Meanwhile Jasmine turns to look at the unlabeled book she had picked up before the Divine Sense registered evil in the lower levels. She opens the book to see what it's about.
Once she finds The Second Great Tectonic Collapse, Dasolis quickly snaps it shut again, wishing she hadn't looked through it. It takes her a moment to collect herself, and she decides while she is here to take a longer look at what other books might be available here. She browses for anything that might describe finding your way in the Abyss. If anything, she would focus on general topography or things specific to the upper levels.
Ok there's a book about an ancient layer that has been wandered upon but never truly found on purpose. It was theorized to be somewhere beneath the Driller dens but it's still unknown the exact characteristics of the layer other than being a vast wasteland filled with rifts just small and potent enough to reanimate corpses that had long starved to death with elemental powers. It was said the reason the layer became forgotten to time was one of the ancient Archdemons whose strengths were so great and embodied pure malevolent concepts that they were called the Sevien Monarchs, which later the ancient stories had been adapted to concepts rather than the actual demons they used to be, or at least the author theorized. The author then played out the theory that the Monarch of Gluttony was the reason that that layer had gone to waste and that I had eaten so much of the ancient kingdom that once stood that not even ant remain by the time he was done, and that gorging was the reason that it had died; it consumed too much too fast to stay alive and it starved to death.
Another book talks about the Layers of frost and how the tundric isles were home to many, constantly changing and adapting behemoths. Not even below the ice caps where no vegetation remained was safe, giant chelicerate-like leviathans lay in wait to snag lost drakes beneath the ice and finish them while they attempt to escape from beneath the ice using their screeches to disorientate and stop the prey from being able to think straight. Another talks about the Greater Remorhazes that inhabit the layer who had adapted to be so large that they could take down entire groups of minor drakes in an instant. And the worst predator of them all was said to be the drakes whose molten cores had led them to rain fire from above and below as they tunneled through the ice caps and patrolled from the skies, they other than humans are "the most cooperative animal" and they hunt prey by corralling it and then taking advantage of the creature's weights to break the thin ice bridges and pick the animal off while it drowns which leaves them in constant competition with the Chelicerates.
There's not many on the Drillers nest or the Chasme ant horde, it mostly talks about ancient bugs other than the ants that dug through the surface and slept for hours upon end because of their size. That much is strange because the ants currently seem to be one of the greatest threats known. This book dates back 25 years ago and after flipping through pages at rapid speeds you notice a final almost footnote mention at the end of the book talking about a new species of ant taking over the ancient bugs' tunnels and making new ones slowly and how they seem to be fairly small and harmless but can put things to sleep if in the perimeter for too long and that was how the formicidae terebro or Drillers as their name was dubbed, had kept the giant bugs out of their way.

Meanwhile Jasmine turns to look at the unlabeled book she had picked up before the Divine Sense registered evil in the lower levels. She opens the book to see what it's about.
The book is about several crafting recipes using supplies found in the abyss, some of the recipes seem to be simple and others... others are incredibly powerful like one that can serve as a reality anchor that can warp light and chance into an actual force, or another that can create a shrieking noise upon use that locks all that hear it in a nightmare realm filled with pitch black sludge that slowly attempts to immolate those trapped inside. The book seems to be slightly holy but it also contains recipes that are unholy. Is it possible that the book came from a lower level?

"It has certainly been a while hasn't it Bjorn? It is nice to see you mostly grown up even if you still feel the need to hide your face behind your helmet, even going on to be known as the faceless prodigy back at training. I can tell your stance is still wide just by seeing you once, old habits die hard, and you certainly are going to have a lot to fix throughout the layers. I saw you purchased the relic on your back, Torla's singing blade if I remember it's name right. It was wielded by an incredibly powerful swordswoman who had been known to swap her style and weapon as fast as the light gleaming off of gemstones fades. Hopefully you remember your spear training well enough, or even your polearm and warhammer training, though you could certainly use for forgetting your archery training; you'd probably do better with no knowledge rather than your past 'knowledge'.
It was nice seeing you, albeit just in passing."

In the package there's a smooth polished piece of marble formed in a teardrop shaped engraved with the symbol of a spear. You recognize the symbol to belong to the ancient warrior tribe of the elves that specialized in weaponry and enchantments. There's also another thing contained in the package: a simple amulet with Jade chains and an onyx stone attached to the chains.

Since no one has been paying attention to this book and since it seems like it could be important, Jasmine will hold on to this book for now. She doesn't intend to steal it but she does plan to get some paper and ink and begin copying the contest of the book into pages so she can keep the recipes with her at all times. It could be quite useful. There is time before her first dive so she should have enough time to copy the contents or at least the more important and complex ones she won't be able to memorize by herself.
There's a pretty simple one using chitin plates and direwolf pelts and also some frost-lilies it's said to nigh-on completely negate magic when intercepting it's travel and it's incredibly durable, could that have been the reason direwolves were being hunted because of the magical properties of their pelts. Wasn't that how the unicorn nearly became extinct? In the list of must knows it was said that the direwolf was a neutral species that typically avoided humans or similar prey and weren't actually aggressive by default. Could human activity have changed that, the book seems to be from at least 30 years ago could that have been enough time for that to change?

((Great, now I'm going to have to dig out the crafting list and make sure it's all up to date 😩. I dug my own hole with this so I can't really complain.))

As Dasolis looks through the books, she stops to find a place to sit down. She will get out her notebook and starts to take some notes on the various books. If nobody has stopped her she will try to find a few more then sit down with them to take some notes as well. Perhaps if she can find a more general treatise, she would hold on to that to see if she could read it more thoroughly.

Also Bjorn do you want to read the letter and open the package that was specified to be for you?

Yes, sorry, I didn't see the message where that was in.
