"Excellent, thank you so much!" Dog bolts up, gathers his stuff, and anyone who wants to come along to the meeting (Bulwark? Tock?).
He heads to the gardens by way of the shop with the alchemy jug and mundane flasks, checking the price and purchasing it with the money Gash showed him earlier if it's not too expensive. Then he goes to the gardens about 15 minutes before the bells are due to ring, and ritually cast detect magic, as Gash taught him, ten minutes before the bell. He'll look around and get the lay of the land. He'll silently ask any gods or goddesses who might be listening what he should do. "Is this what a prayer is?"
A more peaceful silence falls on the pair as Martin contemplates the presence of angels in Masa. A flutter of movement from the rooftops grabs his eye as a small flock of pigeons scatter in many different directions. It reminds him of game giving away their presence by disturbing the local wildlife.
The realization strikes like a lightning bolt that this is very much like that situation. A lone figure crouches at the edge of the rooftop, perhaps 400 or more feet away from where Martin sits. It appears to be a temple of some sort with a slightly domed roof. The silhouetted figured raises a crossbow.and takes aim.
"Martin?" Gargus says, concern in his voice.
The figure fires downwards, towards the streets or perhaps into a courtyard or through a window. The figure examines his handiwork and then departs, swiftly and silently back along the rooftops, scattering more birds as he flees.
Althus:
The gardens are indeed beautiful, containing exotic plants from all over Alcion. Statues and topiaries adorn the carefully manicured garden. Small plaques label the plants, including local varieties. One small corner is even dedicated to local crops grown by the farms around Masa. Ritter stands looking at one of the statues, a serene expression on his face. It is a statue of Lathander, isntantly recognizable to Althus.
The paladin walks up to his new friend and joins him for a brief moment in reverence of Lathander. When he turns to speak, a single crossbow bolt is piercing the man's skull, straight through the back and out of his right eye. Ritter collapses in a heap at the foot of Lathander, his reverent smile still on his face.
Dog (et al.):
After buying his supplies (450gp for the alchemy jug) and 1 gold for 4 flasks), Dog arrives at the botanical gardens again. The garden is somewhat empty again. A couple leaves shortly after Dog arrives. Another pair are wandering the grounds. One is a cloaked figure, clearly being led around by the other, a man dressed dapperly in black with dark, coiffed hair that is graying at the temples. While the two stand admiring a statue of a god, the man in black collapses to the ground, a crossbow bolt piercing through the back of his head. The angle of the attack appears to have been from a rooftop to the south.
Gash:
"Well, all of the options were about the same, really. The negotiators worked most of it out, but what I agreed to will saveGentoa...little Genny...and me any more trouble."
Neventi smiles adoringly at her daughter as they brush the horse together.
“Gargus, I’ll be back. Someone’s shooting from that roof top! And I’ll check into that gossip. You know, for druids looking after the city.” That last he says a bit sardonically and takes off towards the shooter. He’ll try to sneak once he’s closer.
“If you think it will save you both then that’s what we will do. With your time here have you learned much of the accords? Did the Minotaurs treat you okay? I know you kept telling me you were fine and for us to take our time but we were so worried and poor Genny was a wreck without you. She barely woofed at Dog.”

If able, Althus will use his reaction to use his Aura of the Guardian, taking the damage for Ritter if he is within 10 ft. Otherwise he'll grab Ritter's body, pulling him so that he is between Althus and the statue. If Ritter is still alive, Althus will give him 10 points of Lay On Hands.
The assassin is running along the rooftops and Martin is in the streets. Martin gets 5 dash actions and I allow swapping one for an alternate action. Taking a bonus action or reaction means dropping out of the chase rules.
Martin's chase target is 450 feet away, and, for the purposes of simplicity, we will say that the streets run parallel to the rooftop path the assassin is taking.
First round: Assassin chase complication roll: 1
First round: Martin chase complication roll: 10
Escape check: Assassin stealth vs. Martin's passive perception: 11 vs. 16
As soon as he tracks the general direction of the bolt, Dog roars and flies using his boots straight up and curving toward the southern rooftops, scanning for anyone who looks like they may have just shot a crossbow or is retreating. He will use his action todash closer bellowing about assassins and deadly fire...
"Oh, I wasn't involved that much," she says with a kind smile. "I just needed to agree when I was presented with an option I could accept. I have been treated perfectly fairly by the minotaur. Oh! I should say goodbye before we leave tomorrow."
Althus:
Althus is too slow to absorb the damage. The fallen man's wounds won't heal as the fatal blow has instantly sent the poor fellow's soul on to Lathander.
The assassin is running along the rooftops and Dog is in hot pursuit along the same rooftops. Dog gets 5 dash actions and I allow swapping one for an alternate action. Taking a bonus action or reaction means dropping out of the chase rules.
Dog's chase target is about 100 feet away.
The assassin deftly vaults from one rooftop to another (rolled elsewhere).
First round: Dog's chase complication roll: 6 (no complication)
Escape check: Assassin stealth vs. Dog's passive perception: 11 (rolled elsewhere) vs. 13
The assassin runs through a heavy flock of birds, dodging to avoid their talons and beaks as they fight off what they think is an attacker. 25
Martin encounters no obstacles but Dog sees a maze of old crates and chimneys potentially blocking the way. He searches for the best route through them without breaking his stride: 18
As Dog comes out of the maze of crates and chimneys, still at full tilt, he looks ahead to see that the assassin has disappeared.
On the ground, Martin barrels down the street and crosses under an arch between two buildings. In that brief moment, he loses track of the assassin as well.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Can Dog use an action to try to cast catapult 600 feet ahead and to the side of the quarry on a flagstone or pebble or some other loose small item he sees on the roof ahead, and firing it at ludicrous speed 90 feet in the direction of the quarry, forcing it to make a DC15 Dex saving throw? He'd time it to hit just as the quarry was in the process of jumping from one rooftop to another, hoping to make it lose its balance and jump poorly and perhaps fall. The impact, should the save fail, causes 22 bludgeoning damage.
If the geometry or the distance of the catapult spell doesn't work, Dog will try to get close enough to cast silent image just ahead of the quarry to make it look like three large solars are levitating up from an alleyway between the current rooftop and the next, brandishing swords, hoping to make the quarry stop and run back toward Dog.
Also what does the figure look like? Big/small? Colors? Bipedal? Tail? Anything else Dog's spotting as he chases?
Edit: OOC sorry, I was a bit too slow, but this was meant for the first round. If I've missed it in the last 20 mins, that's fine. Was reading up on the chase rules. But if the story's headed elsewhere, we'll move on.

Althus:

Dog:
The assassin's DEX(15) check: 16
The assassin moves nimbly, dodging with an awareness that is almost supernatural. He does not look special, glad in dark leathers, of medium build, and humanoid. It is hard to say whether he is an elf, half-elf, human, small half-orc, or some other comparably sized race. Getting a better look will entail finding him now, though...

(No worries. Since you hadn't gotten to post, I felt it was fair to let you cast your spell and resume accordingly)
Martin Shifts. His eyes become like a hawk’s, and his ears elongate. His breaths bring new senses to bear on the air in his mouth and nose.
(Shifter feature grants advantage on wisdom checks when shifted. Any chance I can try to track him still by sounds/scent/tracks, etc?)
