Out of the Abyss? Or similar campaign thread.

Hi everyone! I’m looking at running a survival horror style campaign, with the two main options being either Phandelver and Below or Out of the Abyss. I’m looking for about 5 or so players, with one slot already taken. A couple conditions, though!

- Keep it PG-13, no explicit scenes whatsoever. Also, no gruesome murder hobo-ing.

- No discrimination whatsoever. This is a safe space.

- Please keep swearing to a minimum. Damn and hell are fine, otherwise try to not say it.

For character creation, you can use 5 or 5.5e, or a mix. 3rd party/homebrew content I have to look at first. You start at level 2 cause level 1s are squishy and die easily, any generation method other than manual (so no giving yourself all 18s). After modifiers, no stats higher than 18 or lower than 6. Starting equipment and one uncommon magic item of your choice.

Hi LinkArcher!  I am interested in Phandelver & Below, and I actually know Mister_Whisker!  We've played together before.  

I am unfamiliar with Out of the Abyss, but I'm not opposed to learning more about it either.  

I assume both campaigns start at level 1, correct?  Point buy or rolling?  Starting equipment, right?  Just wanting to confirm.

Hello! Now that I have some interest, I'll tell you a couple other things. Would you allow UA? I have an idea to play a Conjuration Wizard with the new 2024 rules but it hasn't been officially published yet.

However, the latest update looks fun. As for which game I would prefer... either really, as I've haven't played them before. I have played the first Phandelver... but hasn't everybody by now, lol.

 Unearthed Arcana? Depends. As for conjuration using 2024 rules, go for it!

Having played about half-way through the old Lost Mine of Phandelver, I don't remember even a whiff of survival horror.  Does the updated Phandelver and Below change that, or are you just planning to add your own spin on the adventure?  

I don't know much about Out of the Abyss, but I believe that it starts with the PCs as captives, which reminds me of the old A4 module.  Fun!

I'd be happy to play with Mister_Whisker and Weathervision again. 

Note: my time is going to be pretty limited for the next 4 - 6 weeks, but if you're kicking off a Play-by-Post game for either of these adventures, I guess we're looking at a multi-year game.  I don't think that I've ever dropped out of any play-by-post games that I've joined here.

Ideally, if I join, I'd be playing a PC who's a bit of a follower and definitely not the party "face."  I have 2 or 3 characters that I could revive for this game:

Option 1 (but only if you're doing Phandelver and Below)

Name: Marten 
Species: Human
Class: Rogue

I played this character in a previous LMoP game that stopped just as we made it to Thundertree.  Marten meant to be a wiry "mountain man" and former army scout.  He's an asset in the wilderness and combat.  He's honest and forthright, but he's terrible at interacting with strangers.  I'd have to look at the updates for Rogues in 2024, but I originally built Marten as a 2014 Scout with Sharpshooter.  

Option 2

Name: Uthal Mountainvigor
Species: Goliath
Class: Barbarian

This one is meant to be a low INT, low CHA barbarian.  He needs to be paired with a friend or partner.  (Think of Fezzik and Inigio, for example.)  You can see him in this play-by-post game that ended before it really got started.

Option 3

Name/Species: Dreet/Dragonborn or Throstlor Redforge/Dwarf
Class: Fighter (Battle Master)

I've been wanting to try a Battle Master for a while now.  :-)  And neither one is going to be happy about being a prisoner of the Drow.

I wanna join, but I need time, I'm at work so I'm a little busy.

 Hi! This sounds fun. I think the overall direction is leaning towards Abyss at the moment, the second half of Phandelver is less survival horror and more cosmic horror. It’s the closest D&D gets to Ctulthu.

Either my Barbarian or Fighter would work for Out of the Abyss.  That'll give the party a tanky front-line melee character.  Oh!  Unless we need a healer more.  I also have a Light Domain cleric that I played in one of @Weathervision's former games, and I could probably revive that character.  I'll probably wait until you've finalized the whole group selected and created an OOC discussion thread so that I can chat with the other players about our PCs.  Since it sounds like we'll be in a "survival horror" story, I'd like to make sure that the party has all of our bases covered!

Option 4

Name: Ixsas
Species: Yuan-Ti
Class: Cleric (Light Domain)

In the original build, Ixsas was a cleric of an uncommon deity -- Kossuth (in a Forgotten Realms game).  Ixsas was abandoned/orphaned and raised at a Temple of Kossuth, which has made him a bit of a zealot: "The Light reveals all!  In each moment the fire rages, it will burn away a hundred veils!"

he second half of Phandelver is less survival horror and more cosmic horror. It’s the closest D&D gets to Ctulthu.
