aOOC: I'm asking for a DM ruling for my turn - will impact what I do. I know the glaive is a two handed reach weapon. If you say no because of RAW, I understand.
Can I choke down on the handle and try slashing with the blade one handed, like a sword so I can bring my shield into play? I'm willing to take damage dice reduction to d8/d6 and/or disadvantage on the attack.

Yes, you can do that. I think disadvantage is the appropriate penalty as the weapon isn't intended to be used that way and it might be awkward to handle as such.

Ok. Alten slings his shield off his back and brings it in front of him (AC 21) and chokes up about half way on the handle of the glaive.
