He has heard of animated statues before and has an inkling of how the magic might work, even. They are typically created with commands to perform a simple task, usually defending a location or object, and they can be created to accept new commands from a specific person as well, although they are often autonomous and left to their charge.
Gash stands with his eyes closed as his owl (does it have a name?) launches into the air, giving him a literal bird's eye view of the ruins.
Gash:
He can see the ruins are relatively unchanged, although the fountain that was once surrounded by statues no longer has any statues and the water in the fountain is now completely drained.
The southern statue steps forward, looking directly at Nev through a moss-covered face and raises its sword, then proceeds to point in the same direction as the eastern statue.
"Uh, friends," she says nervously. "What is the plan here?"
"I agree -- I think these statues are just trying to guide, and maybe defend something, but not threaten. They don't seem to think we're threats. Even if they could be dangerous, why don't we all go check out what they're trying to show us? Come along Nev, maybe Genny will sleep through this and we'll have a funny story to tell her."
Dog tries to help Nev down the stairs and curiously looking at the thing the statues might be indicating. "Lucien, do you recognize anything about these statues or the grounds which might tell us what deity was worshipped here? They just look like stones to me."
Gash jumps back to his body and says telepathically, "Thank you, Friend." (I've just decided the familiar's name is friend. lol)
"The fountain is drained, and these appear to be the statues that were around it." Gash begins to walk the way the statues direct and he asks one of them directly, "Do you speak? Are we safe?"

The statues do not reply and nor do they react when Feytok and Dog begin moving. When Nev stands and starts to carry Gentoa down the stairs, two of the statues walk alongside her, the other two waiting behind.
Gash will telepathically communicate with Friend and tell him to watch the two statues that do not follow and periodically Gash will check into his vision to see if anything happens.

Gash- Lvl14 Goblin Wizard - The High Court of the Aasimar Queen
As Keyrie, Gash, Lucien, and Tock follow the others down the steps, the two remaining statues fall in behind them, forming a long train of people leading down to the fountain. There, the broken-faced statue climbs over the lip of the fountain and down the ladder into the darkness below.
The next statue points at the ladder, otherwise unmoving.
As the rest of the group collects around the old fountain, the remaining two statues strategically place themselves to form a triangle with the third statue that surrounds the group. Their swords are still drown, but held low.
Dog offers to carry Gentoa down the ladder if that would be easier for Nev. He watches FeyTok begin to descend illuminated by fire - can he see a bottom? And how wet are things? And are there any switches or levers or anything he can see that would indicate how this giant hole in the fountain appeared? He wants to figure out how it works, and why he didn't see anything like it when he did his initial scouting of the grounds.
The statue is totally silent. It doesn't not even visibly react to Gash's question. Down in the fountain, he can see through Friend's eyes that the broken-face statue is waiting at the bottom of the ladder. Symbols on its body glow a faint golden hue. It is facing in the direction of a long tunnel that stretches far into the darkness.
Descending into the dark well below the fountain reveals a simple stone construction with no obvious levers or mechanisms. The broken-face statue stands at the bottom of the well, runes all over its body faintly glowing a golden hue that is only visible in the complete dark of this place. It is facing east into a long, dark tunnel with no obvious light source indicating its terminus, even to Feytok's sensitive vision.
Nev follows Dog down the well as he carries Gentoa cradled in his arm. She wakes up from the jostling, which probably could not be helped, and she starts crying. The statue at the bottom does not respond and Nev takes her daughter back, singing her quietly back to sleep.
Tock wakes up with a start, "Oh, Lucien.. I didn't recognize you last night, I was really knocked out of it."
"WHAT ARE THESE?!!!"
"Guides or traps I suppose. "
( ooc long rest yet or no?)
(No. Only a short rest.)
Dog tries to figure out if he remembers anything about, or can ascertain the magical nature of, the statues (15 +4 arcana +2 history/religion).
Telepathically, Gash tells his newly made familiar to fly in the direction the statue is pointing.

Feytok creates a flame in his hand to light the way for those without dark vision and begins to descend.
Gash sends his owl into the fountain ahead of everyone else.
She then casts message at the statue pointing. “Are we prisoners? Please respond”
he waits for a response and if he gets none he gets none he will tap into Friend to see what’s down there

Feytok will throw his fire down the tunnel and see how far it goes, recasting it after just for visibility purposes.
"I don't know what is going on, but if these statues were hostile they could have attacked while most of us slept."
