“Let him not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall.” — Elrond
The lock finally yielded with a sharp click, and the drawer slid open. Inside lay two objects.
The first was a fine silver key on a matching length of silver chain, glinting in the torchlight. Its craftsmanship was delicate, almost ornamental, suggesting it was a necklace to be worn as much as a key to be used.
Beside the key ... a wand!
Slender, polished darkwood inlaid with delicate silver filigree in a pattern of multiple, interlocking star-burst designs.
Outside, the storm pressed harder against the house. Rain lashed at the shutters, and the moan of wind through unseen gaps in the timbers made the study feel all the more claustrophobic.
"A little threat always works. Even against an inanimate object. Though knowing this house, I can't guarantee that was an inanimate object..." Alaric is interested in both objects, but as Gooterat opened it, he allows him first pick of either/both/neither object.
The gnome sucked in his breath when he saw the wand. He reached out a trembling hand, taking hold of it and concentrating with all his will to see if he could get a sense of its power. He made room for Aleric to inspect the key. "Need to check the papers, too," he mumbled, eyes still locked on the wand, taking in every design.

A little drool dripped down the starry eyed gnome's chin. He wiped it away absentmindedly and then shook his head like a wet dog, rejoining the company presently.
He placed the wand on the desk, along side Silver Spark. His eyes lingered on the magical items, but forced his gaze to the papers on the desk. He picks them up and gives them a closer look, skimming as best he could. His life in the gutter didn't involve much schoolin'.

The Last Will and Testament of Loren Halvhrest. A will and death certificate names the four members of the Halvhrest family: Loren, his wife Theodora, their daughter Regan, and their son Vastion. An addendum notes that Loren died of "tenacious deviltry of the leftmost lung."
Deed to the House. A sheaf of dry legal documents includes the deed to the house and rights to the surrounding land. These documents enumerate the land's features, including "Ruins of Castle Laventz & its prior owners: Lady Mara Silvra, Draz Volen, Lord Cordon Silvra."
Boff has no interest in documents and magic wands. He couldn't read them anyway. No, better to stay and watch the corridor. Be alert for threats. A soldier's job is to be prepared, to be ready... to see the danger coming before it arrives... Maybe something could come from one of these side doors...
Boff glances up and down the corridor. He reaches out... grabs the handle of the closest door, on the right of the corridor. He turns the handle and cracks the door ajar, peering inside...

The door groaned open beneath Boff's hand, but what lay beyond was no musty room in an abandoned manor. Instead, the air shimmered and shifted, and the dwarf found himself peering into a medieval scribe's chamber. The smell of old parchment and melted wax replaced mildew and rot.
Narrow windows let in a weak, ashen light through the stone castle walls. A simple desk of heavy oak stood near the center, its surface crowded with quills, an overturned inkwell, and a single open ledger. The pages fluttered faintly as though caught in a phantom breeze.
The pages were marked with ominous, hurried script. The ink had run in places, marred by faint, dark stains that looked uncomfortably like dried blood.
The room had a ghostly stillness, frozen in time, almost as though Boff had stepped not into a room in Halvhrest Manor at all, but rather ... into a memory of Castle Laventz itself.
Gooterat gives the area a quick scan, hoping to find a scroll case or something to protect the documents before taking them. "The sisters would want to see these," he says before carefully tucking them away. He pauses to offer the papers to Aleric, should he like to give them a look before stowing them in his pack.
His eyes roamed back to the desk top and the enchanted items before he turned back to the shelves and giving them a quick search for anything that bore arcane markings or other magic related words.

Alaric is uncomfortable being in separate rooms after his experience with mirror Alaric so he will try usher Gooterat to follow Boff. "Should we open all doors and look from the corridor before going inside any more rooms? Get a feel for what danger we might face before it creeps up on us?"
The little Gnome grabbed Silver Spark and the wand, hastily following Aleric into Boff's room. "We can give the wand and key a closer look when we get back downstairs," he says to Aleric, tight on his heels.

Alaric and Gooterat joined Boff in the enchanted room.
A ledger sat upon the scribe's desk, its ink blurred by age and faint rust-colored stains. An excerpt caught the heroes' eyes.
"... Lady Mara swore vengeance upon Volen ... and something in the shadows answered her. I heard her scream that night. Louder than thunder. Inhuman. It was no the voice of any mortal woman."
After reading the passage, the illusion of the medieval scribe's chamber faded and was replaced by the walls of Halvhrest Manor. The adventurers were no longer in a castle chamber, indeed ... they never had been. Rather, they were in a nondescript bedroom. A single page from the ledger remained, however, fluttering to the floor once the illusory desk beneath it vanished.
Opening the other doors, a quick examination of the second floor revealed:
Boff looks around him with some confusion as the illusion drops, changing the environment around him. These strange magics don't agree with him, and he leaves the room in frustration. Moving along the corridor, with caution tempering his impatience, he quickly checks the doors before returning again to the east side of the floor. Then when the others are ready, he will lead the way into the north-east room (bathroom?)

Gooterat lifted the slender wand from the drawer, and as he did, a thrum of power prickled against his fingertips.
There was no mistaking it ... this wand was magical.

More books in here! Boff calls out to the bookworms in the other room, before stepping inside to check for any monsters hiding in corners.

There is nothing else of note in the study.
Green dots are rooms you have entered. Red dots are doors you have not tried. Boff is currently exploring the room on the right.
