Quote from Dreamhobbit>>Halp you see the Skald walking past in sombre silence, no hint of a rousing tune has yet left his lips. (With a 22) your eyes drift past him to where rows of bodies have now been laid out further up the beach. At least thirty so far their forms still and silent in the cold afternoon air. It is then that you see her. The girl from last night. She is crouched low over one of the bodies as if whispering in its ear. At the moment you are the only one to notice her.
Halpbreaks off from his duties, nodding at those nearest to carry on.
He walks in the lass' direction, not trying to hide.
If she looks up and sees him he'll raise his hands in greeting. If she sees him and he's within earshot he'll shout, "Lass! Are you doing well this morn?" (OOC: here're insight and persuasion checks in case they're of use - but, of course, only if relevant: Insight: 12 Persuasion: 19)
He doesn't want to scare her, so if she seems at all jumpy, he'll stop where he is.
But, if she doesn't flee, he'll approach to talk, keeping an eye out for Kora as he does. Halp thinks it likely Korawill be less daunting for the lass to speak with than a grizzly old codger such as himself...
Taking a deep breath, the man stepped forward, letting cold silence wash over him. He did not look back as he walked - in truth, this was his resolve. He was alive, that was something he'd strived for. To question it now... perhaps he always would. But his greatest issue was finding purpose in that doubt, as so many others were trying to themselves. And he was certain he would not find it among those alive. He needed to commune with those lost. And so, with heavy, dragging steps to mark his path, Richter wandered towards the waves, and the many silent, waiting forms lying motionless along the water's edge, contemplating purpose.
When Sólmyrkvi notices that Richter has joined the group of workers on the beach, he approaches him and says, "Ah! Join us, sir! I'm sorry that we missed you earlier and did not include you when coordinating this work." As he gets closer, he's a bit taken aback by the haunted look in the gaunt man's eyes. "Um...here! You could work with me. Or...were you planning to give us some music to keep our spirits up as we finish this grim task? You were the one playing the drum by the fire last night, right?" Sólmyrkvi gives him a curious look and asks, "Master...Skald, is it?" He hesitates slightly, thinking that there's something familiar about the man, but he cannot place it. Perhaps the man's face just reminds him of one of the many people he has seen during those last desperate days before they fled their homeland.
Either way Sólmyrkvi you spring into action fashioning the stretchers and soon volunteers start to drift over through the efforts of Halp. The effort takes much of the morning and by the time you go searching for Halp you find him heading back toward you with a small crowd of followers. (With a 22) you persuade several more nearby survivors to join your efforts. Joining Halp to walk back to your makeshift worksite you deliver your words of encouragement and it appears that Halp chose these people wisely as they nod in appreciation of your words. Before getting stuck into the gruelling work you offer your help to Eldon who was tasked with designing the pyre. Eldon roll with advantage on your next roll related to your task. (i.e. a straight roll cancelling your exhaustion).
During the day of work, Sólmyrkvi also strikes up casual conversation with the people whom they have recruited to help gather the bodies. He's trying to learn the names of those who have volunteered to help, especially anyone who both helped gather firewood / supplies last night and are helping gather bodies today. Sólmyrkvi gently asks about their relationship to any of the other survivors (e.g., siblings, children, parents, etc.). Of course, he also allows them to talk about any deceased loved ones if they volunteer such information.
Other than getting to know the others better, his focus is on striking up conversations so that he can find out which ship brought each of them over from their old homeland. It's a casual topic for small talk that all of the survivors share! But, really, he's hoping to find others survivors from the wreck of the Firewing without drawing attention to that fact.
(OOC: @Dreamhobbit - just checking whether any of our group of helpers were passengers on the Firewing.)
With exhaustion, Kora's perception to notice if Leif is staring at her: 13
Kora looks up at Leif a bit surprised.. was he just staring at her? She wasn't sure, well, she knew she looked awful after the fitful night of non-rest, maybe that was it? She found herself growing a bit interested in learning more about this son of Edda. But no.. she didn't need to get herself caught up in that, or anything for that matter. She responds after a beat, "No? Yeah, hopefully someone knows."
As they head down the beach, Kora notices Halp and waves to the old man, then she sees what his focus is and hurries a little faster to catch up with the old man.
Leif is internally embarrassed that he couldn’t identify what animal shed the fur. Maybe his mother had sheltered him too long. While other Druids were out in Nature, he had been mentored to learn a smattering of Arcane and Divine magics. At the time, it seemed like a good idea. But now when their survival depended on craftiness and recognition of the hazards of nature, he found himself lacking. Well, experience is the best teacher his father would always say.
Leif diverts along with Kora as she waves and makes her way to ‘Father’ Halp. He hasn’t noticed the girl amongst the dead yet.
Sólmyrkvi roll for either investigation or persuasion as you discretely ask around seeking passengers or crew from the Firewing.
Halp you call out and (with a 19) her head darts up, eyes wide with fear. She sees you and seems ready to run, but appears to recognise you and for the moment stays put as you walk on. The rest of you notice Halp call out with a perception roll DC 10 or a passive perception of 12 or above. Otherwise you are busy about your work and miss what is happening here.
As you approach the girl you glance around for Kora and do in fact see her returning to the beach with Leif in tow.
Kora you hurry toward Halp and as you approach you see what has his attention. The rat girl is standing near the bodies, to the south of you on the beach. She sees that both you and Halp are walking toward her, with Leif trailing behind and looks ready to run.

Leif finally perceives (passive 15) the rat girl from some distance off and recognizes she is skittish. He instantly stops dead in his tracks to try not and completely overwhelm her. He stoops low to the ground to minimize his size to her perspective, yet high enough to maintain his field of view.
Sólmyrkvi roll for either investigation or persuasion as you discretely ask around seeking passengers or crew from the Firewing.
Note that Sólmyrkvi's goal is to find people from the Firewing, but he's not asking about the Firewing or whether anyone has met someone who came here aboard the Firewing. At least, not yet!
Sólmyrkvi is trying to get to know his fellow survivors better and asks them a little bit about themselves. He just always makes sure to ask about which ship they were on and hopes to stumble upon some more passengers or crew from the Firewing, but he doesn't want anyone to know that he's trying to find Firewing survivors. For now, he's just making casual conversation with the people whom he happens to be working with throughout the day.
For example, Sólmyrkvi's half of a conversation might sound like this: "What's your name?" "Oh! Are you related to Hildriðr Ǫlfundottir?" "Which ship did you come here on?" "Do you know Brynja? I think that she's over there, clearing the pyre site." "No, I was on the Iron Crown. Brynja just mentioned earlier that she also came over on the same ship." "No, I haven't met anyone from the Sunder-Shield yet: I fear that no one survived its foundering." "Your sister's family was on that ship? Oh, that's terrible. I'm so, so sorry."
(OOC: I was thinking of it more like a numbers game. If there were ~500 survivors, and he worked with 20 people throughout the day, he's met ~4% of the survivors. How likely he is to stumble across someone from the Firewing in his conversations will depend on how many Firewing survivors there are among the 500. But for all he knows, the only survivors from the Firewing were the rat-girl and Veldir's gang.) Persuasion: 18
Perception: 18 (for noticing Father Halp and the rat-girl)
Perception: 1 (for noticing Father Halp and the rat-girl)
Nope. Sólmyrkvi is apparently absorbed in his own work and with the people in his immediate area. He's not near the area where the bodies were laid, and he's not looking in that direction when Father Halp spots the girl.
Kora lifts her hands, palms facing the girl as she slowly moves towards her. "Please, I just want to talk."she'll move towards the girl until she can talk to her without shouting over the crashing waves, or if the girl runs, she will chase after her.
If the girl doesn't run..."Hi there, do you remember me? My name is Kora. I was hoping to talk to you around the fire this morning, it's probably safer for you to stay with people then on your own. Why are you out here? Are you looking for something?" she swallows, "or someone? maybe we can help."
Leif you do you best to look unthreatening as you allow Kora and Halp to approach on their own. (Make a persuasion or stealth roll, to see how unthreatening you manage to look).
Kora you approach carefully and speak as calmly as you are able (roll persuasion and make it a straight roll due to the help from Halp, no disadvantage DC 12). Halp do you continue to approach?
Sólmyrkvi (with a 9) you have some interesting conversations throughout the course of the day but none of them reveal information about the Firewing, incidentally or otherwise. (OOC: Completely understand the intent, an appropriate roll was needed to help decide the outcome).
Eldon you consider the options for the ritual burning of so many bodies. A number of options come to mind, the creation of a great burial pit to contain the flames and bury the remains afterward might serve, though a pyre is more traditional. But a pyre for 100 men and women? That would be enormous. What about several smaller pyres? There are also the ships, one could be commandeered, the bodies placed on board and sent to burn amidst the waves? Or burn the ship on land and make of it a burial mound afterward? These are many other ideas flood through your mind as the day passes. Today the dead are gathered and you must decide your plan so that tomorrow all hands will be placed at your disposal to execute it. (OOC: if you are struggling to lock this down pop me a DM and we can talk it through, otherwise its up to Eldon how he executes his command.)
OOC: Lambastard_13 has stepped away for a couple of days and will post on their return. Sólmyrkvi expect a response then :)
Leif makes far more noise in his Scale Mail than he intended to. His shield swung down to his shield arm during his stoop and Leif clumsily equipped it while not breaking sight of the girl.
(OOC: how far away are the trio of rat girl, Kora, and Halp? Contemplating spell ranges.)
The girl is startled by the noise you make Leif but given that you remain around forty feet away and do not seem to be advancing she does not bolt.
Kora your words seem to take a moment to sink in but at last she gives a small nod and answers, "I...I remember you. I was just looking. I am fine." she grows a little defensive, "Why are you collecting the bodies?" she glances suspiciously past you toward Halp.
Sólmyrkvi, Eldon and Richter, by now you will be aware of what is happening and will see Kora taking to the girl. Out of the three only Sól will recognise her.
Kora make a perception check as you get close to the girl in the daylight.
Sólmyrkvi, Eldon and Richter, by now you will be aware of what is happening and will see Kora taking to the girl. Out of the three only Sól will recognise her.
(OOC: @Dreamhobbit - how are we positioned? That is, if the rat-girl just runs, does she have a clear path? Or is the rat-girl between Father Halp and Kora? I'm also hoping that we learn this girl's name so that I can stop referring to her as "rat-girl"!)
Sólmyrkvi is headed back toward the area where the bodies are being laid out when he notices Koraand the "rat-girl." He feels an urge to rush over and help Kora, somehow assuming that any situation would be improved by his assistance, but he doesn't want to attract any more attention to the rat-girl. Since Father Halp and Leifare closer to Kora than he is, and he has already shared what he heard from Veldir, he decides to hang back and just try to keep an eye on the situation while pretending to continue his work.
If any of his "helpers" seem to be headed toward Kora, Sólmyrkvi tries to direct them to spots that are not near Kora or the girl. For example, if someone is bringing a new body to the area, he asks them to start a new row that just happens to be on the opposite side of the existing bodies from where Kora is. He doesn't want to draw any attention to the rat-girl, and he hopes that everyone just assumes that she's another one of the people helping with their work. Or that they're too busy with their own work to notice her. (Sólmyrkvi assumes that the rat-girl wouldn't draw particular attention from anyone who did not see the events on the Firewing, and he hasn't found any other survivors of the Firewing yet.)
If there are no other works nearby or headed toward their area, Sólmyrkvi will try to work his way closer to Kora without drawing attention from the girl. Since he's on an open beach, he's certainly not able to hide. He's just trying to look like he's doing work among the bodies while he happens to get closer to Kora.
Skill checks, if needed:
Deception: 11, in case he needs to direct anyone away from the rat-girl
Stealth: 18, in case it's needed to move closer to Kora without drawing the rat-girl's attention
OOC: @Sólmyrkvi she is on the far side of Kora and Halp to the south of you, at the edge of where the bodies have been laid. You start around 80 feet away. She has a clear path to run away to the south or south west if she wishes, though to the south are sheer cliffs with large rocks at the base. To learn her name someone will need to ask her :)
Sólmyrkvi your instincts are correct and the other workers pay little attention to the conversation happening between Kora and the girl. (With an 11) You manage to quietly divert others away while (with an 18) carefully closing the distance to around sixty feet between yourself and Kora.
Halp know he's not the most charming of folk, he knows that. But he'll do whatever's in his power to help Kora connect with the girl.
He's no longer sure that his intervening the previous eve has any currency in dawn's light. Still, if the girl ever looks in his direction, he'll give her small nods of encouragement of the you-can-trust-her (ie Kora) kind.
Kora looks around to the work people are doing with gathering the bodies and then back to the girl, "Well, we don't want to just leave them to rot do we? We're gathering them and then I think I heard we are going to build a pyre? I'm not sure. I'm glad you're fine, what's your name?"
