I'll cast a double fireball on Grem! Kidding. I'll fly up as high as I can and hover over stool. I'll cast ray of frost at the damn thing and try to slow it down. Attack= 15 Damage=7. End turn.
The monstrous creature acts first and takes a precise measurement of the distance it is from each delicious morsel of food it sees. As you see it quickly glance at each of you, a thought passes your mind..."A young humanoid...too frail. A big human...he will do nicely. Oh! a Dwarf! My favorite!"
The eyes of this monstrosity have the following effect:
Confusing Gaze. When a creature starts its turn within 30 feet of the umber hulk and is able to see the umber hulk’s eyes, the umber hulk can magically force it to make a Charisma saving throw, unless the umber hulk is incapacitated. On a failed saving throw, the creature can’t take reactions until the start of its next turn and rolls a d8 to determine what it does during that turn. On a 1 to 4, the creature does nothing. On a 5 or 6, the creature takes no action but uses all its movement to move in a random direction. On a 7 or 8, the creature makes one melee attack against a random creature, or it does nothing if no creature is within reach.
Unless surprised, a creature can avert its eyes to avoid the saving throw at the start of its turn. If the creature does so, it can’t see the umber hulk until the start of its next turn, when it can avert its eyes again. If the creature looks at the umber hulk in the meantime, it must immediately make the save.
It attacks Gremryl with a multi-attack! First comes its claw, critically striking for 13hp! Then its other claw strikes the Paladin for 6 more points of damage! Finally, it's mandible comes down hard to bite, dealing a savage 15 points of damage to Gremryl!
Then, it shrieks loudly...you guess this sound means he's hungry...its eyes look around the room and shift its gaze constantly between Morgana, Leon and Gremryl...waiting for them to look!
Morgana's turn to act! You may choose to avert your gaze or roll a Charisma saving throw!
Morgana looks the creature right in the eyes with her own evil glare and mentally resists the effects of the Umber Hulk's confusing glare! She takes to the air and casts Ray of Frost on the Umber Hulk! The cold starts to freeze the heavily fortified carapace but with a shake of it's back, the monster shrugs off any effect Ray of Frost would have and looks unscathed. It shrieks again...this time possibly out of happiness? It's impossible to tell...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Leon adverts his gaze from the Umber hulk and advances towards it with his duplicity. With his duplicity next to the target he attacks at advantage (so a regular roll now). Leon attacks with his spear.
Gremryl squares up against the towering Umber Hulk. Undaunted by the vicious attacks landed upon him seconds prior to taking action, Gremryl lays into the creature with his own vicious onslaught! Both attacks land and crush the carapace of the Umber Hulk with each blow, further inflicting pain with Divine Smite both times for a total of 38 points of damage! The beast roars with anger and spit comes flying out of its mandibles, mostly caught in Gremryl's beard (or what's left of it).
Leon moves both himself and his duplicity towards the Umber Hulk and comes with 5ft of it. Not knowing where the attack is coming from, the Umber Hulk is at a disadvantage from Leon's attack. Leon, also not quite sure where the creature is due to averting his gaze, is at a disadvantage. Canceling them out, Leon successfully lands his attack and deals 9 points of damage, straight through the monstrosity's carapace! It shrieks in pain...or is it anger?!
The Umber Hulk, now furious that this was not easy prey, launches another multi-attack! This time, at all three targets within melee range. First, attacking Leon's duplicity with its left claw...the claw passes right through the illusion...at first confusing the creature but then it disregards the oddity and attacks the real Leon! The Cleric was ready for its attack and manages to successfully dodge the incoming claw. Turning towards the Dwarf now, the Umber Hulk attempts to bite down hard again to taste the Dwarven flesh...Gremryl isn't able to deflect this attack and falls prey to the horrifying creature's deadly mandible attack dealing a life-threatening 14 points of damage! This causes the Paladin to lose too much blood and fall unconscious to the floor.
With its first meal ready to be eaten, the Umber Hulk lets out a blood-curdling shriek and turns its focus towards the still standing meals...Morgana is up next!
First, I'm gonna have my mage hand hover in front of my face at an appropriate range between me and the creature and in such a manner as to make it so that I cannot make direct eye contact with the creature while still seeing the rest of its body. I'll then communicate the following to the group: "We are in over our heads here. Here's my plan. We need to get Grem on his feet and get moving, now! The closest exit to where Grem is is where the creature came out. That's r exit strategy. I'll get him up and moving, everybody evacuate through the tunnel. If you don't like that idea, speak now or forever hold your piece. Stool, stay as close as you can to me or Leon." I'll use 20 feet of my movement to swoop down and administer a potion of healing to Grem. I'll then use the last ten feet of my movement to get into the tunnel that was created by the creature and set up a defensive position from which to cover the rest of the party.
Stool tries to stay as close to Morgana as possible and stops releasing its Rapport spores to try Friendship spores and buy them some time. The Umber Hulk, while not particularly strong at resisting magical effects, does manage to resist the effects of Stool's Friendship spores and still regards everyone as hostile.
Leon for his bonus action with activate Boots of Speed causing any attack of opportunity on him to be at disadvantage and moving his speed up to 60ft for the next 10 minutes. Leon adverts his gaze and attacks the Umber Hulk with the help of his duplicity for advantage/straight roll Attack: 24 Damage: 5 Leon moves towards and into the tunnel his full 60 foot movement while picking up Stool along the way and carrying Stool with Leon away from the Umber Hulk.
Taking the damage from both Gremryl and Leon, the Umber Hulk attempts to lash out at Leon, only connecting with his final mandible bite attack after the first two swipes with its claws miss. Leon takes 12 points of damage as he makes his escape. The Umber Hulk begins to move towards the group as they attempt to flee. There's a larger rumbling that's heard by all...this time, it's as if the entire cave system were shaking!
