As Hlldigrim gets caught up in describing the dance and the story, he fails to notice that the 2 cloaked figures are tensing up even more. The rest of the party can see them react negatively every time Hildi says "kuo-toa".
As Hildigrim is finishing his speech, one of the figures says quietly and devoid of feeling: "Kuo-toa are insane blights on the Underdark. They, and anyone that would consort with them, should be destroyed without mercy."
(OOC: Someone besides Hildi will need to come up with something better. Figuratively, the party is in a pit, and Hildi is digging the hole even deeper.)

The badger sighs, shaking its head, then convulses as its fur sloughs off, splitting and sliding, then drifting off into notes of dust and ash, leaving Quillary to stand up and shake off. She does this slowly, to not startle the drow any more than necessary.
”My name is Quillary, I am a druid of the life between ours and the next. I am no Xanathar, I have not their pendant, as we were one short after rescuing your machine man—your nimblewright—from the Xanathars pursuing it.”
She looks at the others, then back at the drow incredulously. “Does a dance off really work? I’ve lived with elves, so I know from strange rituals, but you Whaterdahvian gangs have cornered the market with this.”

The second figure (after recovering from seeing the badger-to-Quillary transition) blurts out pridefully: "That is Bregan D’Aerthe, not Whaterdahvian. Speak with respect!"
The first figure (who was doing all of the talking up to now) gestures for his fellow to be quiet. Turning to Quillary: "It is not that dancing is an elvish trait, but that those who are recruited by the Xanathar lack the grace to do it." (The way he said "elvish" has a hint of disdain.) Turning Jorin: "Bhinros (the nimblewright) told us of your earlier deeds. That is why we risked communicating with you. But the way you greeted those mercenaries as allies, followed by your lack of rhythm (other than the scaly one) is still suspicious."

Hildigrim opens his mouth to answer Pascal, but stops short as the stranger begins speaking.
"Kuo-toa are insane blights on the Underdark. They, and anyone that would consort with them, should be destroyed without mercy."
Hildigrim makes a surprised face. "That's not a very congenial thing to say," he responds more to himself while Quillary is performing her quick-change act.
After Jorin says, "Your nimblewright could vouch for us, we rescued it from a bunch of Xanathar, which is where we got the necklaces.", Hildigrim jabs a pointer finger at the human. "Oh, yes, my owl said the nimblewright ran to you following our encounter. By the way, I'd love to get a closer look at the construct," he smiles.
"Bhinros (the nimblewright) told us of your earlier deeds. That is why we risked communicating with you. But the way you greeted those mercenaries as allies, followed by your lack of rhythm (other than the scaly one) is still suspicious."
"Lack of rhythm?" Hildigrim asks, clearly dumbfounded. "I do believe my performance was spot-on. It might not have contained the flash and pomp you may have been expecting, but I don't think you need to bandy about with insults so heartlessly."
”Perhaps we are better at deception than dancing.”
Hildigrim folds his arms over his narrow chest. "Maybe you're better at deception than dancing," he grumbles.
(OOC: Did Hildigrim tell anyone about what he found out from Volo, before now? If he did, and I missed it, sorry.
I based their reaction from this comment in the MM: "Most notable of these threats are the drow, which have slain the kuo-toa on sight since the days when the two races first met.")
The second figure assumes an aggressive posture towards Hildigrim. "You were spying on us?" (Hildi continues digging a deeper hole for himself.)
The first figure holds up a hand to signal the second one to back off. He turns back to Quillary: "You were planning on visiting the Xanathar lair and rescuing Cory'bant'ex? That matches what we want, but also sounds foolhardy. The Xanathar lair is on the top Skullport level, along with their master. If you are referring to Skull Island, that is where their army resides, inside a fortress. Five people, no matter how skilled, cannot overcome those odds."

The druid looks up from her attempt at resting, opening one eye. "That's why we were going to deceive them. And... um, squeeze some information out of those real Xanathar thugs. In and out, like a shadow." She sort of waves her hand vaguely to hint at mysterious magics. Or something.

(turning back to Quillary) "If you wanted to question the abductor thugs, perhaps you shouldn't have let them walk away.
"As far as deceiving the Xanathar... You may get away with it the first and second times you are challenged, but are you confident your identity won't be exposed the 3rd, 4th, or 5th times? Skull Island is a big place, and crowded with over a hundred enemies. If you are unlucky to come across Commander Sundeth, he will not recognize you, and then you will spend your few remaining days in torment.
"That is a reason why we haven't rescued the prisoners ourselves. There are 3 places they might be: the command tower, the harbor, or the depleted armory. But we'd need to know which of the 3 is being used as a jail. A surprise attack would scarcely give us time to search 1 of those places."
