I know a lot of big bads are Necromancers (some of which have turned themselves into a Lich) but as a PC, how viable is a pure Necromancer build?
I mean I want skeletons, zombies, etc. There are plenty of undead monsters depicted in the MM, so I'm wondering how likely it is that you can actually amass a little force of undead to follow you around or protect your home? https://100001****/https://1921681254.mx/
It is not so much power as it is thinking outside the dead box.
Sure, you can go to the local cemetery and raise all the undead... and maybe visit an old battlefield to raise fighting skellies. BUT, why just people? The local woods are filled with the living and the dead... bird, squirrels, deer, etc. You could have a virtual 'security force' of creatures that ... at first glance... might pass as living but are dead /undead. Aerial scouts. Patrolling deer or heck, even cows and sheep.
Undead do not eat, sleep, or get sick. They are ideal for menial labor, construction, or clearing hazardous areas (like trapped dungeons) without risking the party.
Yes, how long they 'unlive' and obey is short at the lower levels but as you gain levels, you gain more skills and longer / permanent undead minions.
Plus, recall.... in adventures, if you play your cards right... every time you kill something... it can become an addition to your collection.
Skeletons are particularly useful for their high AC, ranged attacks, and lack of exhaustion. So, maybe one or two skellies to start the day and you might have a wide selection of minions by midnight.
Necromancy allows the character to fight evil with evil, such as using undead to fight demons or other undead, thereby sparing the lives of innocent soldiers.
Now... if you are NOT going to be Pure Evil on the hoof... you can play a necromancer with 'good intentions'.
The "White" Necromancer: This character studies the boundary between life and death to extend life, heal the sick, or combat disease.
Guardian Archetype: The necromancer may raise the dead specifically to protect vulnerable locations, such as orphanages or villages on the frontier.
Rehabilitation/Repentance: A Lawful Neutral character might raise the dead to force them to complete punishment or undo wrongs they committed in life.
The opportunities are there if you want to explore.
and in a pinch, you might believe you can create 'a perfect being'.... and be like Doctor Frankenstein... gathering pieces and making 'perfect soldiers' or 'perfect <insert type>'
You might fall on the 'bad side' of the medical community (or the general community at large if they find part of their sister or brother showing up in town... but, FOR SCIENCE!
