Once the drawbridge comes down, Zook helps escort the villagers back into Nightstone. Upon passing the guards who weren’t so keen on letting them in, he remains silent, but smiles in a quirky gnomish grin. He then helps the tired people back to their homes and offers aid wherever it’s needed.
Mandaway accompanied the villagers into the town and went back to what he was doing before he was rudely interrupted by slavers, preparing the dead for burial and digging graves.
The villagers are a bit moody at these Zhents, and a bit dismayed at the level of damage. A few of them start grieving over dead relatives. Bert, you overhear as the villagers walk past someone mumbling "It is all going to be fine, Lady Nander will not let these people stay, if these people who rescued us aren't good enough, she will hire someone else"
Bert is mainly paying attention to what the Zhents are saying, and what the villagers are saying TO the Zhents if anything. Were there any people in the group we rescued who seemed to take on any leadership roles of had any ability to speak for the group, who might say anything to the Zhents? (Also I thought we said Lady Nander died when we told them what happened to the town?)
Basically Bert was trying to see if the villagers started to have any conflict with the Zhents, and if the Zhents tried to force themselves as in control of their town, in which case he would fire an arrow right at the Zhents' leader hoping to break the rest of the group's resolve, depriving them of any appetite of town-controlling. Make it clear that this town's not worth the fight. But if the Zhents are just.... there, and if the villagers are just grumbling then he's not the type to just start a fight independently.
Halizthan will walk with the people as they enter the town, staying quiet as he looks to the Zhents. "Do you know how many of them have taken up in this town?" He will ask those of the group that were with him.
(they weren't all listening to it. Or they are hopeful/thinking you are wrong. The dwarf who is most in charge knows but he is silent. He starts heading towards his inn (which he doesn't know but Bert and Hawk would, is where the Zhents have set up base)
Zook may also know that the Zhents have set up base inside the inn. Even if he doesn’t know this, he will still accompany the dwarf to the inn, if for no other reason than to offer support, and help at least do some cleanup, knowing that the inn is in such bad shape.
Halizthan will follow Zook to the inn, moving to take a seat at any open tables. As he sits he will make no attempts to remove his weapons, keeping them close at hand.
In the inn, the main floor as 2 Zhents playing cards at a table, having helped themselves to a barrel of ale sitting next to their table. The dwarf sighs and goes upstairs, entering what was room 1 earlier and looking distraught at the damage, and noticing that his chest has been opened and partially (I think. You did it so correct me if I am wrong) looted. Assuming you guys went up here he turns to you and whispers "Please, for the sake of the town, remove these people, kill them if needed. I will lend aid if you require. And then I can go assess damages"
Mandaway approached a couple of the Zhents out in the town and asked them to assist with gravedigging...." Unless of course you folks enjoy the smell of rotting flesh...."
Most of them have jobs they have been told to do, one person helps dig graves. The bodies had just been piled up in a graveyard already so it is a case of bury not find
It's the evening right? Bert will get close to one of the inn's windows and listen from the outside. He's still ready for hostilities to start and is wondering what the heck is going on...
Bert will join his friends inside the inn, seeing that no one seems very tense, which he finds confusing. When the dwarf sees the open lockbox, Bert sheepishly gives him back the money and any of the mail/helm/potion that they took after Bert picked the lock. "I could lie and say I was just keeping it safe from the Zhentarim, but we honestly didn't know they were coming when we got to this inn, and we honestly didn't think its owner was still among the living. But you've been through a lot, and I'd rather have a functioning inn with a working bar in a place like this, so here you are. Have you asked the Zhents what their intentions are, and if they're going to move along? Speaking for ourselves, we're just looking to get you back to almost-normal and then be on our way. Maybe figure out what the deal is with the giants stealing your stone? Did you see the flying castle thing? Anything more you can tell us about that?"
Zook moves over to Bert and responds, speaking softly in the elvish tongue.
"Bert, I do now know if you heard him, but our dwarf innkeeper friend is greatly displeased about these unsavory men taking over here. He whispered to Hawk and me earlier and pleaded that we remove them, and kill them if needed. He said that he would lend us aid if needed. They are clearly not welcome here."
"I know that you would like to investigate the issue with the giants, and so would I, partly because I've never actually seen a giant, but we are here right now, and these people are in desperate need. We have rescued them and brought them back, but in light of the situation, it would seem that we have brought them out of the fire, but have now placed them into a fry pan about to go back on the coals."
"I fear that if we leave them right now, their lives will not get better, they'll get worse, and I for one, cannot let that happen, if there's something I can do to prevent it. When I left the monastery, I swore a vow to protect the innocent and help people, and I cannot in good heart leave this group of villagers alone to live under the fist of these mercenaries. We need to help them."
Bert draws nearer to the main gate and hides in shadows between the wall and the westernmost house, listening into what's being said.

I’m not sure you’re going to like what you find at the inn, my friend..

Pleasantly surprised, Mandaway went to work....
Won't take long. Maybe an hour max

Once finished Mandaway headed to the inn for a well earned drink.

No hostility is detected. It is evening though
