Jorin eyes the carnage on the ground and see the reference to the mirror in the journal. He glances over to the intact mirror and then says, "The others were all broken..." before swining his axe into it, attempting to shatter it.

Hildigrim asks for and receives the journal from Quillary. He is rereading the readable when Jorin causes him to look up by saying, "The others were all broken ..." The human then swings his axe.
"Wait!" the halfling yells, holding out a hand as if to stop the inevitable.
The mirror shatters.
As the group looks at the new mess of broken glass, Jorin remarks, "I, uh, am not sure what I expected ... but it was more than that."
Hildigrim's shoulders slump. "I'd appreciate the chance to contribute to any decision involving the destruction of possible clues," he says with a bit of a whine in his voice. He sighs, drops the journal back onto the floor, and begins looking around rather half-heartedly for anything more of interest.
Hildigrim does not find anything more. (Neither does Pascal.)
To cheer up Hilidigrim, Drusk gives him the hand mirror (keeping an eye on Jorin's axe while doing so).

Jorin casts his eyes down towards his feet saying, "I am sorry, Hildi. It has just been so long since I swung an axe into something. I will be more careful."
He will help Hildigrim look around for more, non-destroyed clues.
Hildigrim walks over to Jorin and puts a hand on his arm. "I understand, my friend," he says, trying to sound more upbeat. "Worry not. We'll get to the bottom of this even without that mirror."
When Drusk hands him the hand mirror, Hildigrim's mood brightens considerably. He smiles at the half-orc and immediately begins looking at, and holding it at arm's length, looking into the mirror as he moves about the attic.
OOC: Does Hildigrim see anything strange about the mirror or in the mirror if he looks into it? He'll angle it around, even turning a complete 360, to see if anything strange is reflected as he moves about.
Hildigrim does not see anything strange in the mirror. He is convinced that there is nothing else to see in the attic.
Seren, hearing Quillary ask if she was still around, responds. (OOC: I figure she is 10-15' behind the party, watching their backs but staying out of fights unless someone wants her to charge forward.) She is standing by the trap door while the party was checking the rest of the attic. "I hear something downstairs. That hammer-on-nail sound has come back."

Quillary determines that the sound is coming from the canoe workshop (which had hammers and nails). She stays outside until the rest of the party catches up, and gestures to the room.
Drusk will stay back 15' from the doorway, as he is not very stealthy in his armor. He will wait until the others take action.

Holding up the mirror, Hildigrim says quietly, "Let me try something." He slowly and quietly backs into the room, looking over his shoulder with the mirror.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Angling the mirror into the room, you see a dreary, gray creature sitting at the workbench. It raises a hammer and lets it fall with a dull thud. As you watch, it turns its gaping grimace towards you, its stagnant eyes meeting yours in the reflection. It lurches out of the chair, and its gape widens as if wailing. Though no sound strikes your ears, the reflection in the mirror shows gray hands stretching through the fireplace from the workshop beyond.
You are not alone.
OOC: There are some unusual combat rules in play. Let me list what is going on:
Trying to do this with "theater of the mind" instead of maps. If this gets too confusing, we can switch.
Currently, Hilidigrim is just inside the doorway, and in melee range of one of the enemy. He sees that there is more than one, but doesn't know how many yet. Another enemy is coming through the fireplace, which is 15' away.
Only Hildigrim can see them as grey featureless humanoids, and only when looking in the mirror. When he first sees them, he needs to make a DC 12 WIS saving throw, or he will be frightened.
If anyone else wants to share the use of Hildigrim's mirror, they have to be within 5' of both Hildi and an enemy. At that first sighting, they will also need to make the WIS save or be frightened.
These creatures are invisible to everyone else (but Hildi), and they stay invisible.
While the enemy is invisible, it has Advantage, and your strikes have Disadvantage. If you don't know where an enemy is, you may be swinging wildly (chance for a miss no matter how good you roll).
At the start of this round, Hildigrim yells out that there is one by the fireplace, and one next to him. So if characters react before the creatures move, they can attack (with disadvantage, but they won't be swinging wildly.)
If something is unclear, ask. Combat has started, so post your actions. (Include an Init roll each round.)
Drusk: Is way in back. He hears a startled yell from Hildi about monsters, so he moves forward enough to cast Bless on Hildigrim, Quillary, and Jorin. If they go after Drusk in initiative, then they get the benefits of the spell (1d4 added for to-hit rolls and saving throws, for the next minute). Initiative: 11

Drusk does find a hand mirror on the window sill. Seeing the fate of the half-mirror, Drusk holds it protectively away from Jorin.
