Everyone else hears the argument, and sees the gnome get hit and carried away.
Unless Soren is translating in real time, Shade doesn't know what the argument is about. Shade hates their Drow captors, but since the garrison at Velkynvelve outnumbers the prisoners, he is not inclined to intervene even if he did have his weapons. He feels that the only viable way out of here requires the Expedition to sneak out, get their gear, and then try to escape the Drow before they're caught. He's sure that he'll get the chance to kill a few Drow on their way out of Velkynvelve, but starting a fight here in the prison cell would be suicide.
But the futility of Turvy's protest / argument with the Drow makes Shade wonder whether the Svirfneblin has really reached a breaking point and chosen death rather than continuing to obey their captors. Or could this protest be part of an escape plan that the pair of Svirfneblin have hatched on their own? As he watches the argument play out, Shade looks between Topsy and Turvy for any sign that this whole scene was staged as a means of escape. Insight: 19 (in game log)
When the second Drow enters and uses a wand to subdue and restrain Turvy, Shade begins to growl quietly, seething with barely-contained rage. He feels that attacking a defenseless and unarmed prisoner is cowardly and unjust, and he glares at the Drow with the wand.
Shade expected Turvy to be whipped or punished in some way for his disobedience, so he's shocked when Jorlan drags the restrained Turvy away and throws him into the chasm below!
*OOC: Apparently the Shoor's wand is not affected our chamber's anti-magic wards? I wonder whether the all Drow magic works in the chamber or whether all magic items work in the chamber.*

*OOC: In D&D, I never assume that anyone is really dead unless the DM shows us the body -- and sometimes not even then! 😉 But I get the point: it was not a staged argument as part of an escape attempt, and these Drow aren't messing around. 💀 *
Find has no idea what is being said but he reflexively clenches his fist at seeing Turvy being killed in such a manner. With a solemn expression he thinks he will cooperate for now, but he will escape. That is a promise to himself.
After witnessing the dispute between the snirfneblin and the drow, and the tragic result Nyskira can't help but wonder how long it will be before despair claims them all.
Nyskira was sure he saw only one drow with the 4 quaggoths and then suddenly out of nowhere there was another one... with that horrible wand... poor Turvy.

*The labour is about a 30 minute walk from Velkynvelve. Actually, you are watching an act of rebellion right now play out…*
Once the prisoners are all outside of the pen, and Jorlan starts to lead the party to the work site, Shade sends a telepathic message to everyone in the telepathic bond:
(telepathy) "Look sharp! If we escape, we'll need a way out of Velkynvelve that's not heavily-guarded. And if you have a chance to take any items that could help our escape -- especially the key to our shackles -- take it!"
For his part, Shade is specifically looking for where the Drow and their Quaggoths stationed on which and where they reside when off-duty. When the Expedition group escapes the pen, he doesn't want to fight through too many guards before they can get away from Velkynvelve. He's also looking around to see whether there are any other non-Drow guards other than the Quaggoths. Perception: 23 (in game log)
"If you know... please be kind enough to tell where the items we once had are being kept," she whispers back to Jorlan in Elvish. "That we might survive our perilous journey through the darkness."

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
