"Well, I won't say no. I believe we have a lead. Our pal Whit found a hidden door. Lets get everyone rested up before heading out again, and lets be on the look out for goblins so we aren't ambushed again."

Chalk had been stabilized, but she still wasn't doing great. Her bird eyes were all sunken in from the blood loss, and she could probably convince several people that she was a wight based on her current physical appearance. Renear coming back with the ointment was a stroke of luck.
"Thank you Renear, I would gladly accept this." She quickly rubs a dose of the salve on Chalk. After consideration, she also rubs a dose on herself, she is bleeding a bit more than she thought from that arrow wound.
"We should wait a bit for this salve to work, then we can continue"
Finally calming down and coming to his senses, Odrith sits down next to Kaivius as Chalk starts to stir. "Once again, you are right Kaivius, we all should take a breather."
"Renear, do you think Floon is in any real danger if we aren't rushing? We need a breather, I just don't want to put him in any more danger."
Renaer hesitates, chewing his lip. "Floon's been gone all night, and they think he is me. There's no telling what they are doing to him. I think we can take an hour at most to catch our breath, but we should be quick after. I'm afraid every second we wait could be a second we are too late!"
"Well, looks like a rest is possible Kaivius. Do what you can for everyone. Whit, when Chalk is fully roused both of you should try and figure out where to go next, Renaer has been captive by this group, maybe he can help you all. If anyone needs help I'll do what I can, but I'm better at bashing heads."
Chalk was growing cold. It was hard to tell how long it had been since she'd fallen. Her chest burned with each breathe. Was it really starting to snow? Hmm...yes, definitely snow. She croaks weakly and rolls over to stare up, watching the flakes fall from the sky far above. The ledge was just visible too. "Always pay attention to your surroundings. A misstep could lead to a trail which you are not prepared for." Ilsynoth's voice seems to chastise her. She'd berated Chalk about it often enough. And now it seemed the words were prophetic. What had sheh been trying to do again? She'd been.... going somewhere but where exactly? Odd she wasn't so cold anymore. Hypothermia setting in. And the worst smell.
Eyes crack open and she finds herself back in the sewers being tended to by gentle Kaivius. She shivers, thinking of the fall once more. "Take a breather," Chalk chirps as the issue is brought up. That offending bolt had but whatever the dogutaur had done seemed to have worked wonders. She gives the other woman a reassuring pat. Chalk wouldn't be going into the void just yet.
"Thank you for coming Renaer," perhaps she had misjudged him. Or maybe she was just remembering things wrong since he wasn't there when she'd been knocked out. The man cared about Floon. Not too many would risk themselves otherwise unless they were very foolhardy.
Odrith stands up and stretches. Looks around to everyone and says, "Lets continue on, who knows how long Floon is actually safe for. I'll lead and Whit you stay right behind me and be my eyes. You are the one that was able to detect the ambush and hide and you are the one that found the hidden door. Hopefully you can help us all avoid more taps like that in the future."
Odrith goes to where the hidden door would be, but on the wrong side of the hallway and starts pushing on the wall. "Speaking of hidden doors, how do you think this one opens?"
You look into the dark room, Odrith's torch sending dancing shadows through the door. The door leads into a small hallway that ends in a small set of stairs leading down into a large room. In the middle of the otherwise empty room is a stone pillar carved with a small symbol: a perfect circle with ten equidistant spokes radiating outward from its circumference. In the middle of this circle is a smaller circular indentation that bears a passing resemblance to a lidless eye.
As you enter the room from the North-West corner, you notice 3 other doors: two smaller ones on the North and West walls, and a large set of oak double doors on the East wall. You hear muffled cries of fear and pain and a deep voice laughing and saying something incoherent beyond the set of double doors.
Odrith gives a slight nod to Whit and looks toward the double doors. Brief flashes of the day's trials and many failed attempts at this rescue attempt. Rubbing his chest remembering the most painful part of today, Odrith hopes a repeat isn't about to happen. Odrith feels this might finally be the end of the search. Thinking quick he turns to his group. "Chalk" Odrith says as be pats the pillar. "cover, ranged support; Whit, follow in and ranged cover; Renaer, follow, grab Floon; Kaivius, save us when this inevitably fails. Also, preemptive apology for how much danger this is getting us into."
Odrith charges through the doors, a loud band echoing through the halls. He spots a half orc right in front of him, standing with one foot on top of a redheaded human. Odrith thinks that this has to be Floon, after multiple false alarms, this has to be it. So without looking around any more he take a large, powerful swing with his flail. To hit: 12 Damage: 9 <-- changed this back to before first edit to see if red bar goes away
After the brief distraction his swing buys him Odrith inspects the rest of the room with a quick glance. Odrith charges through the double doors, they burst from the hinges as he hits harder than he expected, and they weren't locked as he assumed. He crashes into the room, seeing a muscular half-orc in dingy robes standing with his foot on the chest of a male human with wavy red-blond hair. Fire burns around the orc’s clenched fist, and his victim cries and squirms helplessly beneath him. Odrith swings his flail with all his might, connecting with the mage's chest, shattering ribs into his lungs. He looks at Odrith, eyes wide with surprise, as a bubble of blood escapes his mouth. He collapses to the floor, dead.
Odrith's companions quickly rush into the room, fanning out and organizing as he instructed, ready to strike. At first they are impressed with his quick kill, but notice his blanched (for a dragonborn) face. They follow his gaze to the top pedestal and feel a collective shudder as the room grows palpably colder.
A nightmarish figure wearing black robes stands up slowly from a seated position, eyeing the heroes with large white eyes. It has rubbery purple skin, with four tentacles encircling its inhuman mouth. It cradles and gently caresses what looks like a disembodied brain with four feet.
Renaer, not paying any heed to the danger in the room, rushes to the man's feet, crying "Floon! are you hurt?!". He falls to the ground, cradling floon's head and rubbing his last bit of salve on the man's exposed, bleeding, and burned chest. Floon's suprised face turns to joy, before he quickly passes out - falling limp in Renaer's strong arms.
A gurgling chuckle comes from the Illithid on the raised platform, and he quickly, yet calmly, starts walking towards the party. He calmly sets his four-legged brain on the ground, and it makes a terrible growling noise. He points a finger at Odrith, and they see his eyes gloss over, and he starts to growl too. He turns to Renaer who his on the ground next to him, and smashes his flail straight into his face. Renaer has a brief look of surprise before he falls to the ground, unconscious - noise and mouth streaming blood.
The Mind Flayer misty steps into the room behind the party, and Chalk sees, from the back of the party, him pull a strange, eye-shaped orb from his robe. A portal opens up and he steps through, the portal closing before the still-dazed kenku has a chance to react.
Odrith, still growling, with a four-legged intellect devourer on his heals, slowly walks towards the party.
Odrith looks around with a mad look in his eye, locking onto the closest living thing to him and charges with a roar. To hit roll: 21 or see below, I think DDB saves dice rolls in order of them happening in post. So if you need to edit in a new roll, put it at the end of doot. Damage: 7

Chalk gulps for effect. She didn't know what that squid face was but she didn't have to know much to know it was dangerous. Especially when Odrith cursed. Oh and then turned around and hit Reaner with a low blow and madness in his eye. And the squid face dropped a brain monster and vanished. "****"
Now the real question was if they could even fight this thing. She didn't want to leave Odrith behind. And she definitely didn't want to let whatever that brain was lose on the city. But she was nearly tapped. Could they take it down without Odrith's help? Her work was very important. She chatters and then throws out a spray of sand. She'd gamble on being able to escape.
Casting sleep on an all in gamble to sleep the brain. Avoiding Odrith entirely. 14
The intellect devourer rushes up to Kaivius and swipes with its surprisingly large claw. It connects across her stomach with a heavy blow to her armor (21 to hit, dealing 5 points of damage). It then somehow stares her down, despite the fact that it has no eyes. Kaivius feels a constricting feeling inside her head, like her brain is about to be wrung like a sopping rag…
Kaivius shakes her head, pushing away the pain and the strange feeling, her eyes starting to burn with an inner fire. These are her charges. This thing has turned one of her dearest friends against his own allies. The pain, the injustice of seeing honorable Odrith reduced to such is enough to make her blood boil. She closes her fiery eyes, chanting strange words and working her arms and fingers in a familiar movement. For the second time in as many hours, the deep tolls of the death knell ring through the sewers as she finishes her spell, pointing at the brain.
It is surrounded by what look to be tiny black flies, and it shrieks with pain, though it isn't obvious how, with no mouth or lungs. At the same moment, a crossbow bolt from Whit barely misses Odrith, who is quickly rushing at him. Odrith brings his flail up for a devastating bash, but Whit's form shimmers and changes to an unsettling grey humanoid. Chalk and Kaivius see an alien-like form where Whit used to be, imposing it's form on the rushing Odrith. The insane Dragonborn hesitates, confused by the change of the creature in his sights. It was exactly what Whit needed - his Lithe form dodges easily away from the Flail, all the strength left from the Dragonborn's arm. Whit thinks to himself that Odrith has lost his touch in his old age.
The bolt hits the brain, yet seems to clang off of some unseen psionic force surrounding it. It took very little damage from the bolt, but it still seems to be hurting badly, for so small a creature.
Meanwhile, behind of all of this still by the doorway, the tiny Kenku, still reeling from her earlier wounds, finishes casting her spell. A last ditch effort - all of her cards in. She releases a tiny bit of sand and clicks her tongue in her beak, her feathers spread out like so many fingers as the casting ends…
The brain stops… it shivers for a second, seeming to fight with all its might whatever magical force Chalk released on it. It takes a step forward, fighting to sink its claws into the wounded Kaivius. It raises a paw, claws outstretched… and falls to the ground sideways, seemingly incapacitated for the moment. Chalk stares in disbelief that the spell actually worked, her shoulders slouched in exhaustion - finally magically spent for the day.

Whit cheers as the brain is seemingly incapacitated, he then looks back at Odrith and the smile quickly vanishes from his face as he sees the anger directed towards him. "Odirth, this isn't you. You protect and shield us. Please come back to us." A moment passes and sees no recognition. Whit steels himself and attempts to run his rapier through the dragonborn's armor. "Maybe some pain will make you come to your senses."
Odrith howls with rage as the rapier slips between the rings of his chain mail digging into is shoulder. The glazed over eyes peer down to the shoulder and quickly snap back up to meet Whit's eyes. The glazed over look starts to fade and Odrith looks down to the blade still in his shoulder. He steps back to remove it and a large spurt of blood squirts out. "Blazes" a soft and surprisingly warm curse slips out of his mouth.
Odrith quickly looks around at the scene, finally taking everything in. He winces as he recognizes the signature 'mark' of flail on face as he looks to Ranaer. He sees the brain on the ground not moving and slowly approaches it. "Is it dead?" he says, readying an attack action for when it moves or when someone else attacks it.(or when someone tells him to kill it)
Odrith stops in his tracks, visibly forcing himself to stop and think about Kaivius's words.
