You know the townsfolk lagged behind as they are not as swift as a horse. Several arrows thud into the doors with militiamen shouting to put their backs into it and to get the bloody door closed.
He casts misty step, appearing just inside the doorway.
Hold the gate here,he says urgently. I can block the gate in an instant if we need it, but there are more refugees who need to get through before the gate closes!
Akkron prepares to create a Wall of Force to block the attackers' clear route to the gates, or, even better, enclose the enemy entirely long enough for the refugees to get into the keep.

Most continued to close the gate but one yells "my wife and kids are still out there. Please lets this being hold the enemy at bay. I can't lose my family" Together they stop with some grabbing their crossbows and firing a few shots of their own as they let Akkron hold the gate for a brief time.
Indeed, the need does come with the enemy gathering to rush the keep.
Akkron intones the words of power, and the militiamen seem confused but soon realize the arrows stopped midair as they were deflected off of something they could not see.
The townsfolk from the temple rush in as fast as their legs can carry them then finally the gates are firmly shut with heavy bars set into place. There is blur of activity inside the keep with triage of the wounded in the dining room and the townsfolk crowded in like a can of sardines though with Milita making sure the corridors are clear as they move about trying to defend this keep.
At the center of hustle and bustle is a man in his 50's barking orders. He looks at Akkron displeased, but beggars can't be choosers. He waves you over "I am governor Nighthill and I lead this town. Tell me what you know of these bastards and the situation as you have seen it"
I know little more than you,Akkron admits, finally letting the grip on his staff loosen by a fraction. I came here to find someone whom I am in correspondence with. A man named Leosin Erlanther, whom I had reason to believe was in this town. I stopped receiving letters from him a time ago, and I came to find what he had gotten himself into. I found the town under siege when I arrived.
His empty eye sockets observe the refugees, looking for signs of the man whom he named.
I just hope he was not in the mill... even I am only one being,Akkron admits. Their numbers alone were nearly enough to overwhelm me.

Governor Nighthill says "I met with the young man Leosin and he came to investigate rumors of the sacking of towns and villages along the Sword Coast. At the time I thought nothing of it beyond a young man's thirst for adventure, but now I know I was very wrong." He raised a finger asking Akkron to wait as he confers with his Castellan. After a moment he returns shaking his head "Leosin is not here in the Keep." Letting out a heavy sigh he then says "Now that you mentioned the mill I do not know if he is there, but I must ask for your aid in securing the grains in the mill. I have a plan where a cadre of my men will serve as a distraction. Which should pull most of the mercs away from the mill. I know they may be paying with their lives but without the grain we will not survive the winter. Once you give the signal, I will have several porters hidden nearby rush to load the carts with grain. Now you may be wondering how you can even get there with the gates closed well this old keep has a secret tunnel that leads out of the back of the keep. Now will you help us?"
I will, Akkron says. How much time do we have? If we have an hour I can recover most of my power. If not, I will need to expend one more spell before we go forth.

The militiamen and porters with their hand carts head out of the secret tunnel that leads to the winding stream to the south of the keep. They rush out into positions as Akkron makes his way to the mill. The porters hide behind nearby houses and soon the sounds of battle can be heard. From a distance Akkron can see many of the mercs leave to fight the militia leaving a few behind.
You can see several mercs have already loaded some of the grain onto their own wagons. In total you see 3 mercs standing 20 ft apart from each other but more could be behind the mill.
Akkron is in Distant Range from the nearest merc not quite in view yet.
Akkron moves a bit closer... just in range for a specific spell... he then casts Circle of Death on the three visible mercenaries. THAT should get their attention... or possibly even kill them outright. Each of the three must make a DC 21 Con save or take 27 Necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. The mercenaries should be out of range for an immediate retaliatory attack.
