xadian whips around, and then turns back to the room, candle in hand, and cast thurmagy to brighten the candle as well as casting vicious mockery in the general direction of the room if i can now see anyone or anything dangerous within, of not he still says it, without the spell "what a coward, having to hide in the dark" (if can see a creature and it seems threatening it takes: 2 and has disadvantage if it fails the save 13)

As you creep down the stairs and finally enter the basement, you see tables and chairs with mummified bodies in them.

And at the far end of the room you see two giant chests that are eminating cold air.

 xadian approached the chests, wary (prepping dodge, and being attacked at disadvantage) before attempting to open one

 Find out, and the chest remains closed.

As established in post #68, Thorn was following Xadian. He would most certainly follow him into a tavern, and search around for booze (Investigation 9). He sees what closed the door and acts accordingly. If  the door appeared to close by itself, Thorn tries to open it ([ability]Strength[/ability] 4).

Thorn searches for a key or some utensil to use as a lock pick (Investigation 19). Then he tries to open the door. 

OOC: is that a Dexterity check at disadvantage? 12 15

And if that does not work, Thorn smashes the door with the heaviest thing I the room he can swing: Strength 18

Hearing the slam of door and the following crash of the chairs, Broom rushes into the tavern "What happened!" Seeing the smashed chair against the door he turns to Thorn and seeing no immediate threat he begins to relaxe "whats with chair?"
