Hearing the captain make his speech, Kestrell sets the boxes down and runs back to his post. Kestrell notices Kay hopping around the rigging trying to expose as much sail as possible and offers her a few words of encouragement: "Roses are red, violets are blue, Kay knows many fine knots to help us sail true!"
At his post, Kestrell will take his Viol and sing a tune to calm everyone's emotions and help them focus on their respective tasks:
"We were born before the wind Also younger than the sun Ere the bonnie boat was won As we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry Smell the sea and feel the sky Let your soul and spirit fly Into the mystic"
Credit: Van Morrison, Into the Mystic
OOC: Kay gets a 1d6 Bardic Inspiration die. IN the next 10 minutes it can be added to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw after seeing the roll but before knowing the outcome.
Ferris grins as he kneels in the nest and takes up his crossbow. Looking over the lip of the barrel Ferris looks to the Foamrunner and begins to first visually identify what would be a good place to place a bolt to weaken ropes.
Perception: 13 (Plus 2 if Coast terrain counts.)
Using the elevated vantage point of the crows nest to good effect, Ferris spots two potentially suitable targets - the first, a single vertical line running from the cross-jack yard on the Foamrunner's mizzenmast and, the second, a rope connecting a number of staysails that hang between the mizzen and mainmasts. The lookout's discerning eye and experience aboard ship leads him to understand that severing either line would disrupt the function of the attached sails, but that the latter option of the staysail line (the harder of the two shots) had the potential to be more disruptive, due to the fact that limp staysails could tangle nearby lines and would require more hands to set right.
[OOC] Absolutely you get the favoured terrain bonus, as a perception roll made in a coastal area, aboard ship and in relation to a ship's operation definitely qualifies.

When the Shark's Navigator produces his viol and begins to play and sing, a number of the nearby crew seem surprised, swept up in their own tasks as they are. Ferris was a bit aged yes but he also liked to think he got that way by playing it big and not backing down from the many challenges of the sea, as any who knew his history would attest to. He steadied his crossbow on the lip and targeted the staysail line. A difficult shot to be sure but he wanted his new shipmates to really excel in this endeavor, he could tell that they needed the win.
Kay grits her teeth as she does her best to keep up with the other sail monkeys, keeping the sails tight to take advantage of any favorable winds. Judging the distance just within range of his weapon, Ferris sights down the length of the crossbow and takes a steadying breath... before making one of the best shots of his career. The quarrel flies fast and true, hitting the line with sufficient force to sever it cleanly. Instantly, the two now loose lengths of rope, and the attached stay sails, fall and tangle in the surrounding lines. While the Foamrunner is still moving forward, the sharp-shooting lookout hears the shouts of concern from the deck of the nearby ship as a number of her sailors rush to try to repair the damage. Beneath the crows nest, a familiar high pitched voice calls up, "Nice shot, mate! That should slow them down some."
[OOC] HIT: the line is successfully severed and the Foamrunner is slowed by the damage.

gust carefully pointed at the sails in order to increase our speed
The sail monkeys and rigging rats, who were already working hard above, seem to almost double their productivity under the Master of Sail's instruction and urging. The Shore Shark's sails billow outwards, rippling in the wind even as they help drive the caravel through the water. Shouts of joy resound across the deck as many of the crew exalt in the feeling of being underway atop the waves. Conversely, A'ro notices shouts of consternation from across the water, originating from the deck of the Foamrunner where it seems some mishap has befallen some of their lines and sails. As the two ships leave the wharf and make their way out into the harbour, it is clear to the genasi officer that the Shark has the early lead.
Clearly pleased with his ship's speed and progress, and noticing the energy and efficiency of the sailors topside, Captain Aundrey calls out to his Master of Sail in a joyful tone, "Incredible work, Mr. A'ro. You're team is performing wondefully! Keep this up and we'll leave that peacock Rufulo in our wake for certain!"
[OOC] Since the persuasion check is an action, A'ro will have to cast gust next round.

As Ferris stows his crossbow and looks out from the nest, he notices a young rigging rat in the foremast rigging staring at the marksman with undisguised awe. Seeing him look back, the young man (little more than a boy, really) grins and gives the lookout a thumbs up before going back to his work.
Looking to the harbour, Ferris sees that the Shark will soon be coming up alongside a low, long and wide shelf of rock halfway between the wharf and the harbour mouth.
[OOC] Spoiler for Ferris:
While Unne's heading looks safe to clear the edge of the rock showing above the waterline, a dark mass beneath the waves suggests the possibility of a wider, submerged level of rock that might endanger the ship on its current heading.

When Nibs sees Vaken filling the waterskins, the robust half-orc insists on helping, and between the two of them, the crew is kept well hydrated on the initial leg of its maiden voyage. Vaken comes across the gnome carpenter Yentil, who while working like all the rest of the crew, seems to be given a wide berth by most of the other sailors. The older man thanks the goliath for the refreshment, seeming happy to have not been overlooked by the ship's cook.
The large, doughy sailor Nubrel moans a bit about being given water instead of ale, which starts a few of the other deck hands complaining along similar lines, but Vaken's calm words and steady demeanor soon dissipate the mild disquiet. Looking out as the deck crew continue their work, Vaken notices that the Shore Shark seems to have a lead on the Foam Runner of at least a few lengths.

Learning quickly from her initial attempts and redoubling her efforts, Kay soon loses herself in the suggestions and commands of her fellow sailors and officers. Scampering and swinging through the rigging in a near fever pitch of activity, the slight sail monkey's work output soon surpases that of even the other more experienced sailors topside with her.
Sweat dripping from her forehead despite the cooling winds the blow through the rigging, the novice sailor's hands and muscles soon ache from the exertion of her endeavours, though the taut lines and full sails across the mainmast speak to the efficiency of her efforts. Lost in the pleasure of her work, the waif is all but oblivious to Zaretta's grumbling about "Young show offs..." and Ol' Jart's energetic and encouraging shout, "That a girl, Kay! Let the wind carry ye! Wooho..."
[OOC] Spoiler for Kay:
Suddenly the sounds all around you vanish. The abrupt silence is total and jarring in its suddeness, not like a temporary lull in sound, but as if all noise in the world simply ceased to exist all at once. The calls from the Master of Sail below, the snapping of the sails around you and even the continuous splashing of the waves on all sides... these sounds and all others are suddenly and inexplicably gone. Looking to the end of the spar upon which you stand, you see the tabaxi sail monkey looking right at you. Her mouth appears to be moving, but as with everything else, no sound reaches Kay's ears.
