Seeing the party set for possible hostilities, Thomas slowly cocks the crossbow and loads a quarrel, aiming at the crossbowman or the nearest foe, if foe they prove to be. Holding his shot, he waits for any unfortunate violent actions on the part of the guards.

Perception check 19 Aleister will try and discern what sorts of smells are 'in the air'; most particularly anything that suggests human remains, such as what eaters might produce.
"I do not like the feel of this," Aleister says to Berry and his escort. "Ready yourselves for action. Remember, the Professor is to be protected. Do either of you have any ranged weapons?"
Mr Berry is a non combatant and will stay with the Prof.
Aleister sniffs the air and smells only the scents of a working farm. You also hear the start of a dog's warning growl that quickly stops.

'I'm gonna try to disappear, U and Herman you take point. Max and Aleister stick close to the professor - bug out if things go south and pick up Thomas on the way.'

He then slips off his horse, hitching it to the back of the wagon and pull his Ghillie Cloak over his head and drifts away from the party's main line of advance - looking for a shallow or a shrub to hide. Once he can see the 'guards' he begins studying them to prepare Hunters Mark.

Was pre-emptively rolling to keep things moving in case I'm not around when the $h't goes down - and added Hunters Mark in case it applies at the time - but it was nice to finally get a couple of decent rolls!

A figure rises from the ground dressed in makeshift armour with a short spear made from a steak knife set in the end of a short pole "Be peaceful and be-gone. We don't need no people comin' on our farm." It could have been slightly impressive but his voice broke halfway through the speech. On closer examination the figure is... fourteen?

He looks at the kid and his eyes soften, "Children shouldn't be wielding spears." He wants to do a perception check to see if he can tell the age range of the surrounding people, 15

At last, a perception roll that perceives something. They range from about eight to a girl around 15-16 (she has the xbow). They are skittish about your group but there is an edge to a couple of the older kids like they have done violence and do understand what's necessary.
And it's happened again. The new player who created a character that you met in Junction City has vanished. That's about five now, are people always this squirrelly?
Uthvern just turns and looks at the others, "I'm not quite sure what we should do? Offer safety in our town? The other town? They shouldn't be left alone, I think."
The girl shuffles forward "Genera" she introduces herself, as she places a hand on the boy's spear, lowering it slowly. "why have you come here?" She asks still not completely certain whether to trust the strangers.

'We're out checking on the neighbors - and you all qualify as neighbors. How did you all wind up out here on your own? When was the last time you ate?'
George waves the wagon forward with the Professor, Alestair and the others and makes the 'All Clear' Handsign he and Thomas worked out in advance.
'We've got a medic with us - does anyone need medical care?'
Uthvern just looks at the others and chuckles a tiny bit. "More or less because we saw a flickering light, I guess you'd say. To be frank, we're on our way to another town for information and to set a trade route along the way. Deal with information. Have any of you heard of , I think they're called The Eaters?"
Aleister will come up with Frank and Noa(? still with us) and seeing the kids says, "Perhaps you folks should move to Junction City, there's those there that would appreciate you company, and you would be in a better position to defend against any hostile critters, there be those sort roaming around here for sure. While I admire your determination and willingness to defend this place it is not an ideal situation. To be blunt, determined eaters would probably find you a tasty target."

"O-our parents just disappeared, I was baby sitting here. All the grownups went out together and just didnt come back. Alot of weird things are happening in town we saw people get attacked." Her eyes teared up " we dont know whats going on or where everyone went. After the attack we gathered all the weapons we can find and tried to make as little noise as possible"
"Ww what are Eaters?" she whispers as she turns to Uthvern.
Then looks at the others "We want to leave but were too scared, take us with you please! We'll leave a note incase our parents come back. Or maybe we can find them in Junction city. We dont want to stay alone anymore. "
