Dusty shakes his head. "We haven't even asked Mary what her particular set of skills are. Mary, if you'd indulge. Your lineage is impressive, and your temperament is compatible, but says nothing of the nature of your abilities."
The Cartophile clarifies, "With all due respect, you're going on an expedition to a lost city. We aren't sure what, if anything, is living there, but I doubt you'll need your morals. I guess I can't be certain, as it's been centuries, the civilization could be thriving cut off from the world for all we know. Just know that my employees are not going to get in your way or make decisions for you, they are there to guide, help, and make maps, not judge or scold. As long as I get any documentation, old maps, journals, sketches, schematics and such, I don't care how you handle it. Speaking of which, the sketch of the city, may I?"

" 'at one", Fjolnir points, beard glistening having been steeped in the tea he drank. "No telling what sort machinations we'll cross. Shite what 'asn't seen the light of day ever, an designed just to kill." he chuckles. "I don't want to die on an empty stomach or without a caustic joke."
Big dumb smile ignoring everything but what Folnir said. Did you hear the one about the Goliath, the gnome and the seven-ten-split? ..... Uh.... hmm, something about "Boulder"....
With the conversation and questions slowing down, Anaxi closes, "So you'll take all three with you to ensure a successful expedition? Marvelous! Garrett, Gearbox, Mary, pack your bags and assist these fine adventurers with whatever they need for the next... however long it takes to get to the Barrier Peaks. I suggest traveling by boat, as my dwarven friend here suggested, even better if you can procure free passage. Be careful, though, the peaks themselves are dangerous, and no one knows what happened to Kwalish's expedition, all we have are notes, and it took years to put it all together. My people will get you through the peaks and may be helpful to you afterward as well, but in the end they work for me, and I am loaning their particular skillsets and time to you as payment for any journals, maps, or other documentation or items related to Kwalish himself. He lived hundreds of years ago, so be prepared to face other things that may have moved into wherever he set up his lab. Is that a deal?" He holds out his hand to whoever wants to speak for the group.
(We'll assume that the NPC guides will take a backseat to your actions, especially in roleplaying, conversations, and combat, unless someone explicitly says otherwise. They will only participate in conversations when addressed, or in combat when asked, except at certain key points in the adventure or their personal areas of expertise. I may also use them as plot devices to move things along if need be, but my main point is that this is YOUR adventure, not mine, and I'm not going to play them as DM PCs. They are hirelings and will be treated as such.)

Mary raises an eyebrow as Dirk moves in to give her a hug. His intent obvious, her cold stare unwavering, Dirk is surprised as she allows him to get inches from her without flinching or even attempting to stop him. Dirk closes his arms around her form and *poof*. Suddenly she isn't there anymore. Dirk looks down and sees her cat familiar shaking its head with a disapproving look on its face, as most cats are want to do. Dirk whirls around just in time to see Mary walking through the door on the opposite side of the room. Without looking back, she holds the door long enough for her cat to dart through, "Nice try," then swings the door closed.
The other two leave as well, retreat to their quarters, and return with a sack of supplies for themselves. Everyone meets at the front of the estate to plan their next move... although Mary now keeps at least two people between herself and Dirk.

On the way out Absinthe stops by the guard he helicoptered. "First show was free, next one you have to pay for." Absinthe blows him a kiss and gives him a good game slap on the ass.
Dustfinger keeps his eye on Gearbox, totally fascinated with this being. He leans over to the bard, "Garrett, how did you all come to be of service to the Cartophile?"
"We're both into maps, you know, so naturally someone who makes maps would be found by someone who collects them eventually. This little contraption is with me, found him exploring a cave and he just stuck with me ever since. I think he's looking for whatever Kwalish found, or maybe whatever Kwalish made, but it's something to do with him, some things get lost in translation." Gearbox bleep-blorps. "But Mary is, well, less transparent. I'm not sure what she's after, perhaps Anaxi requires her specific set of talents for something? She does have some diving talent, which is useful for, well anything pretty much, so probably that."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Fjolnir thinks a moment about all he's learned so far, pours back over memories to see if he recalls the name, "Kwalish" or the destination, the "Barrier Peaks".

Ask for your own qualifications, I'm only concerned with someone who stays out of our way.

"We should bring all three with us. We're good at killing and sarcasm but, since the wizard left, probably not much else."
I ask each one if they know starlight. Assuming its a no from all of them.
"They can all come as far as I'm concerned. We don't know what we face any skill set could tip the scale."
I hope we don't outweigh the benefits of taking them all on, with the hidden potential for hindrance. I'll reserve the right to say "I told you so".

"Well, since we know we're taking Mary either way, how would Mary vote?" Dustfinger looks to Mary.
"I don't care what you do."

This seems fair. I shake his hand.
Sounds good to me. I attempt to hug Mary 14 +3 if acrobatics +1 if athletics grapple.
