Skritch (with a 13) you know that the realm of Muspelheim is one of the seven worlds destroyed or lost in the destruction of the Ragnarök. It was the home of powerful demons and fire giants, who all served the great giant Surtr. Everyone knows the legend of how Surtr slew the All Father during Ragnarök and was in turn destroyed by the remaining Aesir under the leadership of Freyr. Demons are mostly creatures of legend in the current age, a tale to scare children.
Vakas the lizard watches you unblinking. The collar around its neck looks valuable, fine leather and diamond studded. The little creature seems quite content to curl up in your tunic, occasionally peeking out to take a look around. (With a 16) you recall an extract from a book you once stole, at the time it sent a chill through you and now as it comes back to you the words are as clear in your mind as if you were still reading them from the page;
"But let this final word be carved upon the new world's stone. Hark, you children of the second sun, and do not forget the old fire. For the host of Muspelheim was burned but not extinguished; their essence lingers, sleeping in the marrow of the earth. You shall know their stirring when the winter snows steam upon the fells, when mountains breathe a hazy smoke, and when the hearts of men burn with a rage that has no reason. Beware these signs. Quench the hateful spark and guard the peace that was so dearly won. For the fire demons remember their age of ruin. And deep in the darkness, they wait only for a welcoming warmth to rise again and finish what their master began."
Dealuri you cast detect magic for the first time and even though it will not fully identify the dagger Vakas carries you do see from the shimmer of magic that surrounds it that it is indeed a magical weapon. You also note with interest that a glimmer of magic surrounds the lizard. Being new to this power you struggle to make out the type of magic you are seeing.
Rachus (with an 18) you recall the last few verses of a song and also remember that there are conflicting stories about the legend of Surtr. Some say it was the great wolf Fenrir that slew Odin but all are certain that is was Surtr who destroyed the All Fathers power once and for all by sundering the world tree and obliterating the great realm of Asgard. You hum softly to yourself as you recall the words;
Surtr's sword, a flame unfurled, Consumes the whole of the dying world. The stars fall down, the heavens cease, As land sinks in the hissing seas.
But from the waves, a world of green, Is born again, washed pure and clean. A newer sun, a gentler shore, Where life begins to grow once more.
The stench of the kobold warren clings to you all, as you turn west toward the temple of Víðarr. The night is cold, and with the moon shrouded behind the thick clouds above the hard ground proves difficult to traverse.
Guided by the wounded Elvyn, you trudge onward. The day’s butchery had settled deep in your bones, a leaden ache that craves only rest. It has been a long day. Skritch make a survival roll as you search for a good place to camp.
keep an eye heavenward for the feathered predator that absconded with the goat on their way to the caves and, it seems, the party's ponies while they were in said caves, and
Do a Druidcraft weather check in case they should be seeking urgent shelter rather than seeing how far they can get before seeking a secure resting place.
His main goal is to rest up asap in order to recover his spell slots so he will be able to tend to Elvyn.
"It'd be a shame," he thinks (by accident he thinks it 'aloud' instead of just to himself), "to have come this far and gone through all this to have our objective succumb to his injuries before we could get him to safety."
Oh, and btw, Survival: 1+3=4 (plus, see below for the Help Vakas provided!)
Vakas uses his knowledge of “guiding” travelers in his past dealings to help Skritch to find a safe place to camp. When the do, he will make a warm bed in his cloak for “Little Buddy” (as he has named him), the lizard wearing the necklace. Vakas has taken a liking to him, petting him often and seeking comfort after the loss of his horse Vincent. He tries on his own and with his own new magical abilities to sort out what the dragon tooth dagger does. He has a special ability with daggers, he hopes that this one can accentuate that.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Once settled down at their camp Rachus will share the last verses that seem contradicting "How strange that there is such a difference on who did the deed. Perhaps it's a case of history being written by the victors."
“I can take first watch or any other watch that is needed.” She gathers wood for a fire and starts to pull out her tinderbox but then reconsiders. “I wonder what this will do,” she thinks before casting Create Bonfire cantrip. “Oh, this is fun!”
When it's his turn to keep watch that's exactly what he does. Plus looking around him at ground level as well. Plus climbing a tree if they're camped near on. Loves a tree climb, does our Skritch.
Skritch after a few false stats you spot an excellent place to camp and with the help of Vakas you lead the group to a secluded place of rest beneath a rocky overhang.
Vakas you spend the time to attune to the dagger : Dragontooth Dagger and you slowly begin to realise its potential.
You all take a long rest through what is a blessedly eventful evening. With dawns light you break your fast and head out once more, crawling your way across the bleak landscape.
As they walk, Skritch and Sunhill trot amongst them. He says, "I've, er, I've prepared some goodberries. Ideally they're to pick people up if they go down in battle. But they'll also serve for a day's rations if you get starvingly hungry.
"The same doesn't go for you, Elvyn. You, er, I think you should have some straight away after what you've, er, been through."
He gives Elvyn one and (OOC: DM please let me know if I need to expend any healing spell slots or Lesser Restorations to help Elvyn).
He also checks in with Ember in case she needs one. So Skritch will either have 9 or 8 to share or apply as needed after that, depending on how hard up they both are.
(also OOC: DM, with a herbalism kit, which Skritch has as well as proficiency in it, he can make Healing Potions, one a day over an 8 hour period. It says they cost 25gp of materials. Is that a thing of just wiping off 25 gp? Or do we have to go purchase specific things? it hasn't mattered since we haven't had that much down time, but wanted to understand. And let the group know too in case it's of use...)
Sitting around a campfire as everyone wakes, Vakas has been watching, holding his newly found dagger and watching in the darkness and the early morning light. He smiles as everyone starts to sit down by the fire and he recounts that he has recalled.
"But let this final word be carved upon the new world's stone. Hark, you children of the second sun, and do not forget the old fire. For the host of Muspelheim was burned but not extinguished; their essence lingers, sleeping in the marrow of the earth. And deep in the darkness, they wait only for a welcoming warmth to rise again and finish what their master began."
Little Buddy climbs up his arms, shivering and shaking for a moment, then settling in. He reaches up and pets him, then he calls over to Skritch, saying, "Last night, you said that you could do something, something magical so that.. I could speak to him? Can you really do that? Would you do that? I want to hear what Little Buddy has seen, and say hello to him, in a proper way."

"Most esteemed Vakas, I do believe I can, if not allow you to speak directly to each other, to come as close to doing so as possible. I will ritual cast Speak with Animals and then open my mind to you with Ekorre Telepathy - or what people in your world call... 'Telepathy'.
"Maybe this will enable you to speak through me to your 'Little Buddy'. Maybe. If not, I shall do my best to pass on as quickly as possible to, er, to LB your thoughts and, vickyverky, his thoughts unto you."
Skritch waits for Vakas to approve his plan then he says, "Well! Shall we then proceed and, er, see how we go...?"
Skritch sits cross-legged on Vakas' lap with Little Buddy sitting on his. When the ritual is complete he says to Little Buddy, "Now my good wee reptilian fellow, our large friend here would love to get to know you, er, better..."
Skritch twists round in Vakas' lap until he is facing him with Little on his also facing Vakas.
And, between the three of them, they see how they go...
d20: 7 As the others start to wake Thanadol slips out of his trance, morning sleepyheads! Let's hit the road and take care of the demon shall we? That dagger looks amazing on you!
"Yes, let's proceed, that sounds great Skritch. I can message too as well, if that helps. Introduce me, if you could, and let's see what this little guy knows, what was happening, and so forth. Tell him... well, tell him I like him, and he can stay with me if he wants..." Vakas reaches over and gives a scratch and rub to Little Buddy under his chin. He looks at Skritch and he seems uncomfortable in admitting that he likes the little guy. His lower lip juts out so that he looks as tough as you can be, when petting a lizard...

Dealuri watches as Skritch does the message thing. She realizes there is the possibility that she could also make that mental connection but understands that Thanadol is correct - there is a lot she needs to learn about magic before using it too much. She just hopes the learning does not involve a quiz on history or much reading. Out comes her longbow and she is ready to hit the road.
Skritch Elvyn and Ember gratefully take a Goodberry each, both offering their heartfelt thanks. Elvyn looks much steadier on his feet now, though the man looks like a weeks bed rest would better serve him than a trek across country. OOC: regarding potion making you can spend the 25g at any settlement (including the temple) to purchase the necessary ingredients. Mark it off as a custom item in your inventory or use it straight away. Also take advantage for your innovative use of speak with animals :)
Vakas you watch as Skritch performs his ritual. Little Buddy also peeks out to watch the entire scene with interest. Suddenly the lizard flinches, its eyes flicking excitedly from you to Skritch and back again. Skritch conveys your message and..
"Master?"the word pops into your head Vakas, much like it does with Skritch, and then, "Got any chicken?"
The lizard seems to know little of what the Kobolds were up to, referring to his previous owner as "dead meat." He seems grateful to be away from them and has a one tracked mind when it comes to food. He becomes very excited when you tell him you like him, scampering up onto your shoulder and leaning his little green head against your neck. (We can say that Skritch repeats the ritual in the morning so you can continue your conversation for a time as you walk).
OOC: I will post again this evening to show the results of Thanadols wilderness roll, in the mean time feel free to RP as you walk.
"Not any chicken right now, but at the next town I'll see if I can find some for you. For now, some rations, like we are having will have to do. Here ya go, Little Buddy. Say, where did ya get that fancy necklace? You're traveling with us, I'll keep you safe, Little Buddy. You can hang out on my shoulder, or inside my cloak pocket if you feel chilly. Here we go..." And so on and so forth. Vakas takes a liking to the little guy, and he appreciates Skritch's help with the communication.
