Your day off is spent at the only tavern available: The Good Knight's Sleep. Its three drink limit made it the only tavern Comms recruits were allowed to visit. It stands as a bastion of rest and relaxation for weary recruits, though very few citizens choose to spend their time there. The tavern is buzzing with conversation and friendliness, and there is much rejoicing and celebration for no particular reason. Cadence's music livens up the place even more, and at one point the whole tavern was joined together in song. Eventually though, the night came to an end and you returned to your training grounds.
You wake up the next morning, the day of your first delve. You meet Sergeant Bakh out front, as he instructed. Beside him is a cart drawn by two horses. "Good morning, delvers. Today is an important day, the day of your first dive. For the past six months, you have worked for this very moment and I been your superior and commander every step of the way. Today, however, as we venture into the depths, I want you to see me as your equal. While on the mission, I will have the final word on decisions, but do not be afraid to speak up suggest a course of action. We will have to rely on each other, and less ideas gives us less options for survival. As I said before, I have no information on the cave we will enter. No other delvers have been sent down there before. Our mission, first and foremost, is to recover the artifact at all costs. If one or more of us were to lose their life, the rest should not stop. There will be time to grieve after the mission. Exiting without the artifact is considered treason against the Comms."
He gives you all one good look over and a nod, before turning to the cart and inviting you on board.
Zyrille shivers at the thought of having to leave any of the comrades she's trained with so long behind. She hoped that her, Amaranth's, Cadence's, and Zozzie's limited healing abilities would be enough to keep everyone alive. None of them were specialized in healing, but with four of the group able to do at least some healing, hopefully they can keep everyone alive. {Since we've had 6 months to learn what each other can do, I figure Zyrille would know everyone who could heal.}
Zozzie climbs aboard the cart. He feels as prepared as possible. There is an exhilaration that emanates from him at the thought of finally getting the opportunity to prove himself.
As the Ranger settles in, a raccoon scampers out from his pack, nose twitching and paws searching for snacks. Its black eye-mask accented with silver furred stars betrays its spirit form (Zozzie’s animal companion, summoned the previous day while enjoying the solitude prior to the tavern excursion).
”Stay still Night Watch.” The elf says as he hands the creature some berries.
(OOC: Would Zozzie have been able to create Good Berries the night before in preparation for today’s delve?)
Sergeant Bakh's comment about failing to return without the artifact being considered treason bothered Zbornak a little bit, but she brushed it aside, figuring that the Sergeant must be just as nervous as the rest of them. She hops into the cart, doublechecking her gear and the small, hidden flask of whiskey she managed to smuggle into her equipment pack. Not enough to really get her hammered, but a little nip for courage now and then might be helpful.
He silently mouths the incantation of Healing Word, knowing the others lives could rest in his hands. He is prepared to do whatever it takes to keep them safe and sound.
While they travel on the cart he strums his lyre and sings a hopeful tune of adventure, success, and good fortunes. (Musician feat to give 2 heroic inspirations -- giving to Zozzie and Zbornak)
(OOC: can we create a new DDB campaign so I can see exactly who is active & a player in this campaign lol)
(Zozzie would be able to create the Good Berries the day before)
The cart takes you outside the city and down a path that hadn't seen use in many, many years. Coming to the end of the trail, you find a large opening in the ground. Peering into it, you see a great drop into a cave. Sergeant Bakh climbs down from the cart, and begins setting up a rope to climb down. "Onwards and downwards soldiers," he says to you, before climbing down the rope himself. The air grows thick and musty as you enter the cave. What little light shines in from the outside world is reflected off the gathering of spider webs between stalagmites. At either end of the cavern, are two passageways leading further into the cave.
Zozzie was excited to finally put his skills to the test and prove that he can contribute to a team. After Cadence's song, he also felt empowered, in a small but tangible way. He followed Sergeant Bakh to the rope and waited his turn. Their training had taught him how to climb and descend a rope, and he was at the bottom in short order. (Night Watch not far behind.)
He looked around and wondered if they were in a natural structure or one that was crafted. He pondered at what natural animals they might discover, his thought trying to stay away from conjuring un-natural monsters that might be guarding the artifact they were after.
Zyrille looked down into the pit with a bit of trepidation. Even after all that training, she still wasn't very good at climbing. She considered just flying down, but since she can fly only once a day, she decided she better save that for later. With a sigh, she starts climbing down the rope slowly and carefully.
Once down at the bottom, she could see into the dark passages, but she had worked together with the others long enough to know that not everyone could see in the dark as well as she could. So with a quick "Lumos", she caused the tip of her staff to glow brightly.
{Light cantrip - 20 feet bright light, additional 20 feet dim light. Even though Zyrille has dark vision,, this still helps her since she doesn't have disadvantage on perception checks within 40'. Also Lumos is the command I use to turn on my cellphone's light as a flashlight...}

Zbornak arrives at the bottom and immediately readies her handaxe and dagger. She doesn't want to go swinging a greataxe in a confined space just yet, not until there's really a need to go all in. She'll move quietly up to the passageways, each in turn, trying to figure out if she hears anything moving in the darkness beyond Zyrille's light.
Cadence slides down the rope and lands at the bottom. Cringing slightly at the dirty tunnel around him as Zyrille lights up the path.
oddly enough, Cadence is spotless, his uniform without even a speck… you occasionally hear him muttering and realize he is casting prestidigitation on himself to clean the soil from his clothes and body.

Perception at tunnel 1: 14
Perception at tunnel 2: 14
The first tunnel leads to another chamber, with a small stream of flowing water running through on the side. About 30' up one side of the cavern, you can see another passage leading somewhere else.
The second tunnel leads to a cavern with another passageway branching off of it. Listening closely, you hear whispers coming from the far end of the cavern, but you can't make out what they're saying.
Zbornak, used to being at the front of a line headed into danger, tells the others (quietly) of what she learned. "I'd rather go toward the whispers - last thing I want is an unknown group of sods hearing us in another chamber and sneaking up behind us. Better to find out who's there before we go 'speel unking',"she says, trying the new word she learned at training.

(OOC: Zozzie is comfortable in all positions. He is able to scout ahead, fight on the front line, range from the middle, or guard the rear. I see him mostly floating between scout and range roles however, supporting Zbornak and Amaranth. Perhaps they are the wall pursuers encounter when his stealth fails and he's falling back shouting the running password to friendlies.)
The elf agrees with Zbornak's suggestion of not leaving the group's rear vulnerable. He tries to blend into the shadows and prepares to investigate the voices but holds his position for now. He waits for the group to decide on a course of action...or Sergeant Bakh's orders.

oddly enough, Cadence is spotless, his uniform without even a speck… you occasionally hear him muttering and realize he is casting prestidigitation on himself to clean the soil from his clothes and body.
Zyrelle recognizes the Prestidigitation spell is something she herself casts often, though not as often as Cadence.
