Leif you stop by the camp stores, which are currently being managed by a worried looking fellow named Flinch. He is busy counting stocks and piling stores and only half listens as you make your request. At the mention of nuts and acorns he looks up and barks a laugh,
"Does this look like a village market to you boy?" he then turns his back on you making it clear that he is not interested dealing with your request.
Kora (with an 8) you see no acorns as you work.
You all arrive at the beach where Eldon is busy organising the days work. He has etched out plans for five large square pyres, each to be stacked with timber at least four feet in height. Around twenty bodies are to be laid atop each pyre. You all get stuck in as you arrive. Sólmyrkvi as you bring the last of the bodies from the shore Eldon hurries toward you, he also calls over to the rest of you to join him.
Leif you are drawn from your grief by the call of Eldon. (OOC: Add the doll to your inventory as a custom item. It is not magical, but it is a source of love and courage. Once per day you may place your hand upon it outside of combat to gain immediate advantage on a wisdom or wisdom based skill check).
"Where were you all first thing this morning?" Eldon shakes his head and gives you a friendly swat on the shoulder Sólmyrkvi having been the last to arrive earlier, "Never mind, you are here now. The king was here with the dawn and told me he would speak with us all once the days work is done and it is not done. We have two problems."
Eldon raises a single finger, "One! we need oil or it will take all night to get these fires burning." he then raises a second finger, "Two! we need strong smelling herbs to mask the err smell. can you all help with that?"
Halp wants to help Eldon, but he's at a loss. He's not the greatest problem solver, preferring straightforward actions - least ways when he can see what they should be.
He abandoned druidry far too long past to trust his ability to find wild herbs.
He nods to Eldon, "I'll see if there's oil about..."
He starts going from group to fire to gathering to tent to shanty to the king's quartermaster to everyone in between.
If he finds kegs or flasks of oil he'll explain to their owner that Eldon needs them on Kings orders, and what the oil's for. Then he'll ask them to take their oil to Eldon.
He won't be ordering them, really, it'll be more that he just will expect them to do it, then he'll move on to the next group.
He'll return to Eldon when he's either (i) instructed enough people, in his judgement, to take their oil to Eldon, or (ii) he's been to see everyone.

Sólmyrkvisays, "Let me help you with that, Father Halp." He gets Eldon to provide / fabricate large jug for collecting and carrying the oil back to the pyres. He explains, "If we just ask people to take their spare oil to Eldon, half of them will forget to do it. Or they'll convince themselves that they actually need all of it for themselves and someone else will share. We'll gather a lot more if we can collect their spare oil while there talking to them."
As they go from tent to tent, Sólmyrkvi lets Halp explain what they need and why. If the person seems sympathetic to the cause and willing to share, he jumps in to "help." For example, if the person is older, he says, "No need to get up. If you can tell me where your oil is, I can fetch it for you." Or, if they're wavering, he says, "Every little bit helps. Other people didn't have much, but they shared a splash of oil. It's the whole community coming together to show respect for our dead. Really, if everyone could spare just a little oil, we'd probably have enough." He collects when they can gather in the jug and takes it back to Eldon whenever it gets full. (But he never empties it entirely so that he can always shake the jug and make a "sloshing" sound while he's explaining that other community members have already shared their oil.)
Leif tries to remember if in their patrols of the perimeter and visit to the grove there was the likelihood of strong smelling herbs in the vicinity.
”Kora, do you recall if we’ve seen any area nearby where wild herbs might be located? We could explore further inland, but it might be best if we search in a larger group should we stray more than a 15-20 minute walk from camp.”
Kora gives Leif a little smirk, "Afraid of a few squirrels? But no, I was pretty exhausted yesterday, let's go check things out, we'll be fine."
She starts heading towards the edges of camp where she saw the message earlier from the somewhat locals and sees what she can find to help with the smell.
Halp and Sólmyrkvi (with a 15) your efforts are rewarded and you eventually find yourselves back with Eldon as he oversees the distribution of the oil.
Leif and Kora (with a 23) you soon find a large growth of a plant you recognise as "honey weed" it grows next to a small rivulet that runs from the western hills toward the beach. The plant is familiar to you both and you know it to give off a thick sweet smell when burned that will be ideal for Eldon's purpose. You manage to gather a small group of helpers to bring enough of the plant back to the beach to do the job.
You all stand there now watching the final preparations taking place. You watch as the salt-crusted volunteers lift the bodies with care onto the pyres. Skeletal remains of shattered longships and gathered timbers, piles of splintered oars and brine-soaked spear shafts. The gathered oil stands ready to be soaked into layered mounds of dried kelp that surround the base of each pyre. You hope that the flames when lit, will have the strength to bite through the damp. Each of the bodies have been stripped to their undergarments and torn sails have been harvested to act as wraps for hands and faces.
"All appears ready." you all turn to see Merros approaching flanked by two guards. He smiles broadly, "The king would speak with you all before the evening begins. Master Eldon you are of course excused from the audience so that you may complete your preparations."
He knows that he as, at best, a 'lay preacher', cannot be best suited in the whole of this forlorn company to contributing to this ceremony. For the first time seeing the community's need, he thinks, maybe one day... - but for now there will certainly be someone more learned and able to oversee rites of such import.
And, on a practical level, Eldon is doing a worthy job. Sound. Respectful.
No, Halp makes up his mind. He is confident enough he won't be needed. He will go to see the King.
He looks to his companions to see if they too will tend to the King's the request. Then he heads with - or without - them to the King.
Leif will observe long enough to be assured that his mother and sister are placed on the same pyre. Somehow his hand has found the crushed wicker doll in his pocket, but he does not retrieve it. Ultimately, he makes his way to the king’s tent and banner, walking solemnly with the others, maybe a half step slower than the rest.
