Khial's ears twitch to the sound of the coins in the sack. He approaches the large sack and reaches in to take just a handful of coins.
He turns to his companions, "I have an idea: Perhaps we could use the Greypeak Mountain tribes to our advantage. I could disguise myself as this Captain Dar, then convince and pay these mercenaries to launch a mutiny against the Chill...." But he suddenly stops his train of thought, "But I don't seem to have a disguise kit with me."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Xel moves towards Khial whose hand is still in the sack.
Xel matter of factly explains: "We should make an inventory of what we have found in order to make a proper division. Though it would seem the our benefactor has taken his share already."
OOC: If the Detect Magic Spell is still up, Xel checks to see what items from the chest are magical as well as their type of magic.
Xel would like to know how much and type of coinage is in the sack.
As Xel makes the inventory he tells Khial: " I am not so sure if diplomacy and deception is our best option in this case. I wonder why Captain Dar was unable to piece the magical defenses. Surely the Cult of the Dragon would not want to kill the very mercenary their are trying to use."
Xel continues "And we should act quickly since there maybe members of the Chill Company who will be investigating the disappearance of their members or members of the Cult of the Dragon who will be investigating why the Chill Company did not fulfill their part of the deal. There also remains the nagging feeling we are being watched or observed."
Xel also silently wonders: "And how can we be so sure Captain Dar is dead."
After making the inventory, he would like to examine the map to determine how many more caches there are as well as the location of each in relation to their current position.
Xel hands the wooden box to Khial. He asks: "Khial, can you see if you can open this so we check if there is anything of worth inside. And maybe after check the chest to see if there are no hidden drawers for any additional items."
He asks HDP: "Almost all the items in the chest make sense except for that lute. Its presence in the chest was not a surprise to you."
Epos supposes everyone is preoccupied with the treasure, and isn't surprised that he is being conveniently ignored. He sits beneath one of the trees to meditate.
OOC: Guys - I'll be unavailable for quite a bit - I'll be back 3rd May, so my responses will come few and far between, in case this bogs the group down, @Mike F - please play Epos for me :-)
OOC: Just getting back into the groove of things after the Holy Week break, but I'll keep it slow until Tristan gets back.
Khial, being an expert at this kind of thing, quickly determines there is 500 gold pieces within the sack. (Epos and Xel might think he's guessing, but a later accountig will reveal that Khial got the exact number -- this is his business, after all.)
The inside of the box is covered with thick purple velvet; pressed into the velvet are ten vials, each filled with a clear liquid. The shaking the box underwent earlier caused one of the vials to crack slightly; its contents have spilled onto the velvet covering, staining it black.
"Very perceptive," the Herr Doktor Professor answers Xel. "This magical lute was taken from the faction I represent, and now I must return it to them.
"I claim the lute as my share of the treasure, and renounce any claim to the rest. It looks like you have a map showing the other caches of the Cult. I wish you luck if you decide to look for them. If they are as richly-provisioned as this one (those appear to be healing potions in the box, by the way), you will find yourselves wealthy men at the end of such a task. The faction I represent would not be displeased to see the Cult's resources plundered and its plans for the Sword Coast put in disarray.
"But, for now, this is where we must part ways."
He reaches into a pocket of his greatcoat, and pulls out a silver harp pin. He hands it to Xel.
"A token," he says, "that you may exchange for a favor from Those Who Harp."
With a bow, the Herr Doktor Professor takes his leave and disappears down the trail.
Xel silently watches HDP leave. While it will be ore difficult to proceed without the help of HDP, he has to proceed ahead if he will achieve his own goals. A thief. A monk. A wizard. Not the most imposing force given the task at hand. But if the cache which our collective effort is any proof, there is still much to be gained to search the remaining hidden caches on the map. But with all things, there are dangers. This group will need to gather more members if we are to survive.
The sun is beginning to set. Before the light begins to fade, Xel catches a glimpse of a small boat on the small lake to the south and east of the grove (the lake is adjacent to the path east of the grove). He notices that the boat appears to be occupied, but he cannot make out any details of the occupants unless he walks closer to the lakeshore (P19). It appears that the boat is not moving; if Xel had to guess, he suspects it's probably anchored to the lake bottom.
OOC: What does the party want to do now? Do you want to set up camp? I recall that you've already rolled your Hit Dice during a short rest; if you want regain spells and hit points, you need to be able to take a long rest.
OOC: I'll go with the majority but I would like to take a long rest to get back my spells and hit points.
Xel, with some weariness in his voice, informs the party of the boat, its occupant and its proximity to them.
"It could be nothing. It could be something. The passenger may know more about those who set up this elaborate trap. But I think we should rest for now. Especially with the departure of our bardic companion, we no longer have access to his healing magics. But if you believe we should strike while the proverbial iron is hot, I still have some energy in me."
OOC: It looks like you plan to take a long rest. Will there be watches? If yes, who will be taking first watch, second watch, etc? Are you setting up a campfire? The non-elven party members will need it to see in the dark, but that also means you will be visible to any watchers out there.
