Volkanica Action: Summon wildfire spirit 10 ft from the displacer beast. DC 15 DEX save (displacer beast is restrained and auto fails) or take 6 fire damage.
ooc: Restrained imposes disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws. Unfortunately, it is not an automatic fail.
As Gedyr leapt back in the last exchange, the dire wolf’s predatory instincts took hold. It lunged forward with a sudden snap of its massive jaws, aiming to catch him mid-retreat. The bite came with the weight of its body behind it, claws tearing at the earth for traction as it sought to pull him down.
Current Round
The wolf’s momentum carries it in a half-turn as Gedyr closes the gap again. To a casual observer, the beast’s movements might seem swift and savage, but to Gedyr, time feels stretched thin under the pulse of the Bladesong. He slips around the creature with agile precision, vaulting over its broad back. Mid-air, he sweeps his blade in a practiced arc, spitting the words of power meant to bind his foe in the echo of a Booming Blade.
The steel cuts only air this time, the spell fizzling without its anchor. Gedyr lands lightly, choosing to remain close, his stance low and ready for the next exchange.
The dire wolf wastes no breath, its gaze locked on the elusive target in front of it. Hackles raised, it steps in with heavy paws, circling to the side before snapping forward in another brutal bite, its breath hot and fetid in the narrow space between them. Its massive head swings with dangerous force, seeking to catch Gedyr in its jaws and drag him down into the dirt.

Volkanica
The vines tightened further as Volkanica worked her magic, the forest answering her call once more. With a sharp gesture, the air around her shimmered, and a blazing wildfire spirit took shape only ten feet from the trapped predator. Heat rippled through the space as the restrained beast twisted to avoid it, but the snare at its limbs held fast. A searing wave of flame washed over its shadow-wrapped form, drawing a low, furious growl from deep in its chest as the heat bit into flesh.
Without pause, she gave the next command. The spirit flared upward, rising thirty feet into the canopy before spitting a concentrated jet of fire toward its target. The bolt struck true, burning through the twisting haze and disrupting the displacement magic entirely. The air crackled, and the sharp scent of scorched fur cut through the damp green smell of the forest.
Keeping her distance, Volkanica stepped back, placing thirty feet between herself and the struggling creature. The magical vines and her blazing companion now stood between predator and prey. The beast’s outline no longer flickered; its location was clear. With a guttural snarl, it lashed its tentacles violently, ripping and twisting against the vines in a desperate attempt to break free. The vegetation strained but held firm, refusing to yield. As it settled again its outline flickered and became hard to determine once more as its displacement came back online.
[The displacer beast is still restrained.]
DM Notes
Wildfire Spirit Summon — DEX save vs DC 15: Fails; the beast takes 6 fire damage.
Flame Spit Attack: Attack roll 18 (at disadvantage) hits; the beast takes 5 fire damage. Displacement is disrupted until the end of the beast’s next turn.
Strength check to break free of Entangle (DC 15, disadvantage): Fails; the beast remains restrained.
The genasi grits her teeth. This beast was both tough and fast. She isn't sure whether to run, and potentially be caught again by the faster beast, or press the attack. She decides on the latter - the vines would break soon enough - hopefully she could do enough damage to force it to flee. She roars as she heats up even further.
"Rgh... RAGGHHH!!!"
She carefully puts herself closer to the beast, fires off a blast of fire, signals her companion to do the same, and then backs off once again.
Movement: 15 ft forward to cast burning hands, 15 ft back after.
Action: Cast Burning Hands at 2nd Level. DC 15 DEX save (at disadvantage) or take 16 fire date, half on success.
BA: Command wildfire beetle to spit flame seed: Attack: 22 Damage: 5 fire damage
Volkanica is attempting to be as intimidating as possible to scare away the displacer beast. Her CHA intimidation check is 10, 15 if it can be a WIS intimidation check. If she sees the displacer beast attempt to turn and run, she'll end concentration on entangle.
She then turns to the other two, "Haluth and Cygnan, "What are your thoughts?"
Trythia listens to Mal and Yunon. She sees no particular need to engage in needless combat but the urge to follow the tug is strong and only growing stronger. And yet, to kill something just because it stood in her way would be far less than honorable. Duty was sometimes a weighty master.
To Mal and Yunon she says, "I prefer to go around. I feel the urge the same as you but it would not be honorable to attack whatever protects the grove just to make our way easier, or for the hope of plunder." Turning to others, she asks, "Haluth, Cygnan, what say you?"
Mal perks up with the mention of plunder, "Sorry did you say plunder? Might there be plunder in there? I never decline the opportunity to plunder but I do see your point. I don't think I want to kill just for the sake of killing....I think....do I....maybe not. Well at this particular moment I don't anyway as I am not feeling all that threatened unless we venture further into the grove. So Trythia, would you mind clearing us a more manageable path around the grove for now with that weapon of yours, and then lets continue to follow this pull we all share."
Haluth - having remained silent for most of the journey finally decides to pipe up in response to the decision of which path to choose, "I'm never one to shy away from a fight, but if the rest of ya folks aren't interested in a fight then I don't quite feel strong enough to take on whatever is in there alone yet." With that, he will follow the rest of the group in what seems like the general plan to go around the grove.
In response to Cygnan's questioning earlier Haluth would have just shrugged and replied, "I've never met any of ya folks befer. As far as threatening to destroy all, I can't say I'd ever had such an inclination. Destruction tends not to bring smiles to the children's faces." He would also decline to share any 'vision' of his own.

“The mark of a successful DM is when you have caused more player deaths with doors than dragons, demons, or devils.”
Gedyr continues to dance with the beast, always moving outside of the attack no matter what the beast does. While he doesn't feel threatened, he is frustrated by not landing a solid blow on the beast. He feels that at one time in his past this beast would not have dared not to attack him or been dealt with quickly. He refocuses his attack.
Cygnan acknowledges Haluth's comment with a nod. "Something seems off here... but we should continue to follow the pull. I have no desire to fight unless it is neccesary".
Yuno does seem a bit annoyed but relents, "Argh... Fine. Let's just go around instead of standing here." She will begin chopping her way around the grove with her twin swords.
The weight of the unseen warning still lingers in the air as you step back from the tangle of thorns and twisted trunks. The oppressive stillness eases slightly with each pace you put between yourselves and the grove’s edge, as though the forest itself exhales in quiet approval of your retreat. The faint scent of wild roses fades into the deeper, cooler smell of moss and damp earth.
Keeping the dark mass of the grove to your right, you work your way into a wide arc, moving carefully to avoid leaving obvious signs of your passage. The ground here is uneven, knotted with roots and littered with fallen branches, but it is passable. You push through patches of undergrowth, duck beneath low-hanging boughs, and weave between massive trees whose trunks are thick enough to hide three people standing shoulder to shoulder.
Now and then you catch glimpses of the grove through gaps in the trees — the same brambled wall, the same unnatural stillness beyond — but it never draws closer. The watchful sensation you felt before fades as you continue, replaced by the normal, living pulse of the High Forest. Birds resume their calls somewhere overhead, and the whisper of wind through the canopy sounds less like words and more like what it is.
After some time, you find your way back to the faint trace of the ranger’s trail, the grove now behind you. The pull within your chest remains unchanged, still guiding you onward, deeper into the forest, and whatever lies at the end of this journey.
You set off once more along the narrow trail, the familiar rhythm of travel returning quickly. But it’s not long before Yuno and Haluth both slow their steps, eyes scanning the forest floor. Just off the trail, partially hidden behind a cluster of ferns, lie the clear signs of a camp — a few flattened patches of grass where a bedroll had been laid and a scattering of boot prints in soft earth.
Whoever camped here left not long ago — an hour at most.
Volkanica
Volkanica stepped forward, heat gathering at her core until it roared outward in a wave of flame. The restrained beast writhed in its bonds, but the vines held long enough for the searing cone of fire to roll across its form. The forest air filled with the crackling hiss of burning vegetation and the sharp scent of singed fur.
High above, her wildfire spirit spun in place before loosing a focused bolt of fire. The projectile cut clean through the gaps in the canopy and slammed into the beast, drawing another snarl of pain. Its image remained perfectly clear under the barrage, the flickering illusion still absent.
The predator, though wounded, remained dangerous. With a surge of raw muscle, it wrenched at the vines binding it. Roots tore and foliage scattered as it broke free, shaking loose the last clinging tendrils. It immediately prowled forward, closing the gap in smooth, silent strides until it stood ten feet away — close enough to strike, but not yet committed to the attack.
As the last fragments of vine fell away, the shimmer of displacement returned, its body flickering and shifting in the air like a mirage.
DM Notes
Volkanica’s Action: Burning Hands (2nd level) — DEX save DC 15 at disadvantage. Beast rolled 7 → fail → 16 fire damage.
Volkanica’s Bonus Action: Wildfire Spirit Flame Seed — attack roll 22 hits → 5 fire damage.
Movement: 20 ft to clear difficult terrain, 20 ft to close to within 10 ft of Volkanica.
Bonus Action: None.
Displacement: Reactivates at the end of the beast’s turn.
Beast’s Current HP: 50 / 82.
Gedyr
Frustration gave way to focus as Gedyr let the Bladesong guide his steps. His footwork tightened, each movement carrying the precision of long-practiced forms. The dire wolf shifted to counter, but this time Gedyr’s blade slipped past its guard in a low, decisive cut. The steel bit into fur and muscle, and the strike carried with it the resonant hum of Booming Blade, leaving an arcane echo clinging to the beast’s frame — ready to detonate if it moved away.
The wolf’s snarl deepened, hot breath curling between bared fangs. Hackles raised, it darted to the side before lunging with brutal force, its massive jaws snapping toward Gedyr’s leg in an attempt to drag him down.
DM Notes
Gedyr’s Action: Booming Blade + melee attack. Attack roll 21 → hit. Damage: 7 slashing. Booming Blade primed for 1d8 thunder damage if the wolf moves willingly before Gedyr’s next turn.
Gedyr’s Bonus Action: Bladesong active from earlier round.
Total Damage Dealt This Round: 7 slashing.
Dire Wolf’s Turn:
Action: Bite attack. Rolled 15 + 5 = 20 → would hit AC 20 or lower. Damage on hit: 2d6 + 3 = 13 piercing, and DC 13 STR save or be knocked prone.
Bonus Action: None.
Movement: Minimal reposition to maintain melee engagement.
Dire Wolf’s Current HP: 19 / 37.
