The paper is written in a straightforward and no-nonsense fashion. By signing the paper you are pledging to defend Atlas by all threats, monstrous and otherwise, which stand in opposition to civilization. In return you will be recognized as official members of the Adventurers Guild.
Landrae signs the paper in a flowing, elegant pen. "I do hereby declare that I shall defend the land from all threats, musical, lyrical, and of the less offensive man-eating monstrosity!"
Kai holds back, not convinced. "And what shall happen when civilization comes into conflict with nature? With the spirits and the creatures who share this world? Other than my companions, I have seen little to recommend this civilization of towns, cities, summoners of the unnatural and those that turn against their own kind. The deer does not slaughter the doe so it can have the greener grass. The mountain lion does not fight another for territory out of greed but need for food. No, I am not convinced."
"Untamed beasts be never aggressors, but can be distressed by greater threats. Either way, many good shaman never swear to a chieftain yet their advice be valued as highly as of those who swear by blood or bond. So sign or not, I still stand by you."
“Kai my friend, be sure that we would never harm a beast just because it’s not civilized. I may be a city dweller, but I stand by your side on these matters. On that you have my word. You do not have to sign anything you don’t want to.”
"Hah, you need not worry Kai, for the contract only says that you will defend civilization against threats. There appears to be no mention of who certifies something as a threat, or issues should you stand opposed to civilization because it encroaches on the natural world. I believe that is what we call free will, and the ability to determine good from evil based on your own perception of such things." Landrae stares pointedly at Jeb, "Heros are only folk who did what they felt needed to be done, despite all else."
Jeb stamps the paper with his seal. "I fear that all is not well at Castle Conwe. The castle is all but deserted save for Lord Nethercrown, his daughter Lyrissa, and a few loyal servants."
Elber nearly steps forward at this, but he stops himself from letting go of Landrae's unstable chair. "Then we be in a hurry! Tell us all that be known!"
Jeb retrieves a pipe and begisn to stuff it with some unidentifiable leaf. "I hope you don't mind." He says. "I do enjoy a smoke." He takes several puffs before continuing. "Castle Conwe is an ancient keep, built centuries ago by Nethercrowns' fathers fathers fathers uncle. He inherited it from his late father, who was poisoned by a political opponent about five years ago. Only a month later Nethercrown's wife died of the Plague. They say it broke him. He locked himself up in his chambers, admitting only his daughter, Lyrissa. The family sunk deep into debt and had to release almost all of the staff, save for a cook and an old butler who refuses to leave." Jeb concludes his tale and takes a long draw on his pipe.
Jeb takes another draw on his pipe. "It's been rumored for years that the castle is... haunted, for lack of a better term. The servants whisper that Lord Nethercrown talks to himself when he is alone. When they question him, all he replies is that he is talking to his father. "

Elber nods and also signs, not at all elegant but still legible. "Like my elders before me, I be a wall against our enemies."

Duncan will sign asking "so where is the feast hall? And where's the next foe?"

Jack signs the paper, reluctantly. “Why would this need to be signed? What purpose does this have above and beyond a person’s word.”

“Saving a princess? Hmmm, I might just get used to this hero business after all.”
"Aye, let us hear this tale of damsels in distress, but also of the journey we would face. For travel can be more dangerous than the destiation."
