Virtoris felt like he made his point and all he can do is wait for the Captain to make his decision. The other's opinion mattered it's true, but the final word here would be Capn' Aundrey's. Virt looked at the Captain, sitting there listening to his words. Quietly taking in his impassioned plea.
'Kestrel returned Virt's nod and stands up to reach his offered hand.'
"Kestrell, Kestrell Season. The pleasure is mine my other new-blue friend!"
'Kestrell was impressed with Virt's impassioned plea, and decided to offer him a little bardic inspiration, if needed for persuading the captain':
"There once was an artificer named Virt.
Who also enjoyed desert.
Yes it is true, he was very blue
Listening to his words could not hurt!"

"I do enjoy a good dessert, friend."

A'ro looked at the man and smiled "Just A'ro mate and that's fine. So do you know how long the man has been sailing? Cause honestly knowing now that you're an artificer, wouldn't it be better for the Capt'in to just dual slot you as the Carpenter and Ship Mage? This would allow him to save some money that he could invest in better items for the ship and crew."
"As for this man you want us to bring on - you can't tell us how long he's been a craftsman or if he has experience on a ship. If you don't mind me asking - how do you even know this man?" A'ro's voice was gentle as he asked this question, it was clearly only out of concern for their journey.
"His whole life, I'd reckon. I actually don't know his sailing record that well. But valid points, valid points. Though I am an Artificer. Not a carpenter. We both build things with our hands, tis is true, A'ro. But that's where our similarities end. Virt laughs nervously at the thought of being named the carpenter as well as looks over at the bard and back to A'ro, "He's a friend of me da's."
"What do ye say, Capn' Au'drey? Can we give 'im a go?" Deflecting the question back to the Captain was the best course of action here, A'ro seemed to show real concern. That's a good mind right there', Virtoris thought to himself. A tactile mind and a thoughtful one would be most appreciated on this voyage. But right now, he needed the Captain to make the decision without anymore outside influence.

A'ro just nodded"So we don't know if he has experience fixing a ship on open waters - that could lead us to drowning."
A'ro smiled and looked at the Captain and his fellow Officers"Gentlemen, may I propose that he demonstrate his abilities as a carpenter on the water - a try out of sorts. I remember looking over the railing and seeing a couple of workings in boats fixing up a gouge in the outer starboard hull. How about we task out potential Carpenter with fixing it and judge his skills based on that? Say we give him a day to fix that and if any other problems are on the ship a couple of those. I think it only fair to ensure if something goes wrong we know the man has the ability to prevent us from sinking long enough to get to port and safety. It will also help him later on - he already has the fact that he's a gnome stacked against him with the crew, the last thing he needs is that being the friend of an officers daddy got him the job. If he is hired on skill and skill alone then the crew will eventually be able to get over him being a gnome."
He just waited for the responses and decision between the two proposals" I also think pastries would be a good idea friends." he added with a quick playful smile and nod to the two.

'The First Mate and Quarter Master both look at Virtoris hopefully as A'ro suggests that the Ships Mage also fill the Caprenter's role aboard ship. When Virt explains his lack of expertise in working wood, both look dissapointed, particularly E'strue.
The Captain and both the other officers also nod their heads at A'ro's question about this friend's relative experience, with the Captain saying,'
"A most excellent question, Master of Sail. While your previous suggestion is unfortunately not tenable due to the good Ship Mage's lack of skill in carpentry, we absolutely must be certain that anyone we grant an officer's role to on this ship meets the highest standard of capability... for all of our lives and the lives of our crew will surely depend upon it at some stage."
"His whole life, I'd reckon. I actually don't know his sailing record that well. But valid points, valid points. Though I am an Artificer. Not a carpenter. 'The Captain clearly takes his time to think on the matter, pouring himself tall glass of water, before looking to the First Mate, who mutters something quietly to him. Aundrey clearly ponders whatever it is that the First Mate has said, before speaking,'
"While it is true that a ship with a skilled carpenter is undeniably better prepared than one which lacks the same, such appointments are always about finding the right person for the job. What makes the right stuff for any appointment is, of course, somewhat subjective. However, what is clear and obvious is that a poorly chosen ship's crew member, particularly an officer, can spell trouble for the entire vessel and all aboard.
It is also a fact that sailors tend to bea superstitious and tradition bound folk, and no Captain would be wise to ignore this fact or seek to undermine the long-held to beliefs that the men and women of the sea hold. This is especially true, more's the pity, in this case, where a senior officer has already made his contrary view on a matter of this kind very apparent AND that view was supported by a number of common sailors.
As such, while it pains me to say such, I find that I simply cannot..."
[OOC] perception check from everyone at the table to hear what E'strue mutters to Aundrey - DC 12:
"I'm tellin' ya, Captain, he won't like it, not one little bit. He already feels like we, like ye ignore his advice too often. Be wary, that's all i'm tellin' ye..."
A'ro just nodded"So we don't know if he has experience fixing a ship on open waters - that could lead us to drowning."

'Perhaps sensing the Captain's approaching decision, the Master of Sail raises a hand, begging the Captain's pardon, to offer an alternate proposition - a compromise that might allow for a gradual testing of these delicate and dangerous waters. Seemingly pleased to be offered something of a middle course, Aundrey nods his head enthusiastically, stating,'
"Hmm, well yes, that does sound like an entirely reasonable and safe course of action, Mr Gale."
"I see no problem with that, that's actually a great idea! I also don' wan' him getting this position because of me, but he is skilled. Now he can show ye all." 'The young Captain's bright smile and clear gaze takes you all in, before coming to rest on Virtoris,'
"Yes, Ships Mage. But not right now, as we've other matters yet to discuss.
However, you have put forward your case well for this old acquaintance of your father's and while we... while I have my concerns about the matter, I think that our Master of Sail's proposed plan a very reasonable one. You may let this Yentil know that he should come meet with myself and the senior officers on the adjacent dock this evening, to discuss the specifics of this trial."

'Slightly dismayed at not hearing the Captain mention anything about jelly donuts, Kestrell stealthily tries to cast Prestidigitation without anyone noticing and conjure the scent of freshly baked pastries.'
'First Mate E'strue smiles at Captain Aundrey and with a nod to the rest of you, continues as she was prior to the interjection,'
"We'll have to see how the Carpenter situation unfolds, but that still leaves us short a bona fide healer, which ain't much to me likin'. The Captain and Bousn an' meself will do our best to rectify this in time, but we press on regardless.
'Standing and moving across the large chest, which she deftly unlocks after withdrawing an iron ring of keys that sits on a long chain about her neck, E'strue withdraws a number of items which she brings back to place on the Captain's table. Looking across the items you see a fine oak box beautifully inlaid with a multi-coloured pattern, a large vial with a swirling almost fluorescent yellow liquid inside and a large rolled up sheet of parchment. With a smile, Captain Aundrey picks up the box and places it in front of the Shark's Navigator, saying in a clearly pleased voice,'
"My own father recognised early on that I lacked the... instincts for hard trade negotiation, so he thought that I may be of use to the family in other ways. One of those he'd hoped I'd take to was navigation. This lovely set he bought me for my twenty-first name day... and it sat on a shelf in my quarters at home almost everyday since. A crime it is, to waste such a lovely and potentially useful creation. And so I brought it North with me, to give to the right man or woman, when I found them. And I believe that I have..."
'Looking at the box more closely, Kestrell notices that the inlay forms the pattern of a horizon made of inter-lapping waves, above which rises a blazing half sun, with the whole pattern formed of literally dozens of fine slivers of different coloured woods, all masterfully arranged using marquetry. Unlatching the shiny brass clasp and opening the box, the bard sees a number of finely crafted instruments within, all made of lacquered oak and polished brass. A divider, compass, parallel ruler, pencils and other items are all snugly fitted within the box, though it is a wonderfully designed sextant that is clearly the boxes centrepiece.
Leaving the navigator to look over his new prize, the Captain takes the rolled up parchment and unfolds it across the table's centre. As he does so, E'strue leans forward to secure the corners of what you now see is a large detailed map with small brass weights. Standing back up and waving a hand over the now-displayed map, Captain Aundrey continues,'
"A fine ship, a fine crew and fine tools we now have. This is all well and good, and as it should be, but it is our actions that will earn us acclaim and drive the predators of the Shore from these waters in fear. And for that, we need a destination and a plan."
'Indicating a small area on the map, which, to the unitiated, appears to be part of a shore-line and a handful of nearby dots, the Captain states with his usual impassioned vigour,'
"That little circle on the coast right there is Rumbottom, our current moorage and safe harbour. This much larger circle way down here is the city of Luskan. Those five specks there are a small chain of islands a few days to the South-West known as The Knuckles. Those islands my good friends, will be our first proper destination as a crew aboard this fine vessel.
To secure us leave to use Rumbottom as a base of operations for our hunting activities, I had to first ask permission of local nobility, this being the Dubol Ambersap, who would be considered a Baroness further to the South. She's a descendent of the man who first settled this cove over a century ago and is quite proud of the fact. While the Dubol did grant my request to allow the Shark to moor and dock in her town as needed, she insisted in turn that we make it a priority to ensure safe passage for merchant vessels in the nearby seas.
According to the Dubol's senior man, a merchant ship by the name of Wildyeast is six days late for delivery and pick-up here in Rumbottom. The Master of the Yeast, one Captain Tulfer, is known as a reliable sort, and the Dubol and her proxies fear foul play. She has asked that we make finding out what happened to this vessel a priority. And so we shall!
Two days ago, a passing schooner's First Mate made mention of sighting a ship matching the Yeast's description to one of the Dubol's men in the Pirate over an ale. In three days time, maybe less all things being in accordance, I plan to sail us down to the Knuckles near which the Yeast was last spotted. We will either find the Yeast and guide her back into Rumbottom, or we will find out what happened to her and take appropriate action. If foul play is involved, we will enact justice upon the perpetrators to the utmost of our ability to do so.
'First Mate E'strue stands up beside the Captain then and says,'
"So there you have it, my fine fellow officers. Our first destination, mission and planned voyage together as a crew.
Stow yer belongins in yer quarters, enjoy the next few days on land and make arrangements as ye will, though we'll expect ye all to be operationally familiar with the Shark prior to our departure. I'd like all officers to eat here this evening, since the Bosun and Weapons Master should update us on the results of today's trainin'. Apart from that, we need to become better acquainted with each other if'n we're all to function effectively out there when it matters most."
'Nodding to E'strue, Captain Aundrey picks up the glowing yellow vial and smiles, saying,'
"I'll leave a toast to our maiden voyage until tonight when we're all present, but are there any questions before we head back out onto the deck."

'Quarter Master Daegrin's stomach apparently chooses that very moment to rumble, which causes most around the table to chuckle, though the halfling looks not the slightest bit embarrassed. Daegrin merely laughs along, saying,'

'Sniffing the air, the First Mate's eyes find Kestrell's and she says with a knowing smile and wink,'
"Understanable, Mr. Daegrin, what with that lovely smell in the air all of a sudden. Fear not, while our cook is off learnin' to shoot with the rest of the crew, I believe the Captain's coin is still good over at the Pirate and I'm sure lunch will await ye there after'n we're all done."

'As you hear Fillian give his, now clearly displeased, twin a ribbing about her comparitively loose final shot, your Weapon's Master steps up beside the Bosun, motioning the next group forward. Before those of you in the front line have the chance to step back, Unne points at Kay, Nern, Una and Vaken, barking out,'
"NOT so fast! You four - get up there and straighten those targets. And see if you can't do anything to make them more secure... NOW!"
'Nern, his rash covered face and neck standing out almost as bright as his flaming red hair, merely nods, slinging his crossbow over his shoulder as he trudges up the slope towards the top of the rise. Upon reaching the targets, Nern goes to work trying to straighten and stabilise one of the targets, without much initial success.'
'As the other three crew members go about trying to fix or reinforce the targets, the young red-head Nern, who is having no luck whatsoever fixing his target, looks around at the three of you and then over at Vaken, clearly taking note of the goliath's enormous size, and says,'
"Ehh, so yer the one who cost me the sweet job as ship's cook, huh? Ye don't look like much of a cook. Look more like ye'd be better at splittin' a man's head open with a cleaver rather than usin' it to cut shanks."
'The young man is clearly awaiting a response when...*THUNK*... Nern screams in pain, crumpling to the ground while clutching at his left leg. Looking down, you all see the familiar tip of a crossbow bolt protruding from one side of the man's calf, while the butt end of the bolt is still visible near where it entered the limb. As Nern grabs at his leg screaming in shock, you hear the unmistable angry shouts of Drannick and the furious roar of Unne from below,
"Why in the ***** Queen's name did ye do THAT ye' durned fool! Oh, ye think that's funny do ye? Well ye won't be laughin' none when the Captain finds out... or when I dock ye wages to cover any healin' the stuck pig up there needs! Blast it all!"
"Unne did NOT tell you to cock, load and aim, and Unne did NOT tell you to fire... Perhaps Unne should should spill your blood in the same way that you spilled that boys... Yes... maybe that is what Unne should do."
'Looking down the rise, you see both officers standing angrily in front of the Islander Enzio, berating the dreadlocked sailor. Most of the other sailors carefully and/or quickly lay their crossbows on the ground and take a step back from the unfolding situation.'

'As Virtoris reaches out to place his hand on the Captain he suddenly finds the First Mate at his side, her own hand on the Ship's Mage's shoulder, as Estrue says in a calm but deadly serious voice,'
"The Captain isn't injured, Mage. And ye'd best ask before the next time ye be thinkin' to lay hands on yer Captain... or don't ye need two hands to cast ye spells with?"
'Captain Aundrey, seemingly taken by surpise, merely says,'
"No, no, it's quite alright, E'strue. I mean, after all, why would the goodman Virt here come aboard, plead his case for an old family friend, only to do something like attack his Captain? That wouldn't make any sense at all!"
'At the Captain's words, the First Mate steps back, merely giving Virtoris a nod and cool glance as he casts the healing spell on Aundry. As Virt's spell takes effect, the Captain exclaims,'
"Ahh, that healing warmth, I'd recognise it anywhere. I once spent six-months laid up as a child while clerics of Chauntea blessed me with their healing magics and otherwise fussed over me. You may not be a cleric, Virt, but you've certainly got the healers touch. And that's a fine thing to know, especially with us having no surgeon aboard. Excellent!"

'Looking down at Kestrell as the navigator lovingly removes items from the box, examining each piece wonderously, Aundrey replies happily,'

Looking back up at Nern, "I'll need to remove the arrow first. It's going to hurt." With that Vaken grabs both ends of the bolt and slides it so that the head is barely protruding. Then, taking a deep breath, Vaken snaps the butt end off the bolt and pulls the rest of the bolt out by the head. Una rushes over to Nern, neiling next to nern and looking at the wound.
"Shit, looks like shes gone straight through you buddy. Lucky she didnt hit any bone"
Una gives Nern a forced smile then turns looking at Vaken and Kay
"Do either of you have any bandages? We need to get this out then get pressure right on it."
'Kay just stands there pale faced, eyes locked on the nasty wound as a blood runs down the young screaming man's leg. She seems completely unresponsive to Una's words. Nern himself seems almost hysterical with pain, crying out to the tatooed woman as she kneels at his side,'
"Please, please, OH MY GOD... the PAIN! Please get it out! Ahh, argh, Ohhh shittt! It HURTS!"
Vaken steps over to where Nern lies on the ground and looks at the wound, then looks to Una, "I can take care of it."

'Nern nods his head frantically at Vaken's words, sweat begining to pour down the young mans face, but when the goliath begins his ministrations, Nern begins thrashing about in agony, the volume of his screaming rising higher and higher. Perhaps mercifully, as Vaken snaps and removes the bolt, the pain proves too much for the young sailor, and he passes out.
As Vaken finishes tidying up the wound and applying a healing touch to the wounded man, the blustering wind, which is especially gusty at the top of the rise, fades momentarily and another sound carries to the ears of the three conscious sailors - a strange and unexpected noise seemingly coming from the nearby trees.'

A’ro listened as his fellow officers began to discuss the options and was glad when they agreed to go with his options. He wasn’t against having a gnome on board, just against having someone who was inexperienced. “Thank ya Captain, and thank ya Gentlemen for hearing out the idea and entertaining it.” A’ro gives a quick glance to the two having heard the conversation ‘Well that might be a problem later on’ was all he could think to himself.
He listened to the debrief of the mission their vessel was about to take on, taking note to remember the details. As they finished and the E’strue told them to store their belongings he looked around – realizing he didn’t have any belongings to stow. He just chuckled as the halflings stomach growled.
A’ro was about to speak up about the cook when the man, shot down that they weren’t just looking for a person who could cast healing spells. He tried to think if he could remember any surgeons from back in his days that may be available for help, unfortunately they all just seem to be escaping them. He had been pretty luck in his time not needing to see the surgeon for to much.
“Sounds good on all fronts, next time to meet up is dinner tonight – is there anything else for us to cover now or can we begin to wonder around this beautiful ship and finish up loose business in town, if we got any?” A’ro was just curious, besides wanting to see the ship in all its grandeur he also wanted to conduct some business in the town before leaving.
”Understood, First Mate. My apologies. But, if that will be all, I have to go speak with Yentil. A’ro, would you mind walking out with me?” Virt stands up and asks the Genasi. Pushing his chair in he leans on it, now also getting hungry. Forgetting that he only had tea for breakfast, he decided that he was going to take Yentil to lunch once he caught up with him.

'At first, Una thinks that the groaning sound is just the wind, but then looking towards the tree line where the sound is coming from, she notices that none of the tree branches are swaying. Then she realises that she can no longer hear the bird song or insect noises that moments ago were very noticable out here away from the town. The hairs rising on the back of the woman's neck, Una notices shapes moving amongst the trees, growing more distinct as they move forward into the open towards the sailors...
Vaken is still kneeling at the stable but barely conscious Nern's side, checking the young man's pulse and breathing, and so isn't paying attention to the tree line.
Still staring entranced by all the blood around the now stable Nern, Kay also does not appear to hear the noise at all.'

Virt smiled at the bard's song, feeling it energize him in a way that he has never felt before.
"I do enjoy a good dessert, friend."

"His whole life, I'd reckon. I actually don't know his sailing record that well. But valid points, valid points. Though I am an Artificer. Not a carpenter. We both build things with our hands, tis is true, A'ro. But that's where our similarities end. As this is my first berth on such a large ship, I'd appreciate that ye wouldn't try to make more work fer me. I am skilled, tis true, not that skilled, me friend." Virt laughs nervously at the thought of being named the carpenter as well as looks over at the bard and back to A'ro, "He's a friend of me da's."

A'ro just nodded "So we don't know if he has experience fixing a ship on open waters - that could lead us to drowning."

"I see no problem with that, that's actually a great idea! I also don' wan' him getting this position because of me, but he is skilled. Now he can show ye all." And what Virtoris wasn't saying was that he could show him as well, because though he spoke for the man he really didn't know of his skills. Looking back at the Captain with a pleading smile, "I can go meet up with him right now and bring him in for a demonstration."

It is also a fact that sailors tend to be a superstitious and tradition bound folk, and no Captain would be wise to ignore this fact or seek to undermine the long-held to beliefs that the men and women of the sea hold. This is especially true, more's the pity, in this case, where a senior officer has already made his contrary view on a matter of this kind very apparent AND that view was supported by a number of common sailors.
As such, while it pains me to say such, I find that I simply cannot..."

"I'm tellin' ya, Captain, he won't like it, not one little bit. He already feels like we, like ye ignore his advice too often. Be wary, that's all i'm tellin' ye..."
'The young Captain's bright smile and clear gaze takes you all in, before coming to rest on Virtoris,'
"Yes, Ships Mage. But not right now, as we've other matters yet to discuss.
However, you have put forward your case well for this old acquaintance of your father's and while we... while I have my concerns about the matter, I think that our Master of Sail's proposed plan a very reasonable one.

[OOG] Back on the hill North of town, where Kay, Vaken and Una have been training with the other crew...

Una rushes over to Nern, neiling next to nern and looking at the wound.
"Shit, looks like shes gone straight through you buddy. Lucky she didn't hit any bone"
Una gives Nern a forced smile then turns looking at Vaken and Kay
"Do either of you have any bandages? We need to get this out then get pressure right on it."
"Aye, my father never did do anything in half-measures. If his son was going to have a new toy, then he'd make certain that it was the finest of its kind. I have a feeling that it was made with someone like you in mind, Kestrell, rather than someone like myself, and I have no doubts that you'll look after it and, more importantly, use it to good effect!"

Vaken steps over to where Nern lies on the ground and looks at the wound, then looks to Una, "I can take care of it."
Once that's done Vaken lays his hand on the wound and starts moving the other hand in a seemingly erratic gesture while muttering under his breath. When the goliath removes his hand all can see that the wound has been healed, though the blood remains.
As Vaken stands back up, he looks Nern in the eyes, "Aye, I don't look like a cook. Don't look like a healer either. Mayhaps you shouldn't judge based on looks."
Vaken then walks over to help Kay with the target.

It HURTS!"
