Shinbone was built as a trade stop between larger cities, but when ore was discovered within its hills it quickly became a boom town built on the backs of a steady influx of would be miners. Over time, as the dig went progressively deeper, creature from the surrounding wood began to descend on the town, and horrible monstrosities kept finding their way to the surface-- drive upward by the constant invasion and destruction of their subterranean habitats. The town's elders opted to shutter the mine or the public good, an act that generated a significant backlash as well as a steep economic downturn. As jobs dried up so did trade and soon the town was a hollow version of itself, with boarded up buildings and empty homes in disrepair still dotting much of it main street. Those who stayed were a heartier sort, living off the land and doing their best to establish an economy built on a barter system. It wasn't ideal, but was safe, and the townsfolk have lived in this way for decades since.
A year ago, things changed. Carlsbad Mutterall, owner of Mutterall Mining Works, a company that specializes in revitalizing older or les profitable operations, came in and reopened the mine. Mutterall offered good, if somewhat low paying jobs. Jobs brought back the populace and now the town is on its way to thriving once again. But as son as the mine as opened things began to revert to the way they'd been when the old min was still in business. Attacks from creatures that rarely come above ground have become exceedingly common, and there's a constant stench in the air--sulfur and slate, with thick layers of dust covering nearly every surface. this year's crop return has been disappointing, some say worthless, making the townsfolk here even more depending on the revenue generated from the mine so they can buy food as opposed to growing it themselves.
The mine is, to many, worth celebrating. But there are those in the town who remember the dangers of diffing too deep into the hills, and their voices may be vital to the town's longevity...
Today, marks the 1-year anniversary of the opening of Mutterall Mine, and everyone is out to celebrate! From the high class to dirt farmers, all are turning out for the festivity. This is where you find yourselves today, as modest adventurers, perhaps here to enjoy the local color, or just passing through, but whatever the reason, in this moment, the excitement has ramped up a bit as the opening speech is about to be made by Carlsbad Mutterall, and all are gathering around the entrance to the Mutterall Mine, which rests in the foothills a short hike from the town's main road.
(Go ahead and introduce yourself, perhaps why you're here, and what you are doing as you wait for the speech to begin! I am also assuming that you all already know each other, maybe not well, but consider your group already established. Maybe you just finished another adventure together? Who knows! :))
Ori, inveterate tale enthusiast, is giving the others a tour of her home ‘town’. She wanders down the (far more) busy Main Street, hardly noticing if the others are with her or if they are doing their own thing.
She is a tall, and slim, wood elf. The faintest touch of green is visible across her skin, her hair is more brown than red, and she wears a crown of flowers that cover some carved ash tree antlers that she has fastened into her hair.
“This is where the Strognan boy pulled my hair and I cast my first hex! Ohh and look that’s Rory Whisperpaw — he used to be a great cat burglar until he tried to rob a dragon, and they ended up falling in love!”
”Oh look, that’s where I found a little gnome who needed help building a machine that would take him to the moon. We only got as far as the sky before a great Roc carried him off never to be seen again. Oh wait. There he is! Hello Mr Fullpocket!” Any who look at who she is pointing see a human man, avoiding her eye.
She carries on in the same fashion, until the speech starts or the others get her attention back on the present.
Jadziafollows after Ori and the rest, casting curious glances around as the wood elf shares stories about her hometown. She smiles at Ori's enthusiasm, even if the town itself seems to have seen better days—dust coats just about everything, and there's a permanent smell of sulfur in the air. Still, she understands her companion's happiness at returning home.
Jadzia herself has never truly known what that feels like. Her childhood was spent traveling with her parents' performing troupe, and adulthood hasn't looked much different. In fact, her time with Ori and the others—though not very long—has already been the longest she's stayed with the same group in years!
The bard is a tall and lean air genasi, with blue skin and eyes, and long white hair that tumbles freely down her back. It moves as if caught in a breeze only she can feel—a common trait among those of her kind. A finely crafted bandore rests across her back, but today, she's chosen a different instrument. Before the speech begins, she perches atop a stack of crates near the entrance to the mine and begins to play a light tune to entertain herself, and the waiting crowd.
The melody carries a sense of weightless freedom, like a breeze slipping through open skies. It stirs something in the hearts of those who hear it—a wistful longing for flight, as if, just for a moment, they could spread unseen wings and rise above the world, soaring high enough to see it all with new eyes. (Performance: 23)
Cramaris doesn't believe story about dragon so he takes a look at Rory Whisperpaw if there is a hint of it being true and if a cat in cat burglar means that he is good at climbing or it is more literal.
"Isn't Roc some sort of flying animal or that gnome's machine actualy worked and resembled it?"
Cramaris was going to ask who is in charge of fighting underground creatures after hearind Jadzia's music decided to enjoy festival before looking for job.
"Isn't Roc some sort of flying animal or that gnome's machine actualy worked and resembled it?"
Ori pauses in the middle of describing how there had once been a tree that had fit a family of seven in its boughs, right in the centre of what is now a shrine to a goddess of luck. She looks at Cramaris, confused.
"A rock is a solid piece of earth. That's easy. If you want a tough one, what sound doesn't one hand clapping make?" She continues walking, clapping her fingers against her palm in her left hand, looking intensely strained.
A well-dressed man with an extraordinary mustache steps forward to address the crowd. "As many of you know, I am Carlsbad Mutterall. This mine was abandoned when I purchased it, and in just one year we've seen unparalleled growth, all due to the hard work of this community. I thiank Mr. Percy Waaver, and the rest of the elder councile, for your leadership. The deeper we dig the darker it gets, but I'm no afraid of the dark...and neither are these men. The darker it gets, the more ore to plunder, and the more ore we dig the brighter this town's future seems to be! I'd trade darkness for light any day of the week. Darkness for light!" There is a cheer in the crowd. "Darkness for light!" they echo. "Darkness for light!" cheers Mutterall once more. The crowd follows suit. As Mutterall cheers a third time the crowd screams, as roaring forth from beneath the earth come several pairs of claws.
(Combat starting! To keep things simple, I will use a group initiative, so the party will go first, then the enemy. I don't plan on using maps either so assume you can probably move in or around most things unless I mention something in particular, don't stress about it too much.)
Jadziastops her music the moment Carlsbad Mutterall begins his speech. She fidgets with the flute in her fingers, spinning it absentmindedly as she listens. "Darkness for light?" she mutters to her companions. "That doesn't sound quite right to me."
When the ankhegs burst forth from the earth, the air genasi lets out a sigh. "As I was saying…" She jumps down from the crates she'd been perched on and levels the flute like a conductor's baton at one of the creatures. "Darkness for light, is it? Looks like someone took that way too literally. Did you crawl up here hoping to join the mining crew, or are you just lost on your way to the world's ugliest petting zoo?"
With a smirk, she twirls her fingers as the insult twists into arcane force, lashing out at the creature with mocking precision.
Action:Vicious Mockery on any of the creatures. WIS ST DC 13 or take 6 psychyc damage and have Disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn.
Duncan had been quietly following the others. He didn't want to talk as he knew that if he opened his mouth he would laugh at the ridiculous stories Ori was coming up with. He was fully aware there was a grain of truth in some of them. But barely.
He was about to respond to Cramaris before the speech started and the ankhegs (predictably based on how the idiot Carlsbad was speaking) burst out. He wasted no time chanting a quick prayer, and blessing Ori, Cramaris and Jadzia.
I assume there are 3 or more ankhegs and there is a way to include them in area of Faerie Fire without icluding us and at least one ankheg failed saving throw. If ankheg mocked by Jadzia failed save against Faire Fire I target him, if not then nearest ankheg that failed it.
Action surge was used to make attack with a hand crossbow +1 and bonus action for normal hand crossbow.
Do you know how to make rolls with advantage in character sheet? Game log is messy. I would have advantage attack roll with normal crossbow either from spell or vex if attack with a +1 crossbow hits.
As the Ankhegs burst forth, Ori appears next to Cramaris in a spray of soft and refreshing magic as all hell breaks loose. “It wasn’t a rock machine, it was metal and leather and cogs, silly,” she says, even as her soothing misty magic washes over him and he feels himself bolstered. (Refreshing Misty Step)
[Cramaris gains 3 temp hitpoints].
Ori pulls a light crossbow, spiraled by strange mushrooms and a bioluminescent residue. The whole weapon smells of swamp and she aims it the Ankheg that Cramaris targets. Then she spits on her crossbow.
Witch Bolt. Attack: 17 (15 + 2 blessing). For 18 Lightning damage on hit.
There are 2 creatures that emerge from the ground, amid the screaming populace. They are in the middle of a large crowd of people too so...here we go! (Remember everyone is there for the ceremony! :) )
Jadzia mocks the first creature to come up! (WIS save: 7)
Duncan blesses their allies!
Cramaris tries to light up the bugs...and a few bystanders! (Dex saves: Ank1: 14 Ank2: 9) They then surge with action and fire at the first Ankheg and hit twice!
Ori blasts the large bug with a lightning-fied bolt! (hit!)
Ankheg 1 (-33): They grab a bystander in their claws and begin crushing them!
Ankheg 2 (uninjured): Lashes out in a feral rage and spews a massive line of acid as several people get splattered by acid! (Cramaris and Ori, Make Dexterity Saving throws, DC 12. Take 13 acid damage on a failure, half on a success. Don't forget to add bless!)
As the crowd goes into a panic, a robin flies into the fray and immediately transforms into a weather-beaten looking woman, wearing ragged, homespun clothing. A couple people in the crowd shout, "It's Kerrigan T'Kay! From the forests! She's here to save us!"
Kerrigan joins the battle! She brings out a scimitar and swings at the already wounded beast! (Attack: 26, 6 slashing damage on a hit)
Party up again! The crowd is running away as best they can!
"Oh dear!" Jadzia exclaims, watching in horror as the remaining ankheg tries to cover Ori and Cramaris with acid, along with many other bystanders. "No, no. That’s not nice. Why don't you leave us alone and get out of our sight?"
With that, the air genasi lifts the flute to her lips and gently dances her fingers over its holes. Though no sound escapes the instrument, a discordant melody begins to echo inside the ankheg’s mind...
Action:Dissonant whispers. WIS ST DC 13. Damage: 11, and on a fail save the ankheg needs to use it's reaction to move as far away from Jadzia as possible.
Ori screams as the acid washes over her, taking 13 damage. She vanishes in a puff of misty air and faint fey laughter, appearing 30 feet back in a puff of refreshing air, or as many feet sideways to keep her within sixty feet of the ankheg.
[Refreshing Misty Step: Ori gains 5 temp Hit Points.]
Her crossbow kicks in her hand, and she fires a swampy bolt at the Ankheg with the crowd member in its grasp.
Duncan shouts at Ori "Your time has not yet come." as a wave of healing energy washes over her for 12points of healing.
If the person the dead ankheg grabbed (or one hit by acid) has been reduced to 0hp (if the NPCs get any death saves this is) Duncan will then run over to them and cast spare the dying (15ft range. But will aim to position himself between them and the living ankheg)
Jadzia resonates horribly at the beast and they scurry away a bit! (failed save)
Duncan sends a spell of healing at Ori and then reaches out to one of the affected townsfolk, keeping them alive for now!
Cramaris avoids the worst of the acid before taking a couple shots that hit the ankheg in the side! (both hit)
Ori blasts the bug after poofing away to a safer distance! (hit with advantage)
Ankheg 2 (-28) rushes at Kerrigan and tries to bite her!
8 to hit, 11 slashing and 5 acid damage
Kerrigan swings back with her scimitar! 11 to hit, 7 slashing damage. Anyone looking at her can see the expression of pain on her face, and it isn't because she is hurt.
The towns people are still scattering, screams and dust fill the air! (Next round ready!)
