" I am curious, any idea who, or what, intervened on our behalf in the road back there?"
"The message mentioned that members of the Watchful Guild and allies in the Greensville area would try to weaken the enemy."
Isk thinks back, and remembers that the tall lady said, "I and my friends will interfere with any skulkers we come across, but we can't be everywhere."

Reverie Forestgleam—Human Paladin Level 5 in Frontier City of Nunkreet Extremely busy and busy as ever recently, but I will trying to catch up as much as I can
Bommie smiles at Jack's quip and Trimyrai's storytelling. She is busy the first 2 days, but promises to have a discussion with the party after your training is finished. (Trim's question about the slavers is delayed for that time.)
Your party is exhausted, with having a full day of class training immediately after a full night's horse riding. But you can already feel yourselves getting stronger, and after a good meal and a night's sleep, you will be refreshed for day two of training.
There are other people entering and leaving the compound: traders, adventurers, travelers, etc. They are gathered in groups, at which time a WG paladin uses Divine Sense to check for any fiends or undead. (There are magics that can block Divine Sense, but they are checking for magics as well.) One time that your group was nearby, the WG paladin gave Isk and Trim the stink eye, but the guy relaxed after noticing their heritage was aasimar and tiefling (and not full-blown celestial and fiend).
A pair of bloodhounds are sitting near the main hall. They sniff the newcomers that are going to the greeting room, and give a friendly whine to your party when you go to the dining room.
(OOC: In case it comes up, I'm not using firearms in this campaign. For all the weird stuff going on, sticking with swords & sorcery.)

(I want Reverie to pat the bloodhound, but I have to roll for animal handling, right?)

(I want Reverie to pat the bloodhound, but I have to roll for animal handling, right?)
The bloodhounds sniff Reverie's hand, and then lick it. They push against Reverie in a friendly manner. Without proficiency in the animal handling skill, Reverie suspects they want to be patted... But they might also want a treat to eat... Or maybe they need to be walked? (Not sure. But for dogs she barely knows, patting seems safest.)
Part of Jack's swordplay on the first day was to hack at Trim's new arrow, over and over again. Not out of anger, but to be certain that the arrow truly is unbreakable. (It is.)

It is the evening of the 6th of Winter Firstmoon. After a grueling 3 days of training, you feel stronger and more focused in your fighting techniques. You are in the dining hall, enjoying the food and drinks. When you entered, a few snowflakes were coming down, the first natural snow that you've seen this winter.
You are about to some serious (alcoholic) refreshments, when you hear the angry barking of the bloodhounds near the main gate. Iskander summons his glaive from the darkness, and you feel the weapon sending you the wordless warnings of danger nearby.
You exit the dining hall, and look west towards the main gate. There are 5 travelers inside the gate. (Since they were admitted, the paladin has already checked that they are not fiend or undead.) The dogs are reacting to a large hunched over figure carrying a large backpack. The figure casts off its cloak and (fake) backpack, to reveal that it was a disguised Troll. One of the guards manages to lock the front gates, but the Troll has knocked all the guards unconscious. The other 4 travelers react in terror, running in all directions.
You hear warning horns, but they are coming from all around the compound. If there are attacks at other locations, help for the front gates may be delayed.

The buildings and the trees will block sighting for ranged attacks and spells, and are potential cover.
The Troll has acted this round (knocked out the regular guards). It is eyeing the main gates, which were locked. (You remember from your monster studies that the rubbery hide of a Troll will regenerate unless it is damaged by fire or corrosives.)
Combat has begun. The party members are up. You can act in any order, and talk to each other to coordinate actions.

Jack clutches his drums and faces the party. “Let me try this. If this doesn’t work, get in there and hit it with Fire or Acid, unless you can do so from range.” He generates a Drumbeat and talks to the Troll, staying where he is. “Let me Suggest something. I recommend you walk as far away from here as possible and cease your attack at once, or you might not like what happens. You got that?”
(DC 14 wisdom save or do that, I think.)
If this shows no sense of working, Jack’s attempt Inspires Reverie, and he moves up as close as he can to the Troll.
(Yes, you just finished the last training session, and have all your normal combat equipment. Your party is staying in one of the guest buildings along that north wall, but stopped by the dining hall first.)

Isk runs towards the guest houses to get a better angle on the troll (10 feet north) and then along side them (20 feet west). He unleashes a spear of green light towards the monster as dark energy begins grasping at the troll.
(The spell is broken if anyone damages the Troll, so I'm assuming Jack's action will go after Froskan and Reverie have posted.
The spell range is 30', and the Troll is 60' away. A full move will get Jack just close enough.
Normally Trolls only understand Giantish. But with the Troll sneaking into the compound, this one would have to know Common, and can understand Jack's suggestion. Keep that in mind if you encounter any other trolls in the future.)

(I'm letting everyone get their attacks in, then Jack casts his spell. The troll's action at the beginning of round 2 will tell you if it worked or not.
Keep in mind, even if the spell works, you guys might want to continue attacking the 2nd round, if the troll is close enough to death. The troll would walk south for a minute, then reach the south wall, getting as far away from the main gate as possible. This will complete the Suggestion, and the troll can go back to rampaging as normal.)
