"If I can't get it to pop this time we can smash it all," he replies with grim determination. This shiny devil spawned drawer guard would fall, if it was the last thing he did.

“Let him not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall.” — Elrond
The lock finally yielded with a sharp click, and the drawer slid open. Inside lay two objects.
The first was a fine silver key on a matching length of silver chain, glinting in the torchlight. Its craftsmanship was delicate, almost ornamental, suggesting it was a necklace to be worn as much as a key to be used.
Beside the key ... a wand!
Slender, polished darkwood inlaid with delicate silver filigree in a pattern of multiple, interlocking star-burst designs.
Outside, the storm pressed harder against the house. Rain lashed at the shutters, and the moan of wind through unseen gaps in the timbers made the study feel all the more claustrophobic.
"A little threat always works. Even against an inanimate object. Though knowing this house, I can't guarantee that was an inanimate object..." Alaric is interested in both objects, but as Gooterat opened it, he allows him first pick of either/both/neither object.
The gnome sucked in his breath when he saw the wand. He reached out a trembling hand, taking hold of it and concentrating with all his will to see if he could get a sense of its power. He made room for Aleric to inspect the key. "Need to check the papers, too," he mumbled, eyes still locked on the wand, taking in every design.

A little drool dripped down the starry eyed gnome's chin. He wiped it away absentmindedly and then shook his head like a wet dog, rejoining the company presently.
He placed the wand on the desk, along side Silver Spark. His eyes lingered on the magical items, but forced his gaze to the papers on the desk. He picks them up and gives them a closer look, skimming as best he could. His life in the gutter didn't involve much schoolin'.

The Last Will and Testament of Loren Halvhrest. A will and death certificate names the four members of the Halvhrest family: Loren, his wife Theodora, their daughter Regan, and their son Vastion. An addendum notes that Loren died of "tenacious deviltry of the leftmost lung."
Deed to the House. A sheaf of dry legal documents includes the deed to the house and rights to the surrounding land. These documents enumerate the land's features, including "Ruins of Castle Laventz & its prior owners: Lady Mara Silvra, Draz Volen, Lord Cordon Silvra."
Boff has no interest in documents and magic wands. He couldn't read them anyway. No, better to stay and watch the corridor. Be alert for threats. A soldier's job is to be prepared, to be ready... to see the danger coming before it arrives... Maybe something could come from one of these side doors...
Boff glances up and down the corridor. He reaches out... grabs the handle of the closest door, on the right of the corridor. He turns the handle and cracks the door ajar, peering inside...

Boff remains on guard in the hallway, just outside the study door.

Gooterat lifted the slender wand from the drawer, and as he did, a thrum of power prickled against his fingertips.
There was no mistaking it ... this wand was magical.
