Tomoe shoots the Gray ooze as it jumps from the wall and lands on top of her. All the metal bits of her armor get melted and she left wearing thick leather rags for armor. The other ooze slide over, unaffected by the difficult ground and try to digest Tomoe as she struggles with the Ooze2. Kate charges in and slices the Ooze2 away from Tomoe. Then she brings the weight of her sword to cleave another ooze but she over swings and misses. Lucia with her superior intellect, uses the lack of friction of the floor to deliver a high speed flying kick to Ooze3. The kick almost impales the creature but it's just not enough force. Priya moves in and puts herself between the two remaining Oozes. She claps her hand and... nothing. All it did was release a sound that made the Oozes angry.
Tomoe's bolt almost dissolves inside the ooze but it gets the job done and puts Ooze3 down for good. Ooze4, pissed off at Priya tries to digest her but the bard side steps the attack. Kate, very sick of her wild swings missing, swings again. This time, the blade cleaves the ooze into two.
Battle Victory: You get 125 XP. The 4 Oozes and the Psychic ooze were worth: 820 GP
The room everyone fell into a dining room/kitchen. The table has almost entirely melted. The metal utensils are rusted to infinity. The stove doesn't work due to being gunk ed up. There's window to the north where the stove is. There's a door to the south and one to the west. The room is quiet except for slimy sounds coming from the floor below.
Lucia looks at Tomoe and says, "I think that's you. None of us were hit but that big slime fell on top of you. You can't use a shield with your crossbow so you should probably be more careful."
Kate responds, "Not unless you want to invest a lot of time to train really really hard (Crossbow Expert Feat) to become a master of the crossbow. I say invest in a bigger, meaner crossbow. At least then, you'll be doing more damage as a trade off for having less protection. I mean you'd still need a free hand to reload your crossbow."
DM: I read the "Ammunition" Property carefully and now I'm questioning how crossbows work with Crossbow Expert. I'm going to rule that you need that feat to be able to fire off a light crossbow while holding a shield.

(The ammunition property isn't the issue, Its the reload and two handed that is the issue. I cant reload because i don't have a free hand. and i cant use my shield because i need both hands on the crossbow. Crossbow master fixes the reload issue and the disadvantage with ranged in melee. Nothing fixes needing both hands on the weapon to fire it. All ammunition does is, if i don't have any i cant fire it. And "reloading" means i only get 1 free draw of ammunition per action unlike bows. so with out the feat, i'm stuck with 1 crossbow attack per turn. That's why bows are usually used far more than crossbows. If any of that makes sense)
A heavy crossbow could work. With you two keeping everyone off of me as it is i might be better off falling back on my archery.
(I'm considering with Hand Crossbows. Those are one handed but you still need a free hand to reload that. I looked at my post and noticed I worded things poorly. I said Light Crossbow as in a Crossbow that is Light. The PHB says
Ammunition. You can use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a ranged attack only if you have ammunition to fire from the weapon. Each time you attack with the weapon, you expend one piece of ammunition. Drawing the ammunition from a quiver, case, or other container is part of the attack (you need a free hand to load a one-handed weapon). At the end of the battle, you can recover half your expended ammunition by taking a minute to search the battlefield.
About the ammunition property. So now I'm wondering if it's even possible to dual wield Hand Crossbows even with Crossbow Expert)
(It is not because you always need a free hand to reload. But you can use the bonus action with a single hand crossbow from crossbow expert. So in theory a fighter with crossbow expert can shoot their single crossbow with their main attack actions, then bonus action for 1 more attack. provided they do have a free hand to reload the ammo. The dev's have answered this question years ago but i cant find the citation. )
So I'm going to make the ruling (until someone corrects me) - You need a free hand to reload regardless of whether you are using a one handed or two handed ranged weapon. However, if you take the crossbow expert feat, you can still reload crossbows even if you don't have a free hand.
that's more or less how it works. technically xbow expert doesn't take away the free hand issue, but the once no matter how many attacks you normally have issue. But your DM of this game so you have final word regardless of anything else.
Tomoe reloads and fires at the physic ooze, bolstered by her fighting spirit.
