Ranger Kai moves towards Oswald to examine the same area.
[ooc: Looking down where the ropes hang, can Kai see the bottom with his 60’ dark vision?]
Kai delays anyone from lowering down the ropes until the group has learned as much as they can up here first. Additionally, Kai can contribute his rope to lower someone down, if they don’t trust these ropes to hold.

Alexander waits for the rest of the party to decide what to do. Grabbing a nearby rock, he throws it into the ravine and tries to time it on how long it takes to hit the bottom, trying to gauge the distance.

“Spirit. In every language in all the Realms, surface and Underdark, in every time and every place, the word has a ring of strength and determination. It is the hero's strength, the mother's resilience and the poor man's armor. It cannot be broken and it cannot be taken away.”
Oswald observes the crude carvings on the pillars; they don't seem to be written in Dwarven, despite being written in vaguely Dwarven runes. (If you know Goblin you can decipher what is written.) The rope looks like it's been here for a while but would probably hold people's weight if they go down one at a time.
Kai's investigation of the ravine wall finds notched footholds traveling up it; carved by goblins, no doubt.
Opal sees a ledge at the base of the rope, on which appears to be an old extinguished campfire. Irina sees it too.
The rock Alexander throws doesn't land on the ledge; it is a fair amount of time before the rock hits the bottom.

After throwing the rock down and not hearing it hit for a fair amount of time, he starts to feel nervous. He wouldn't want the rope to give way and plunge to the bottom. Getting up he walks over to where Oswald is examining the runes and notices that they are written in goblin. Knowing how to read them, he tells the group what it says.
"It would appear that these runes are written in goblin. Give me a second to translate and I'll tell you what it says, luckily I picked some of it during my time has a paladin initiate. They would send us out to clear out goblin camps that were terrorizing the locals and it made things easier when you knew what they were saying."

Oswald looks quite relieved when Alex comes over. "Thank Garl himself that you know Goblin." Coughing nervously he points to the nearest post and continues "In Dwarfish this rune indicates something quite rude. Although the other is a type of coffee I think."
Feeling more confident in the ability of the ropes to take the weight of an adventurer he will turn to Opal, and shrug. "I am fairly confident in the ability of the rope to take our weight. Although obviously that is not guarantee in way, shape or form and Muckbuckle and Raulnor Dungeon Management Services Ltd are in no way culpable in the event of mishap, injury or death." Brightening slightly he will look around the group, "On a lighter note, we likely have enough rope and strength here to provide a safety line, which is my professional recommendation in this instance."
Peering down to the ledge with the campfire, then to the rope, doubting her physical ability to climb down safely, cursing her lack of foresight to prepare a spell to make this safer for her,"I'm not particularly skilled at this sort of thing, I certainly hope i don't fall... Kai, do you think we could use those footholds as we descend, or would they be too small?" Irina will ask to her ranger companion, trying her best not to look too worried.
Alexander Wenzel Eusebius Beaumont Lvl 1 | Human | Paladin
Looking up from the goblin writing he is trying to translate hears Irina worry about not getting down safely. Digging out his 50' of hempen rope he holds it out for someone. "Here is some rope that we can use as a safety line like Oswald suggested. If it's not enough I'm sure someone else as some more. Me and Hunhow can help hold the safety line for everyone while they climb down. It will mean one of us will have to go down without one so I volunteer to be the last one down and go without the safety rope."

"I can assist. I'm a goodclimber." Kai offers, even as he is pulling out his own 50' of hemp rope and knotting it with Alexander's. "But, more importantly, though, who should go down first? Who is a good scout? Who should lead point?" Kai asks everyone since there is no apparent leader.
[@JoanBaxter From Kai's observations, does he feel that we can use the goblin's footholds to climb down? Kai's favored enemy is Goblinoids, if that gives any advantage. Let me know if you want me to roll anything specific.]
Irina turns to Alex, Kai and Blaze, a look of relief washing over her facewith a broad smile"Thank you everyone, I'm glad to be in such capable hands!", pondering on Kai's comment, Irina replies "Perhaps Oswald or Opal best go down first, you two both seem to be the most agile of our group" she turns to them both, waiting to hear their opinions.
It is about 20-feet from the top of the ravine to the ledge.
The goblin-carved footholds can be used to climb down, with or without the rope, though with the rope will be much, much safer.
The goblin-carved Dwarven runes, when translated, are various crudely-worded warnings to stay away, and the things they will do to anyone that doesn't heed their warnings.
Because you have the footholds, the rope and the additional safety line, climbing down is going to be fairly safe; roll an athletics check to climb down, 5 or higher succeeds.
"So, They'll slice off our arms and make us eat them, eh? They can certainly try! Heh Heh Heh..." Hunhow chuckles upon hearing what the runes say. (He's a gladiator, so any chance to fight is a good one.)
Oswald will examine the pillars and read the runes to the group. He will also examine the ropes to determine whether they are still capable of bearing weight should the party need them.
