Seeing that Noke is paralyzed and the bed dragon is on its last bed posts, Jorin will direct a flurry of non-lethal blows to the stricken wizard, hoping the end the conflict here and now!

Hildigrim asks to see the wand, comments to the others that they should question Noke to get his side of the story just in case, examines the wand (arcana: 12) while they're questioning Noke, and then casts identify on the wand as a ritual (11 minutes) just because he's curious.

Quillary puts her club away, then turns to bring the sheep into the fold, nodding sagely as it bleats. She will attempt to find a length of rope to tie around its neck and hitch it to a large piece of furniture.

”Could we not hand this whole ness over to the constabulary, or some high wizard in Waterdeep?”

Pascal tilts a head, “You, uh, really needing to tie him up?” He gestures to the sheep.

Hildigrim has read about the rare wand of polymorph, but this appears to be a wand of true polymorph. If Noke would have concentrated on that bed dragon for an hour, it would have stayed that way.

The wand has been stressed from overuse and improper use. The repair work is keeping it from falling apart, but it doesn't look stable.

(A higher arcana check is needed to learn more.) Drusk will help Hildigrim examine the wand again (since you already rolled that 12, one more normal roll please), and this time he will pray for Lliira to lend Guidance to Hildigrim's efforts. ( + 2 to the check.)

Drusk points out that any reward by Shinebright was for restoring him to his elf form. If the party doesn't try to fix the situation now, you walk away empty handed.

And if a dumb constable is assigned to the case, you might spend days explaining (over and over) what was going on with the animals... and the killer bed.

If Shinebright gets restored, then he gets to spend the time explaining it to the Waterdeep guards.

Noke suggests helpfully that if you are worried about side-effects from using the wand to restore sheep Shinebright... you could untie him and hand him the wand to use.

"Only to restore that ungrateful blowhard to his normal form, not to inflict righteous vengeance upon your miserable thieving group... You can trust me."

Pascal considers.

”Nope.”

He stuffs an apple in Noke’s mouth.

“It ain’t food, let me tell you that. I’m pretty sure that if you break it, then the spell will be undone!“

“Perhaps the sheep can tell us how to proceed?” Quillary wonders aloud, looking at the sheep in question.

”Tell us, should we break the wand to return everyone to their true form?” she asks him. 

Jorin is excited by the idea of breaking the wand!

(If Hildigrim rolls enough higher on his second Arcana check, you will have more info. Or you can try to trick it out of Noke.)

Hildigrim understands True Polymorph enough to know that after an hour, the change persists. Breaking the wand won't affect previous castings, will prevent you from using the wand, and you don't know what the arcane energy in the broken wand will do.

The sheep "baaah"s several times, but Quillary doesn't understand. (Back at the Road's End, the sheep walked in with a scroll in its mouth...)

"Can you not nod your head yes, or shake it no?" Quillary asks the sheep.

With Drusk's help, Hildi keeps examining ... 11 + 2 ... oh well.

Hildigrim looks aghast at the idea of breaking the wand. "You misunderstand the disposition of magical items," he says. "That's not how magic items work." He stops, adopting his storytelling face. "Well, actually it is. An adventurer told me once he had an eversmoking bottle. He needed to make a quick getaway, so he broke the bottle, thinking the smoke with expand and create a screen, but once the bottle was broken, the smoke disappeared." He looks aghast again. "But we're not breaking this wand." His head swivels. "Noke was working on some scrolls. And Shinebright brought along a spell that helped us comprehend his bleating. Perhaps there's another helpful one around here." He begins searching for completed spell scrolls. "Nudge us toward anything helpful, please," he calls to the sheep.

Investigation (with help): 20

Sheep shakes "no" (rather angrily) at the suggestion of breaking his beloved wand.

Hildigrim is unable to determine more. (Arcana checks will not reveal anything else.)

Jorin spits on the ground and looks at Noke, "Listen here, I have had enough of this foolery.  If you will not help us decipher this wand, then you are of no use to us."  He takes a couple steps towards the man and brandishes his axe, "I made this axe with my own hand and it is very good and splitting skulls." Intimidation: 14

(OOC: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Noke felt abused by Shinebright for many years, so intimidating him was the hardest thing to try. 10 is not enough.)

"We are still under Waterdeep law. If dying means the five of you spend your best years in the dungeons for murder, that works for me."

(You can try using the wand right now, but with the uncertainty of what the damage has done to the wand.)

Quillary looks frustrated. "Well, with no assistance from anyone with a stake in the matter, I am not sure how to proceed. Perhaps we need a test subject." She looks pointedly at Noke. "Let us turn him into something, then attempt to turn him back. If we get lucky, we will know how to fix these others. If not... well, surely the City Watch will know of someone who can do it."

Jorin nods at Quillary, "I do not normally take the arcane approach, but I do like that idea."
