Party vs. gibbering eye monster Round 1 DECLARATION phase
Map:
Sitrep: The party has cautiously advanced towards the room, strange commentary running through their heads, and they see in the far darkness, a nightmare creature, floating above the ground, with a large, glaring eye, sharp teeth, and waving tentacles with eyes on the end.
Drusk - AC 18 - 10/10 hp Hildigrim - AC 14 - 6/9 hp Jorin - AC 17 - 12/12 hp Pascal - AC 14 - 10/10 hp Vanja - AC 12 - 10/10 hp Gibbering eye monster - not visibly injured
Monsters declare! The eye thing is floating menacingly towards the pile of crap in the room, eyestalks waving, but it is not seeming to charge or be outwardly hostile (well, except for the threats in your head).
Next: Everyone please declare. Special note: I need an additional 1d20 roll from each of you, each round during this combat. As a quick reminder, that means you tell me what your character intends to do in the next six seconds, you roll for those actions, and you also give me an initiative roll, just in case. Then I resolve it (cinematically!).
Declare Delay or as many of Action, Move, Bonus Action and/or Reaction as you want
Roll initiative
Roll for your declared actions (to hit, damage, etc.) if any
Jorin sees the thing floating in the room and believes it to be the creature speaking to his mind. "You want my shiney axe, do you?" He snarls, "It just so happens that I am in a giving mood!"
Jorin charges into the room (looks like 30' is just enough) and attacks with his battleaxe once before whirling around to bring the blade of the offhand axe in as well.
When Jorin starts charging into the room, Drusk will follow a little behind, then step left (4 squares left, 1 down) to get a target on this thing for a Sacred Flame. DEX save DC 12 or take 3 radiant damage.
“What a coincidence, l’oiel, so have I! Never tried whatever you are though. I’m sure you’ll make a nice gumbo or something.”It would seem Pascal also got a voice in his head.
Initiative: 19
Pascal is going to throw a fire bolt! Attack: 7 Damage: 7 fire damage.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Hildigrim seems lost in thought, finally asking aloud, "100 years? Oh! We're attacking," he says in response to Jorin's charge, coming out of his solitary pondering. He draws an arrow and wields his bow, firing at the strange creature from a safe distance.
(OOC: NeoMagus has been offline for 2 days, which we were warned might happen... I'm fine with Mingofaust making the Init roll and action for Vanja this round. I'd suggest that she would move 20' west, allowing her to do a ranged attack with Produce Flame. )

Party vs. gibbering eye monster Round 1 RESOLUTION phase
Starting map:
Resolution:
As the party cautiously approaches the room, Jorin takes the lead. Just as the floating eye creature comes into view, Jorin shakes his head, then snarls, "You want my shiney axe, do you? It just so happens that I am in a giving mood!" Surprising everyone, he charges right up to the creature, using his momentum to power a slashing blow with his first axe (22), spraying dark green ichor (7 dmg), then spinning to bring the second axe to bear, misjudging the angle and slicing through empty air (10).
Everyone blinks a moment, then rushes to action, Drusk and Vanja moving forward, Pascal and Hildigrim staying back.
The creature strikes the spinning Jorin with a magical beam from one eye, but he just shakes it off (Save 16). As Drusk charges into the room, it strikes him with another beam, and he fights through it to no effect (Save 16), as Pascal talks about food and lets a streaking bolt of fire loose into the room. It strikes the far wall (7), splashing impressively but harmlessly just as Drusk calls on the cleansing fire of Lliira. A shaft of radiant flame engulfs the creature (fail save 4), causing it to grunt (3 dmg) and eye him balefully with one stalk. Vanja steps up and with a snap produces a ball of flame, which she hurls (7) harmlessly at the back wall.
Finally, Hildigirm blinks, "Oh! We're attacking." He draws his bow and lets fly (17) hitting the distracted thing and burying the arrow deep (13 dmg)!
Next: Everyone has acted, so I'll post the Round 2 declaration phase next. You should wait cause there'll be a new map.
Notes: So, Jorin managed to surprise everyone (unexpected and 22 initiative), as the party and the monster were implicitly Delaying to see what happened. He declared and acted, then everyone else got to declare and act in the round. The monster struck at the two immediate threats, Jorin and the rushing Drusk, and both saved well, then y'all hit it a lot.

Sitrep: Jorin is locked in combat with the floating eye thing with the sharp teeth—which appears quite wounded—while everyone else is arrayed at various distances. Starting map:
Resolution:
The creature closes with Jorin, spit flying as it grunts out some guttural language and gnashes its teeth, but it is blasted back as Pascal dashes ahead and hurls another firebolt (20), flames scorching its slimy hide (9 dmg). It reels away, and Jorin flashes into action, flanking it to the north, one axe swinging with a mighty blow (19), sending green blood flying (6 dmg). The creature looks up at him with one giant malevolent eye as the northerner brings his second axe in an overhand cut straight into the glaring orb (19), smashing it into the ground (6 dmg).
Drusk rushes up with Joybringer, Hildigrim flanks with his bow at the ready, and Vanja steps in with a hand full of fire, but none of it is needed.
With a sucking slurp, Jorin pulls his axe out of the dead thing.
Next: Combat is over, back to RP.
Notes: This is when contested initiative becomes important, and I used it this round. The Spectator was going to die, given the rolls you guys were making, but it mattered if it got a shot off first. But with Pascal's initiative roll of 20, and Jorin's 19, they both got their simultaneous attacks in just before the Spectator, who rolled an 18. If Pascal had needed to take a longer action, like a long move, [edit] and a spell that was more complicated than a cantrip, I might have entertained using some speed factor adjustments. But Jorin was in its face, Pascal beat the Spectator by 2, and it was badly wounded, and well, you guys overwhelmed it. Well done!
(OOC: Too bad that wasn't the DM-inspired-roll for your off-hand attack. 10 -> probably a miss, 16+5 = 21 -> a hit )
