Charles will run forward with his candle, shouting "God, what is it with you ruffian types today? Looks like you need a good round of shock therapy." and use a Shocking Grasp on the bear, then run back 15 feet.
Mellow's ears perk up when he hears someone shout, 'Bear'.
He rushes forward and presents his shield with the holy symbol and a handful of berries while invoking his deity, Eldath. Mellow holds forth his embossed shield and Channels Divinity: Charm Animals and Plants. The emblem glows with gentle green-gold energies as spectral, blooming vines gently wraps around the bear's broad shoulders, softly glowing with a soothing bioluminescence.
(( WIS vs DC 14 ))
A moment passes as the bear’s raised hackles smooth down, and its heavy, thunderous roar transforms into a deep, quiet rumble.
'Friend or Foe?', Mellow wonders as the spell energies does its work.
Xolan positions himself as close to Katrina as he can he’s shivering and holding his daggers white knuckled ready to help if possible.
Charles electric grasp fails to connect.
However when Mellow gives himself over to the will of Eldath, the bear whimpers and settles to all fours. The berries (from the dryad?) are snuffled in a few chomps and a sad gulp. Mellow can see this bear if growing some ash grey veiny growths in its thick fur…

Mellow breathes a sigh or relief when the bear settles down. BUT, he also knows this 'calm' will not last long, so he quickly casts Animal Friendship after digging a food ration from his pack.
BW3 & BW4 get impatient with the bear and move to rally an attack just as animal friendship takes hold the bear growls deep in its chest as it rears up and grapples the bullywugs both into a bearhug of death they struggle for only a moment and both go still.
Mellow through the power of Eldath has a new friend…

Katarina finds the weird frog-skin coat nearly pressed up against her... well... weird. But she doesn't comment on it too much. Maybe it's a normal practice in these parts to wear the skins of your slain enemies?
"Hello, sling-man!" Katarina says good-naturedly as Xolan positions himself right next to her. "Katarina thinks maybe we should keep moving... Katarina isn't sure if more evil-frogs might come be coming here."

Mellow nods to Charles, "Aye, I was blessed today. This big fella isn't all that bad; he is just in pain from whatever is infecting all in this cavern."
Mellow softly pats the haunch of the bear. "Now if I can figure out a means to reverse the infection and damage..."
"In the meantime, best strip the weapons from those bullywugs and drag their bodies to the side... just in case some random patrol won't stumble upon them."
"I'd like to say I recognise those greyish lines. One of the soldiers of the 42nd got something similar back in the war," Charles notes, continuing with "Poor bear. I feel kind of bad for nearly shocking it. One shouldn't show needless cruelty to something just trying to survive."
-OOC: Can I make an ability check to see if I remember anything else about the infection? I don't have proficiency in any skills that might relate except Perception, so here's just a raw Wisdom roll. 13 (with a +2 bonus if perception applies)

No perception but the 13 is enough of a raw history/survival the only time you ever seen this was on your creator… part of the process of giving you sentience involved a potent slime possessing a psychic trait…
long and short your original creator fought for his life to shake this very same infection.

Charles tells Mellow about the unnamed healer who rebuilt him after he nearly died in the war, and who was fighting the same illness that seems to be affecting this bear. "Come to think of it, the man who saved my life had this very illness. It was potentially a side effect of the stuff he used to reanimate me to manoeuvre this form. Some weird slime that did stuff with the mind. Think it could be related?"
Mellow listens to Charles as he slowly rubs the bear's fur in the non affected spots, checking for any other abnormalities. "It does sound as if we are skirting the edges of what my clerical friends would call 'the unknowable'. "
"I do recall a tale told around a campfire long ago. Beyond the edges of the known map, where the Silverpeaks pierce the sky, lies the Cinderwood — a forest that was never meant to harbor life. It was there, in the suffocating shadows of the whispering hollows, that the vapor called "The Gray Bloom" was born."
"Supposedly, scholars whispered that the infection originated from a dormant, primordial spore-cluster awakened by an unseasonable, weeping blood-moon. When the first corrupted drop of dew touched the earth, the flora revolted. The wood exhaled a luminous, amethyst mist that settled into the lungs of the unwary. What began as a fleeting, euphoric trance quickly hardened into brittle, crystalline veins spreading beneath the skin, robbing its victims of their will and binding their minds to the hive-consciousness of the wood."
Mellow chuckles softly, "Of course, that all sounds more like the sort of tales told around a campfire late at night ... to stir the blood. Myself, I have never heard or read a word of a place called Cinderwood. Nor a vapor that turns blood to crystal."
He takes on last moment to pat the bear's back, "But... I am young and the world is large. I suspect there is much I have yet to encounter or learn of. I will keep your words in mind as we continue, though."
"What say we finish up here and go introduce our furry friend to the others before they start firing off spells or weapons."
Charles responds with "Cinderwood. Sounds vaguely familiar. I think we should give this some thought. Also, we need to name the bear. I propose Sir Clawdius von Bearington."
-OOC: DM, can we please keep the bear? I'll handle all his stats in combat, and we can use the Black bear stat block(which is 1/2 CR) so it's balanced, and maybe even give it a sidekick class(warrior, because it doesn't know any languages) or we can just keep him as a camp pet. But I can't leave him; I'm too attached!
