As they walk Kalmar muses on the Neverembers. So, Dagult was the open lord of Waterdeep and then he tried to become lord protected of Nevereinter? And because of that he was voted out as the open lord? Could he still be one of the secret lords? Could they be using his son as leverage? He turns his head and spits in frustration. For some reason I think that this is not going to be the simple missing person gig we thought it was.
Ringo takes two extra steps to Kalmar’s one as he listens to his friend’s theories. “Another question to ask is why did they vote him out? What was he doing that people wanted him out?” Ringo pulls out a pouch of tobacco and reaches for his wood carved pipe and packs it while walking. He then pats his body for a match. “Dammit,” he says coming up matchless. He then pulls the pipe out of his mouth. “And to your point, why would he, or even they, would want him to be a secret lord...?”
Kal shortens his stride considers his hafling companion’s question Maybe they voted him out because he was trying to become Protecter of Neverwinter and that’s too much power for one man? Or, if I’m remembering my Waterdhaven politics correctly, maybe they want him to be a secret lord so he can exert his influence without drawing attention while still being the Lord Protecter. Could be someone’s trying to consolidate power in the north on the sly. Where’s a simple “rout some goblins out the nearby cave” job when you need one?
Ringo laughs at Kalmar. “Think of this as a stepping stone. The gods want us to be here and I welcome their nudging us into danger.” Ringo puts his unlit pipe in his mouth, shrugs, and then says through pipe clenched teeth, “plus more stories for me to write and sing.” He smiles at Kalmar, “don’t worry, you’ll star in most of them,” He then gives Kalmar a loving nudge with his elbow.
Kalmar throws his head back and laughs Great! Just so long as we survive long enough to reap the benefits of being heroes. We won’t be able to take any tavern maids for a tumble in the storeroom if some Zhentarim bastard sticks a knife between our ribs!
Flutter shakes his head in agreement -"Feckin' nobles..."-, and the three of you proceed up the Way of the Dragon while talking. It is as you thought, and no one in particular gives you minds as you make your way and duck into Candle Lane. Gloom envelops the alley as dark as a dungeon, and as rank as one too. The buildings are tall and densely packed, and block out the evening sun, and all the streetlamps have been smashed in. The only light that pierces the darkness in a faint flickering from down the lane, like a distant candle.
((Sorry guys, the storm last night took out my wifi))
Ringo, the way behind you seems clear, and you figure in the solitary quiet of the alley you'd hear any significant noise.
As you proceed down the lane in the near complete darkness, you see the source of the light: a streetlamp, smashed in like all the others, but with a continually flickering flame in its normal place. The light from this candle-like lamp illuminates a ramshackle two-story warehouse across the alley, which stands at the back of an outer yard behind a tall fence.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
((No worries, man!))
Kal looks at his companions and takes a deep breath. If ever there was a place to get jumped by a group of thugs... What do you think, boys? Proceed with caution? If we decide to proceed Kal will move quietly down the street checking every ally and doorway as he goes. Perception7 if disadvantage due to low light 23
Eyeing the warehouse Kal says I don’t know, boys... we get caught snooping around here and we may just get our throats cut. And I can’t do much sneaking in this armor. What’s the plan? Try to get in there? Or maybe post up somewhere and see if anyone comes out?
Ringo puts away his pipe. He tries to notice if there are any sources of light illuminating from any of the building’s windows and also up and down the street for maybe a manhole cover for a sewer entrance while Kalmar thinks aloud. “I’d like to try to sneak in instead of blasting through. Posting up to keep an eye on the comings and goings could be helpful too. But if we bust in we should make sure we go in hard and fast.” Ringo looks over to Flutter, “what your thoughts be?”
None of the party can see particularly well in the darkness, but through the fence the facade of the building is visible. The are some windows, one on the front of the building at the first story level that is flickering with dim light within.
Fluttercloak brightens up as he has an idea, casting thaumaturgy on the lamppost, causing it's flame to flicker about inconspicuously, as if from a gust of wind, while brightening slightly to cast intermittent light on the front of the warehouse for a long moment. In that moment before the flame returns to normal, you all catch a piece-meal glimpse of the warehouse. The yard seems to occupy the southeast corner of the property, while a wide double door lies directly in-line of the fence gate, a window next to it. You catch a glimpse of the winged snake logo above its handle. The northeast corner of the building also seems to have a door leading into it from the yard, this one crude, with a padlock.
Fluttercloak looks to his fellows, back and forth indecisively between them, before applying a blessing of the trickster to Kalmar, repeating "all together now," in a croaky whisper.
((To clarify OOC, there seems to be three points of ingress: the main door, the window, and the side door. They should all be visible on the boundaries of the fog of war in the picture))
Ringo eyes squint as the warehouse is briefly illuminated. “Thanks to Flutter it seems we have three options. Maybe we can try sneaking up to that window and get a peek inside? Maybe also see if there is a way to get up on the roof?”
Fluttercloak emits a series of quiet mimicked sounds, a door opening followed by a gavel-like clack, then a window opening followed by a clink of coin.

I could try to pick the lock in the side door. Why don’t you two take a peek in the window while I get started on the lock? If there’s no objections Kalmar will sneak over to the padlock stealth10 and then get to work on the lock thieves’ tools11
Kalmar, you creep up fairly stealthily, and although there are no reactions to your approach the lockpick jiggles ineffectively in the padlock. You look over your shoulder to see Fluttercloak sneak up and peek in the window. He looks over to you, holds up four fingers, and points to himself.
