The hole in the ceiling is narrow and it appears fairly smooth. You can see about 10 ft or so up, but then it is just darkness, so there is no way to tell how far up it goes. The pile of garbage seems to have layers, the bottom fairly old and rotting and the top of the pile seeming to have fresher refuse.
Wagner: Strength check if you are attempting to climb.
Mulligan: The wolves have nothing of value on them.
OCC: I like the idea of trying to smoke out whats above. They should send people to investigate and we can ambush. Will a Fire Bolt ignite the garbage?
((Boosting is fine - if you do that, whoever is going up can roll Athletics with advantage. You can also set the refuse pile on fire, but perhaps not while one of the party is going up? ))
As the party continues to peer up into the hole, you realize that it goes at least 30 ft straight up.
((After that, let's stealthily scout the cave to see if we need to even smoke them out. Use it as a plan B. We still have the element of surprise as far as we know))
While they climb, Kyanite will cast Minor Illusion over the dead wolves to make it appear they are sleeping and take a covered position to watch the tunnel mouth. To hide his nervousness, he begins to sing/mumble to himself Gnomish, "hän oli sokeutunut valon takana, kääritty kuin kaksi-ikäinen rolloer yöllä ..."
Wagner: The climb is a bit more difficult than you anticipated, but with Ajax's help, you manage to make it about 15 ft up. It looks like the shaft continues up for another 15 ft or so. As you are looking up, the faint light from the top is suddenly blocked out and something wet and slimy lands on you with a wet plop, the stench in the confined space almost gagging you.
Anyone near the steps make a perception check, please.
Odo Will lean back and 'pssst' the others and motion toward the entrance. He'll withhold his action to surprise attack the first goblin that comes around the corner.
Mulligan will check the wolves, keeping an eye out for any symbols or trinkets.

((Is there some way I could give one of our little ones a boost up into the space?))

What do you do?
((Wagner should roll for climbing))

OOC: Well we know something is up there, we better hurry, so no one investigates why the wolves are silent

Ajax is willing to help for Wagner to climb
((Wagner can roll with advantage, at least for the first feet while assisted by Ajax)

Odo: Keeping watch near the door, you hear a faint noise in the outside passage. It sounds vaguely like the gibberish Groob was using.
Odo Will lean back and 'pssst' the others and motion toward the entrance. He'll withhold his action to surprise attack the first goblin that comes around the corner.
Mulligan moves forward a little but hangs back toward the rear - just trying not to make some ridiculous huge noise and tip off the goblins.
Wagner, anxious to get out of the confined space and clean off, does an old circus maneuver to fall safely and silently.

Wagner drops out of the shaft nimbly and quietly, covered in what looks like rotten meat scraps.
Odo and Mulligan move closer to the door. The noise in the hallway gets louder, as whatever it is gets closer.
