(OOC: That was the punchline. Quillary nonchalantly stating that the rat won't do anything useful, so Volo will have to check all of the passages anyways.)
Quillary: notices several large, bare footprints (a couple of sizes up from Sundeth's feet) coming from the west. It appears to go to the mushrooms in this cavern, and whatever it is probably ripped the mushrooms out of the ground.
Hilidigrim / Volo: The cavern to the east is kinda shaped like the letter "r". It is 20-30' wide, extends 50' to the east, and 80' to the south. Gardens of barrelstalk, bluecap, timmask, and trillimac fill the cavern. Between the garden patches meander paths that lead to and from the various exits. (There are exit passages to the north, east, and south.) The southern "wing" of this passage is thick with stalactites and stalagmites. As Volo is flying around the ceiling, he notices a few of the stalactites blinking and gnashing their teeth. (Several piercers are hanging from the ceiling. Volo notes where they are.)

Hildigrim gives a running monologue of what he sees through Volo's eyes. If anyone comments or asks a question, it is clear he either cannot hear them or is ignoring them. (I'm not sure if he's actually ever told them he can't see or hear when he's doing this.)
If that's everything that way (Volo has to stay within 100 feet of Hildi for this to continue to work), the owl will turn around and move on to the next tunnel. Since Hildi didn't hear that the rat isn't a scout, and he's assuming it is, Volo will avoid the tunnel it looked like the rat was going down.

(OOC: I'm a bit confused. When you say, "move on to the next tunnel", do you mean for that eastern cavern that Volo is in right now, or that Volo returns to the party and checks out another passage.
Also, Hildi doesn't have to stay locked into the owl's senses, if he wants to talk to the party. As you say, Volo can communicate telepathically within 100'. So if the owl temporarily perches in a safe location, Hildi can stop using the owl's senses and return to the halfling body. The owl can still inform Hildi if he should resume using the senses, or signal alarm if something shows up, or boredom, etc.)

She stands up, dusting off her hands. She makes her way to where Hildigrim is sitting and crouches down in front of him. “Can he hear us when he is like this?”

Jorin walks over to where Quillary and Hildigrim are sitting and says, "I do not know." and then pokes Hildigrim on the head a few times like he is taping a hot mic, "Do you hear us brave Hildi?"

OOC: I guess I figured Volo wouldn't be able to go any further in that direction and still be within 100', so I was thinking he'd come back and try another path from where the party is waiting. If the DM says he can continue searching the first cavern, we'll do that! Also, as Hildi hasn't had a lot of time to practice and experience going in and out of Volo's head, he might not know as much as the player does. :)
After Jorin taps on his head, Hildi's eyes blink, and he ducks his head forward. He looks around at Jorin and Quillary and then around quickly as if searching for trouble. "What is it?"
Quillary smiles at Hildi. "We were just wondering if you'd found anything? And also, to tell you not to go that way," she points west, where the Very Large Tracks came from.

Hildigrim gives the back of his head and perfunctory rub. "Only what I already told you. Were you listening? And, no, I can't see or hear from my own eyes and ears while I'm using Volo's eyes and ears." To Quillary, he smiles. "Did your rat find something?"
She looks around the cavern for the rat, which has surely run away. "No."

Possibly a dumb question, but do we have a general idea of the direction we need to go while heading through these caverns or are we just sort of winging it?
If winging, then i'd suggest we go not the way of the large feet.

Keep in mind, avoiding every confrontation will minimize fights, but also minimize conversations that provide information.)

Maybe for efficiency of communication we can just agree to use Volo to scout 100 ft into each passage when we arrive at decision points? I wouldn't mind seeing what made the big foot prints!
Volo flies west. Hildigrim's eyes get the familiar vacant look, as he relates what the owl is sensing.
The chamber to the west is roughly an "r" shape, 100' north-south, 50' east-west at the top, and 20-30' wide. Needle-sharp stalactites stud the 30-foot-high ceiling. Barrelstalk, bluecap, and ripplebark fungi grow in irregular patches throughout the cavern. There are two passages heading east (which line up with both the passages headed west from the party's location), and another set of narrow (5' wide) passages at the southern tip of this cavern.
At that point, Hildigrim has a puzzled look on his face, and is momentarily silent.
For Hildigrim only:
There is an ettin sitting in the center of the cavern. (Two-headed giant type, tougher than an ogre but not as difficult as a hill giant.) It is next to a pile of trillimac mushrooms, probably ripped out of the ground from the chamber Hildigrim is currently in. The ettin is alternating eating mushrooms, and drinking from a vat-like mushroom that is filled with some colored liquid that smells like paint thinner.
It is common knowledge that when ettins are in solitude, the two heads will bicker with each other since they don't like the company. Hildi is puzzled that these ettin heads are humming a duet happily. Terrible singing voices, but they don't seem to mind.
With the two heads able to watch the chamber more carefully than a single set of eyes, Volo is unable to escape being seen. Both heads look at the owl, and speak soothingly to it, gesturing for the owl to get closer. (The ettin sits up straighter, but otherwise does not move.) Each head tries a different language, but Hildi does not understand either language.
