Jorin is unable to get an answer to his question, as the crowd becomes animated. The bard was at the bar, and now makes his way across the tavern to the stage with great dexterity. His eye-searingly bright clothes make it impossible for him to hide. Rooster again addresses the crowd:
“Friends! We are gathered here today to celebrate Simril in this beautiful town of Amphail ! Good life to you all, and let's celebrate the solstice!”
He sips from a newly-delivered steaming mug of mulled cider. His eyes sparkle as he begins another melody, this time about the perseverance of the people of the North.
(OOC: The DM rolls were for the party's saves and checks... I can't remember ever seeing so many 1s and 2s and 3s... sorry.)
Pascal (and only Pascal) notices the temperature in the room has dropped by several degrees. He also sees that the entire audience is focused on the bard, and ignoring anything else. This includes Drusk, Hildigrim, and Jorin. Even the bard seems a little glassy-eyed, as he plays his frenzied tune. On the other hand, Quillary is disdainfully ignoring the song, but is so focused on her contempt for the elf bard that she hasn't noticed what is happening to the crowd.
Pascal and Quillary are startled to hear shrieks from the table to the east.
A wife is bending over her husband. She is bleeding from a large gash on her arm. He is unconscious from a head wound, maybe dying.
The third person at the table has a gash across his chest, and he is running towards the front door.
Nobody else responds to their screams, as the crowd (including Drusk, Hildigrim, and Jorin) are still watching the performing bard.
Having recovered from their surprise, Pascal and Quillary see the gladiator, the dwarf thief, and the plate-mailed knight are on their feet, their weapons drawn. The blood on their weapons is from the 3 people at the table to the east. All 3 adventurers are stone-faced and methodically moving forward. This includes the gladiator, who should be having trouble walking straight, but isn't moving like a drunken person.
Pascal and Quillary can post their actions this round. Include an initiative roll. (I will try to do concurrent initiative.)
Beegred Thornpost - Lvl 8 Halfling Ranger - Out of the Abyss by Kerrec Drusk - Lvl 8 Half-Orc Life Cleric - The Long Road: Dragon Heist by Mingofaust (player & current DM) Hunferho Aelorothi - Lvl 5 Half-Elf Bard/Rogue - Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus (by Pokepaladdy) DM - Frontier City of Nunkreet (ended)
Jorin in on his feet, clapping on beat with the song of the Northern people, his face beaming with solemn pride and quite possibly a tear in his eye.
Jorin was on his feet and clapping as the song started, but soon slumped back down in his chair, staring vacantly at the performing bard.

Quillary’s initiative: 12
She stands up with a whoop. “Come along, Jorin of the Bodt!” She whacks the barbarian across the back of his head with her cudgel. “We have some of your sorcery to send home!”
”Pascal, would you see to our small friend?”
She taps her club to the cat skull, imbuing it with the magic of her spores. (Shillelagh) If Jorin seems to come to his senses, she will stride towards the three adventurers.

(Jorin doesn't come around unless Quillary does damage. But she is allowed to do a 1 damage club whack.)

Hildigrim takes 1 point of damage from a scaly swipe of Pascal's hand. Next round Jorin and Hildigrim can act normally, although they are a bit confused about what is happening.
The knight and the thief step up to the long dining table and slash at 2 of the people sitting there. They are heavily wounded, but still conscious. Those 2 diners cry out in pain, and look around in confusion.
The gladiator was also headed towards that table, but Quillary stepped in his way. The gladiator swings his sword, but misses. (A 1 on the die.)
All 3 of these adventurers are moving clumsily. Not like being drunk, but like they haven't trained with their weapons. (Quillary was waiting for the gladiator to swing a second time, but he didn't.)
Still using the map from post 2172. Quillary is in melee range of the gladiator, just south of the long dining table. The knight and thief are hacking at the people sitting at that table. Jorin, Pascal, and Hildigrim are still at the rectangular table (SW of the dining table).
Everyone except Drusk can post their actions this round. Include an initiative roll for concurrent initiative.

"Sorcery!" Jorin snears, and goes to the club gladiator with the flat of his axe.
Battleaxe Attack 19 for 1 dmg
Moonblade Attack 11 for 1 dmg
OoC - Rolling for both attacks, but if the first one connects, he'd take a beat to evaluate if the gladiator recovered his senses before bopping him again.
OOC > isn’t non-lethal damage the same die rolls as regular damage, it just doesn’t cause death saves?
Anyone staring vacantly at the bard can be hit automatically by a melee weapon, which is why Quillary and Pascal did not need a to-hit roll when they whacked Jorin and Hildigrim.
While they needed to draw blood, they were given the option of minimizing the damage (1 point)
If Jorin choses to minimize the damage to the gladiator, that is his choice. He does need to make to-hit rolls, since the gladiator is actively fighting.
Melee attacks can always be made non-lethal. (That decision can be made as late as after seeing what the damage roll is.) If a non-lethal strike reduces someone to 0 hp, it does not require death saves.

Quillary hopes the gladiator’s poor skill continues as she moves away from him to intercept the other two. Hefting her shield and club, she whirls the cudgel at the knight, while sending her spores after the thief. She is not pulling her punches, but is not trying to kill.
Move: to the knight and the thief, even if it provokes an attack of opportunity from the gladiator.
Action: attack knight with Shilelagh’d club: 17 to hit, for 7 non-lethal magical bludgeoning damage
Reaction: when the thief starts his turn, he must make a Con Save vs DC 15 or suffer 4 necrotic damage from the spores.
Initiative if needed: 15

Pascal simply forms a circle with his fingers in front of his lips, “Double Bubble.” As he does, he blows two lvl 3 Chromatic Orbs that float in the air. He snaps his fingers and both race toward the knight and the gladiator! As they collide, the detonate into a cacophonous boom!

Er... are we aiming for non-lethal still? I may regret my choices now. I maaaay have let the raw power of 3rd level spells go to my head.
Er... are we aiming for non-lethal still? I may regret my choices now. I maaaay have let the raw power of 3rd level spells go to my head.
(OOC: Good thing you mentioned the knight first, because she has AC 18 and was only hit by the first attack.
All 3 figures have decent HP, so no risk of them dying... yet... Only melee attacks can be non-lethal. The knight has the best AC but least hp, the gladiator lowest AC but highest hp. You can discuss strategy before posting an action for a round.)
Hildigrim is last to go. (I will roll for Jorin's initiative, unless he does so. If he changes his mind about minimal damage, then include damage rolls.)

"Ow," Hildigrim complains, coming to and placing a hand to where Pascal hit him. He starts to say more, but when the big, red lizard and their half-elf companion scoot off and start attacking, the halfling immediately realizes something is amiss. Still confused, but suspecting the music might have a hand in his confusion, he rushes over to the bard and kicks him in the shin.
OOC: Volo can't attack, so he can't do anything that would cause 1 hp of damage, correct?
