The sight is utterly sickening. Sarah has to swallow back her gorge several times as she checks over the bodies trying to remember any sign this might have had an arcane motive. Or anything else as to what happened.
"We should check for magic," Sarah suggests. "It's interesting the McKenzies aren't here. Why were PPA slaughtered but not them? That worries me."
George sighs and mumbles under his breathe 'Seriously, what has this world come to...'
'The fact the prisoners aren't here could be good news - this could have been a rescue but the MacKenzies. It's the liver and eyes that worry me - it's clearly deliberate, maybe even ritualistic.'
'He then quickly moves into Ranger mode and begins examining the ground for tracks to find out who hit the train and where they might have headed next.
Investigation: 17 (advantage if in forest 18)
Survival to pick up the trail (Advantage favored enemy) 16
This is not McKenzie work as they use longbows and gladius when they fight. This was crossbows, longswords and axes.
"This seems pretty basic. The slaves were rescued/taken somewhere - the PPA slaughtered because they were objecting to it. The eyes and liver taken and roasted to gain the strength of your foes, everything else stripped for pack rat frugality. Maybe we're dealing with an obscure group of isolationists that we've not me, yet. " Thomas works wit the others to gather intel on the attack and track the path taken.
“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar
You move out after looking over the scene of the massacre, nothing else comes to light. After a while a perception roll from your eyes in the sky please.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Hearing Thomas's call, George responds 'If they're under attack that means we're close and someone wants us blind. I can't imagine this is a 'natural' hawk that just happened to attack an Owl and a couple of Ravens. Blades out and eyes up people'
George squints and sniffs and studies the sky, looking to see if the hawk is natural or some sort of summoned creature (Primevil Awareness)
With that, he accelerates away from the main group and looks to stake out a hiding spot with a view of the road - watching for signs of an ambush or anyone approaching:
Perception: 3 and with advantage if in a forest 12
Stealth: 22
OOC: As usual, George disappears like a shadow, but can't see anything past his shoelaces......
Gamliel will try to communicate with the offensive hawk, seeing if it is also a familiar. If that fails, he'll try and coax it within bowshot during the combat.

At George's prompt, Em steps forward also breaking from the group a bit looking mainly at the surrounding land and trees. He motions Ernie to take cover.
Perception: 15
OoC: just in case we do get into an ambush just wanted to remind DM that em has the Alert feat for the sake of surprise and att rolls
The hawk flies past Terfysgeath and barely misses it curls back for another attack
Gamliel makes a flyby attack and tries to draw it back toward your group. His attempt at communications falls on deaf ears. It's just a hawk
The hawk follows Gamliel and attacks again 8 killing the familiar. Are the ravens attacking or running away?
Thomas hears the cry of pain and then silence -- except not silence. Something is moving through the brush toward your group. It is not trying to hide its presence otherwise you'd never know with all those horrible perception checks.
DM points and laughs at these dice rolls
OOC: *whimpers in a corner, hoping not to attract the wrath of the dice gods further*

As Em has proven useless in this instance he gets ready to leave with the group. He also pulls a mouthpiece from his pocket and puts it in his mouth.
OoC: I hope i roll better if we end up in combat....

We need to know if those crows see the hawk diving at them out of the sun because Gamliel certainly doesn’t.
OOC: Can she try shooting the hawk or is her perception to low and range to great?
Range too great, the birdies are ahead blocked by the forest.
George is oblivious to the drama above - working hard to keep on the trail of their new quarry.
Ofn and Terfysgeath Perception 17
Aleister will count tracks to estimate how many folks were involved in dissecting the PPA goons.
Investigation 20
"Well, it looks as though there was a passel or five of the buggers," Aleister complains. "Must be the sun in my eyes."

Edit Sorry, they are ravens not crows. Anyway, Terfysgeath is shocked as the hawk flies past missing by "that' much with its talons.
