far less dangerous than being hunted down for gambling debts.
Of course, Kelwin isn’t just a fast talker. Beneath the bravado, he's a skilled duelist, using speed, cunning, and a frankly absurd amount of luck to stay one step ahead of his foes. He fights like he gambles—reckless, showy, and just barely scraping by.
Why is he really here? Who knows. Maybe there’s treasure in the Old Keep. Maybe he needs to lay low. Or maybe, just maybe, Kelwin Thorne is finally about to win big.
Ooh! Definitely interested. I only started in the 5E era, so Keep of the Borderlands has been largely a mystery to me, though I imagine it’s good from how much people talk about it. Placeholder for now while I come up with a character I’ll have one done by tonight, most likely.

Hi, I'm Raccoon_Master, a young genderfluid actor, writer, explorer, and bass vocalist. Pronouns They/Them/Theirs
My Characters: Brorminthe Devout Crusher; Morgrom the Cunning Summoner;Theathe Rebellious Beauty;
Name: Taiga Species: Human (flavored with frost giant ancestry) Class: Fighter (Runeknight)/Sorcerer (Runechild) [Runechild subclass home-brewed for 2024 rules adaption] Background: Rune Carver (Runeshaper feat instead of origin feat) [both home-brewed for 2024 rules adaption] Backstory:
Discovered as an abandoned infant near the Valdronai Pass, Taiga—a human with an unknown frost giant ancestry—should have perished in the biting cold. Yet when the dwarves of Grimridge, with Gorrim Flintcarver among them, found her, she stared up at them with solemn resolve. Moved by the child’s fortitude, they took her in and named her Taiga, after the icy forests of their homeland.
Though she grew to nearly twice the size of her dwarven kin, Taiga embraced their ways. She learned to fight in heavy armor, matching dwarven grit with her own powerful frame. At the same time, she developed a mysterious knack for carving ancient runes—no teacher needed, as if the knowledge lived in her blood. This strange talent revealed a hidden wellspring of arcane power, marking Taiga as a Runechild sorcerer.
Gorrim Flintcarver, the wandering craftsman who had been among the dwarves that found her, encouraged her gift. He presented Taiga with a set of exquisite rune-carving tools, bearing the inscription, “There’s no scrap wood—only pieces not yet used.” When Duke Brexas put out a call to reclaim the Old Keep for the Duchy of Remlakis, Gorrim urged Taiga to answer. Armed with dwarven steel, arcane runes, and a steadfast heart, she now travels to Threshold, ready to carve her destiny on the frontier.
Link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/141409842 Notes on 2024 rules: This character will use a home-brew version of the Runechild subclass which is adapted to the 2024 rules. This means the subclass will only be available at 3rd level and subclass specific spells cannot be substituted (similar to the official treatment of Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul subclasses) but these spells are all updated to the 2024 list of spells. There are no other changes to the subclass. Furthermore, the character uses similarly a home-brewed version of the Rune Carver background which grants the Rune Shaper feat, which has no other change as updated spells to their respective 2024 versions and an updated equipment list using 2024 rules. The Rune Carver background already comes with a (sort of origin) feat -Rune Shaper- so I didn't select a 2024 origin feat for character creation. Appearance: in spoiler below
Please note: Despite this being a keep on some borderlands, it bares only the slightest spiritual connection to The Keep on the Borderlands. I’m far more likely to use those BECMI references (Bargle the Infamous anyone?) than anything resembling the original Keep.

Xaci life of a gnome has been one of longing He has always wanted to explore the world He was always told that the “big ones” on the surface of the world often did not take kindly to the ‘small folks’ interface. He wants to see for himself he has also heard rumblings amount the elder gnomes how they will need to open up trade routes otherwise they will run out of food in a year since this years harvest was destroyed due to a mushroom virus

No, pretty much any 5e race is allowed, I prefer the versions in mordenkainens or later.
Thanks for the quick response.

Ooo, sounds interesting. I will definitely get something together for this (though I don't know BECMI or Keep on the Borderlands)
Name: Asariel Species: Aasimar Class: Bard (College of Dance) Background: Wayfarer (2024) Backstory: Asariel grew up on the streets. He never had a surname, and went by the name of John for a while. He soon learnt that he had some angel ancestry when his eyes started glowing golden. It was then that he took the name Asariel. This spark in him allowed him to thrive even on the streets. Those around him naturally took pity on him, especially due to the way he had with words. He could gain sympathy from anyone, even convincing a passing noble to give him their coat on a particularly cold day. He also found he was able to heal his friends when they got into fights with nothing more than his hands.
Around the same time, he found joy in music. It might have been the celestial ancestry but he picked up instruments quickly. In a matter of weeks he could play simple tunes. In a month he was earning money from his tunes, and within a year he was playing tunes that were worthy of the angles (in his opinion at least). His music was soul lifting, and those who heard it loved to dance to it, but no one danced to his music, more than himself. He loved to dance while he played, and soon found that there was a way to bring magic out through his music, and started to learn how dance could be both defensive and offensive, but was yet to master that (level 3 feature!).
His playing had reached the ears of Duke Brexas, and he was no longer living on the streets, having made enough of a name for himself to move into a house. He had no fixed address, moving to wherever his music was most wanted or needed, but never struggling to find somewhere to stay. He had found a faith for Erathis while learning music, realising that his music could bring people together and build up civilisations, and so when Duke Brexas had asked him to help reclaim the Old Keep, he could not refuse, and found the idea exciting.
