"Well Chen, how about it? Want to join me in using all of our healing ability for the day on these poor patients and recuperate with a juice and a cookie?"
Ace goes from patient to patient using Cure Wounds and Laying on Hands where he can, always saying something like "Never lose hope!" "Live for tomorrow, TODAY!" or "The greatest wealth is HEALTH!" and posing, especially for the children, who love it, each and every one.
[OOC, I've done a bit of research on the "Hospice of St. Laupsenn" and there isn't much info out there, but what little I found suggested that the patients at this facility are convalescing from an incurable plague they caught during the "Weeping War,"--a demon war. So, the fact that Ace responded with all that good cheer made me laugh. Also, Lucian's suggestion that Chen should go to these clerics to report a suspected demon also made me laugh.]
"See what I mean?" Chen says. "He's just not right. If he's not a demon, maybe he's mad." Long pause. "That's okay."
Chen leaves the temple whenever Ace is done. He starts talking to Ace in that sing-songy style that people use when they are talking down to children. "Ok, come on, Ace. Let's get back to the tavern."
Also, sometime during the downtime, Chen would ask Lucian toggo with him to go visit The Halls of Justice. This would be sometime after Chen got his face tattoo of the Ilmater cords. Whatever procedure they have for petitioners to complain about injustice, Chen would persistently complain about how Caelyn was killed, emphasizing how unjustly she was killed, what good deeds she did, our role in carrying out justice against the person who killed her, but our inability to right the wrong committed by Hal, how Hal is still being allowed to benefit from his wrongdoing given that he ate her soul. He would tell Tyr whatever he knows about The Blackstaff's efforts with Hal, and ask Tyr to bring justice to Hal and to take caelyn's soul away from Hal and give it back to the people of Waterdeep.
Chen would end with pointing out the brand marks on his body, how he has taken on the suffering of his friend Lucian in service to Ilmater, and then say, "whatever you want me to do in order for you to make this right, I will do it."
Lucian would go along, remaining fairly melancholy. After hearing all of this and seeing the brands, he'd respond to Chen...
"I don't know if we can make this right... If we're going to try, let's start by you not branding yourself anymore. Caelyn wouldn't approve."
After a pause Lucian would speak back up...
"I don't really know if the Gods of Justice will see it fit to intervene for her. Caelyn wasn't always an orphanage mom. She was raised by her family to be an interrogator, torturer, and spy, and was extremely good at what she did. She had a reputation for being merciless, cruel and precise.
After a few decades she began to hear a woman's voice calling her away. The voice promised a path peace. It turned out to be Eilistraee, a Drow goddess of kindness. Caelyn fled her former life and arrived in Waterdeep shortly after. She found me a few years later, beaten by guards and left bloodied in the street. She took me in and taught me how to take care of myself the only way she knew how...
I don't know if the good outweighed the bad, but she was trying."
Lucian would lift up his sleeve and show Chen his tattoo... "It's Eilistraee. Maybe She can guide me like she did Caelyn"
Chen would look at the nearest icon of Tyr, and say, I meant what I said." Then, he would turn to Lucian and say," then let's go talk to... Elee-stray? I don't know who that is, but if he can help, let's get help. "
"The tattoo is more of a reminder of Caelyn than a sign of devotion. If Eilistraee feels like intervening then I'll be more than grateful. For now, let's let Blackstaff do her thing."
So, during our long rest outside of the winery, I would assume the party would have some questions, which Ace would happily answer.
She explains that she started out as a member of a traveling troupe of performers: Mr. Marvelous' Magic & Mysteries. They specialized in plays of heroes and the like. Ace played a lot of the background music and did some light foley work. There was no actual Mr. Marvelous, that was just the name of the fictional narrator who set the stage for the stories.
Being apart of a group who shared such stories of valor and bravery was great, but eventually Ace realized she didn't just want to tell those stories, but to make some of her own.
She got her opportunity with a chance encounter with a traveling paladin of some renown. In time, Ace developed a persona, ACE MARVELOUS, as she found she commanded a lot more respect as a giant blustering beefcake than as a frankly kind of spooky soft spoken young woman. Her mentor was... encouraging of Ace in finding her voice, and if ACE MARVELOUS was a way of building confidence, so be it.
She was well on her way to choosing her holy oaths when what should have been a simple diplomacy mission went horribly awry. The king of the land betrayed her master, and something horrible happened. When she awoke she was far from Eberron, and all alone, except for her lute, which had changed. It now spoke to her in her mind and called itself Arma. A pact had been struck, though she could not remember what it had been. Arma, her lute, would transform itself into the shape of any weapon she willed it. It promised it could do even more, in time.
She now seeks to find a way back to Eberron to avenge herself and her mentor, should they still be alive.
In case anyone is wondering why Chen didn't pitch a fit about the revelation that Ace is actually a girl, Chen no longer views Ace's antics as deceptive. He views them as a symptom of Ace's madness. In other words, Ace ain't evil; she be crazy.
We'll get the rooms the tavern came with up and running. so 1200gd there which while bring our valuation to 24. so 800gd left. Do we need the beer engine or beer garden to participate in the upcoming events?)
to Chen when he was rambling about his escape hatch-
"Whoa, Chen, slow down mate. What has got you so worked up man? I know we stepped on some toes in that warehouse and down in that sewer but I don't think we need to start living double lives just yet. Besides if we are going to have a business in this city it would probably be wise to invest some time ensuring the our investment, and thus the city's, safety. I wanted to go down to The Yawning Portal later to talk to those two gents who said they might could get us some work if we joined up with them. They seemed to be much more organized and focused on protecting the city. An escape hatch/tunnel still isn't a bad idea and if you want we can see about some sort of secret door to your room. Once everyone wraps up what they have going on let's all head down to get a drink and talk to those two about some work for us and what all being a member involves."
(OOC to Blake and Josh: I am not sure how the 25% on repairs and stocking works, is that 25% off the initial repairs to the rooms we already have? Just trying to make sure I am on the same page with all this.)
The 25% off applies to the rooms that are just being renovated. So you only pay $900 to get it up and running. You do not have to have any other additions to open the tavern. Any additions from here on out will be at regular price and equal the level at which you paid to have it built. Those additions will add to your tavern's overall value and determine which table you roll on.
Room mods = tavern value
Lif +10, Unseen Servant +10(when completed), Nancy Frostbeard +10( +15 when tavern is selling Split Pea Soup) = mod added to your d100 roll(+30/+35 with soup).
You can also invest in promotions for your tavern(1gd = +1 mod to d100 roll)
If Lucian wants to play at the bar you can gain +1 to the d100 roll for every day he plays.
Or you can hire a bard for the same effect. Not all NPC's are created equal. Some one like Three Strings may lose you money based on his poor playing. I will have you roll and Investigation roll and determine the effectiveness of the NPC accordingly.
There will also be random events that can positively or negatively effect a tenday's profit margin.

The priest looks at Chen dumbfounded but says a phrase and gestures with his hands. " Good news Chen, He's no Demon or Devil for that matter."
"Well Chen, how about it? Want to join me in using all of our healing ability for the day on these poor patients and recuperate with a juice and a cookie?"
"Well, what IS he then???" (Now whispering) "'Cause he's really weird"
The spell doesn't tell me that Chen. He looks human to me.

When they exit...
"I feel like we've really broken through today Chen-sama" Ace opens his arm wide "Bring it in chum!"
Chen punches each of Ace's outstretched hands, as if they were boxing targets. "Yeah!"
Ace is phased for half a moment. He then bursts out in boitserous guffaws
"You're a pure soul Chen-sama! Let's head back to the watchtower!
Its like a buddy cop show now
Yes.
