Steinarr, you flick the reins and... nothing happens. Again, and no response. A third time, and one of the oxen farts loudly. This seems to wake the other one up, and slowly... very slowly... the cart begins to move forwards. These are very well trained and passive creatures, and it would be hard to get this wrong, but you get the sense that they don't have much respect for you yet.
The cart moves through the streets, with a brief stop for Soron to get some urgent supplies. Soon you pass through the city gates; the guards nod at you, and you suspect Gundren and Sildar told them to expect you. In any case, they're searching carts entering the city, not leaving, so you get waved through. As you leave the city, dawn breaks on a cool spring day. Your adventure has begun.
(Feel free to role play your conversation in character as we go.)
Demetrio suddenly speaks towards Kyla in Elvish and look of distrust towards the two elves?
”what do you mean by that? Besides you Soron?”
Next thing you notice Demetrio is now behind the cart and trailing everyone else. He seems to be keeping an eye on the two elves as if he doesn’t trust them now.
When did u get here? i thought u were in front of the cart... anyways... I sense a bit of hostility from you Demetrio, have i done or said anything that offended you or do you just have a general distrust for elves?
Slightly amused that Demetrio knows Elvish, Kyla moves very close to him and responds in a whisper (still in elvish) , What I mean is that Soron must call me by my full name, and everyone else was allowed to choose between Kyla and Kylara, but now you must also call me Kylara only because you also know our language, perhaps you know of our unspoken customs from the northern mountains of Abornea. Kylara then winks and grins wildly at Demetrio before he moves to walk behind us, not noticing the distrust.
The cart journeys south, and Steinarr grows more comfortable and confident driving the oxen. The area around Neverwinter is farmland, but this soon gives way to gentle green hills, dotted with villages and clumps of woodland. Soron, make a Perception check.
”I’m escorting this cart to Phandalin and I would assume that’s why you are here too”
Then he grumbles but what you can barely make out is something about “last time” and “ all gone now”
he then says audibly towards Soron
”Come one let us go with haste, we have a job to finish and three long days travel to get it done.So stop shopping and chatting and let’s get moving.”
He then walks back up to the cart and gets in to sit next to Steinarr to enjoy the long days ride.and casually says to Steinarr “ Are you sure your comfortable driving these oxen?”
It’s harder on my arse than me feet. You’re welcome to take over Demetrio if you need to rest your feet. Steinarr holds the reins out for Demetrio If anyone needs a break I am happy to switch.
Kylara walks right next to Demetrio and asks in elvish, loud enough for Solon to hear, Do you not know about the customs of the northern mountains? If not, you must not have been taught elvish by an elf, or possibly you were but they only did it as a means to an end. Is that why you seem to have an issue with me and Solon as he pointed out earlier? She then stares at him while walking along the cart with her green eyes dancing in amusement.
Soron, you notice that some of the villages are populated, but there are many abandoned - not ruined, just abandoned. It's clear that something happened in this region, not too long ago, something devastating that either cost a lot of lives or drove a lot of people away. It's a little unsettling, but you can also see that the region is growing and becoming prosperous again.
The first day of travelling passes without incident, and you make camp for the night. Most of you had rations already, but you find that Gundren has left a total of 15 days' rations in the cart for you; that's three days each, enough to get you to Phandalin you expect.
(You need four people to keep watch overnight when you're not in a safe area. Please decide who will take first, second, third and fourth watch while the others sleep. Elves meditate rather than sleep, but can still only take one watch period during the night. You can also continue the conversation around the campfire. Each of the four people on watch should give me a Perception check.)
Thank you Steinarr, I will gladly sit beside Demetrio and be amused with his tales of how he learned elvish and what he knows of our customs...and find out what his apparent mistrust of Kylara and Solon seems to be seemed to hang in the air like a knife as she climbs into the seat next to him and glares.
I am happy to take one of the watches, I spent most of the day on my backside. My vision is better at night than most humans would you want me to take one of the later watches? Steinarr asks whilst setting up camp

(Soron) Speaks to Demetrio

Steinarr grumbles to himself in orcish about stubborn oxen and makes himself comfortable to listen to what unfolds behind him

Soron looks around him for interesting sights , does he see anything?

DM - what approximate time did we leave and approximately how long have we traveled so far?

(You left Neverwinter at dawn. You've been on the road for a few hours, and the journey is likely to take three days or so)

Cloudy or clear? As I want to know how bright it is outside.
Warforged Fighter Talien
It's mostly clear, little patches of white clouds but no risk of rain; a fresh, bright and clear spring day.
