Rowan follows along as best he can with all the explanation from Light and Witch smiling through the rhyming bits.
”The land of fairies is a real place? And Prismeer is there? Oh wow. That’s amazing. But these witches are really too and they’re stealing not just farm implements and voices but actual people now too? That just sounds evil. With or without help I would travel there to save Prismeer. How can you not? It just sounds like the best place ever.” Rowan says before looking at g’Reggie and the hobo. Did he know the hobo’s name? Right, Mullet. “Your special hoe would be there. And maybe your voice is there too. Do you think someone else is using it right now or is it kept in a jar?”
Rowan looks back at Light and Witch.
”How did you get here from there? There must be a road or a gate or something? And say we fixed Prismeer and you could go on without the deal, would you let me join your carnival?”
With the Group Chat connection still intact and Barria (presumably) within a mile, Mulligan would relay as much as possible of what was said to her. Presumably he couldn't repeat word for word as it happened but he could send summaries shortly after?
Once there is a bit of a lull in information coming from the Misters, Mulligan shares some thoughts with the others.
What are our priorities? Do we care more about ending the thefts and disappearances going forward or do we care more about recovering what we ourselves have lost?
If it is our own recovery then it seems we must face this coven and find a way to get back what once was ours. If it is possible.
If it is stopping the thefts and disappearances then having the Misters cross paths with Isolde would seem to do that just fine. They may be upset at having to once again run their old carnival instead of this one but it seems it was always a temporary swap anyway. Though this path does not seem to promise the return of anything or anyone.
That was a lot of mental conversation to send out so quickly, specially considering Mulligan had to do it twice since the g'nome isn't part of the group chat, and so Mulligan let those questions hang out there in the ether for a bit as he waited and listened some more.
Barria happily walks through the bushes to the other side as Burly holds them back for her. It takes all her attention to listen to the bugbear, some of the words so complicated the only way she garners the meaning was by context. "My, you sure are an educated man. You put my vernacular to shame!"
As what he is suggesting dawns on her, she is both intrigued and a bit scandalized. She knows how it feels to lose something so very close to her. She tries to put into words her thoughts, but they are a bit lost to her as she isn't sure what to do. But she looks up at him when he stammers and looks over to see what stopped him. "Umm.. is that your brother?" she inquires, unsure of what to say.
She is overwhelmed by the onslaught of information from Mulligan. She attempts to respond to let him know that is trying to pay attention, Priorities? Well, I would say first off, we want what we lost. But.. if we need more assistance from those two shadar-kai, I might have an idea. But I am definitely going to need some help.
The gnome looks a bit confused and a little scared of the bugbear seemingly speaking in multiple voices at once. But it does give him pause for thought, Mulligan's question also adds an aspect that the gnome had not thought of. He stands for a moment puzzling, as if working out a particularly difficult arcane circle in his head.
He takes a seat on the steps of the carriage since it appears the group is not going to be invited in anytime soon and he looks to witch and light, completely changing his approach to the situation, or at least seeming to. "what makes this carnival so much better than the other?
I honestly don't understand, a carnival is not much more than a place, yes it breathes it's own style of life into the attractions, but it is nothing without it's workers, it's masters, it's ideas and entertainers, it's food and it's guests... You say that once you argued with Isolde that your old carnival was better than this one, before you swapped ownership. But the only thing that changed between when Isolde had this place and you both having it... Is you! You cannot be afraid of losing something when it isn't the thing that made it so special... Do you understand?"
Mister Witch calmly answers the questions from Rowan and Greginald:
We don't know the way to Prismeer. I'm sorry. If you go there, it will have to be without our help. We simply can't risk messing with the Hourglass Coven. This carnival is a happy and wondrous place, something the other carnival will never be. I don't expect you to understand, but we are never going back to that. Never!
Barria has a plan, or the inklings of a plan, but apparently requires help from Mulligan and the others...
Mister Light glares at "Kettlesteam". With a vicious sneer, he simply breathes the word: You!
Thaco the clown has also now realised that the bugbear next to him is no bugbear, but rather the kenku in disguise, and he immediately attempts to tackle the shapeshifter. Kettlesteam releases a cacophony of laughter like that of an audience, and promptly changes appearance again to be identical to Thaco the clown. The two clowns tumble to the ground and begin to roll about and scuffle, and soon it's impossible to tell which is which.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
"well you both have a better estimation of your own lack of ability, so I'll not argue the fact that you can do it" G'Reg chides with a smirk at the carnival owners.
He then watches in amusement at the clowns fighting. Nudging Rowan he mumbles, "oh my, I've only ever read about his happening in adventure books, I wonder if anyone has a crossbow to hand and we'll see if we shoot the right one haha!"
Rowan listens to the owner's answers with a bit of disappointment but then his spirits pick up when Kettlesteam changes into a copy of the clown and the fight ensues.
"I don't have a crossbow," Rowan replies to G'Reg but then he claps his hands together. "Oh, this must be the distraction. But now I don't remember what we were supposed to do when the distraction happened. Have we already done it? That doesn't make sense though, right? A distraction should come before, not after. Unless this is before and I'm having trouble with time again. This is fantastic though."
Rowan turns to see if Light and Witch are indeed distracted.
Whether they appear distracted or not, Rowan takes a look around their wagon to see if there's anything of interest that might hint at a way to Prismeer or that the owners do know more than they're letting on. (Perception: 20; or if Investigation is more appropriate: 15)
Priorities? Well, I would say first off, we want what we lost. But.. if we need more assistance from those two shadar-kai, I might have an idea. But I am definitely going to need some help.
Upon mentally getting this from Barria Mulligan responds.
Shadar-Kai? Idea? What kind of help do you need?
Mulligan also mentally informs both Rowan and Martin and G'reginald that Barria has a plan and to be ready for instructions...
(Unclear if Mulligan would get to inquire about what help Barria needed before the fight ensues or not, but either way Mulligan sees no need to break up or shorten the fight. He may check in with Kettlesteam to make sure they are ok but mostly he's waiting to here about the plan and transmit it to others...)
To Mulligan in group chat with Rowan: Well of course Shadar-Kai, Mister Witch just told you that was what he and the other one are. Never mind that, yes an idea. If we can get either the pocket watch from Mister Witch, or that big wand thing with the weathervane top from Mister Light, they will help us to get them back. Think you can do that while they are distracted?
I could probably heat the items up to make elves drop them, but then there goes your surprise attack and there is no guarantee they will drop them. If the fight stops distracting them, I'll rush in if need be to prolong the distraction.
Rowan sends a message back "Oh, the gray fairy tale elves. I thought they were just from the stories. My parents said I would turn into one if I kept talking so much. I didn't think it was too likely as my grandfather talks a lot, way more than I do and he really likes to talked about the models of elf villages he builds. They're really interesting. I think he makes them 1/8th scale. But I am good at distractions too. My mom always tells me to stop distracting people. Do you think the pocket watch would help me with telling the correct time? I don't think I'd like to carry it in my pocket though. Do you think it would be okay to keep it in a pouch?. I'll start moving around in there, and you heat up the watch and Mr Mullet can grab it."
Without waiting for an answer though, Rowan decides to come right up into the wagon with Witch and Light and pulls his lute off his back and starts strumming a few notes.
"Now, this is one of my favourites," Rowan says to the owners. "I think it really shows the kind of asset I could be to the carnival."
As he plays, he swirls and dances around too, jumping up on to an empty chair or desk and then down again.
Mulligan sends the words into g'Reginald the G'nome's head and pauses a beat. There is already plenty of chaos what with the bugbear brawl and Rowan barging into the wagon and jumping on furniture, but more is always better.
Once g'Reginald responds, of once Mulligan decides he's not going to, he turns to the Misters and starts grabbing at them, trying to pull them off the wagon and push them into the fray.
Stop them. Before they hurt each other. Or us.
Mulligan sends this into one's mind and then the other while he is grabbing and pulling and trying to manhandle them towards the fight.
(In truth Mulligan isn't really trying to grapple the two Misters in any way but rather using it as an excuse and cover to try to pickpocket the watch off the rotund one. Sleight of hand: 13but if he gets "Help" via the fight or playing or whatever then a... 9. Ok, that did not go so well.)
Greg does not respond to Mulligan in any verbal way, telepathic or otherwise, though a mischievous grin does spread across his face as he crouches bracing himself against the floor and the whole carriage begins shaking, (cast earth tremor in a 10ft square area centered under the carriage) as the carriage rocks violently if either Mr Witch or Mr Light fall prone, (taking 6 bludgeoning damage as they do) then the weasel will jump from Rowan's shoulder and land upon the sprawled out Shadar Kai, biting them on the nose (19 to hit, 1 damage)
