Lifting his pack to his shoulders and shuddering with the stiffness in his arm, Lumin asks the group, "Well, you guys ready to go? John suggested checking the town for survivors...should we do that or head down the road?"
Stan grumbles, "The survivors will need to play through the hand they were dealt by Fate. As for us, we have an open road. I suggest we get to moving down it."
It is now about 1:00 in the afternoon, and the sun shines a cold light over the forest. A chill breeze whips in from the north, biting through your cloaks.
the surrounding area is virtually uninhabited. Fifty miles to the north lies the great city of Winterfall, a heavily fortified city manned by a veteran militia. Thousands of refugees from the outlying towns have sought shelter behind it's strong walls. Scattered towns and hamlets can be found south of the forest you currently traverse, a good two days trek through the dark woods. To the west lies the Endless Ocean and far to the east the majestic Lonely Mountains, and beyond that the glory of civilization.
"Yeah, I think Winterfell will be fine. We should warn them about the fish things," Leo said as he packed up his bedroll. He winced a bit as he hoisted his bag onto his back. "I'd like to go back for survivors, but I'm not going to try and put us all in danger to save someone who isn't there."
"Well, it looks like we're heading off toward Winterfall. As Sister Annelise would say when she washed laundry, 'Lumin, you gotta look to where you point your socks.' Her way of saying keep an eye forward and walk carefully, so if you guys want, I can scout ahead with someone if you like. I think we should keep anyone injured or recovering in the center of the party though."
Lumin says all this as he adjusts the left strap on his pack and pivots his feet toward the road to Winterfall, looking back to be sure the group all appears ready to be on the move.
